GuestI say make sure you have a story planned out. You won’t be able to go forward if there’s nothing to go forward to. The biggest gripe about RPGs for me is that the story can get to be too much or too convoluted. I’ve got my big points planned all the way to the end and beyond if anyone who plays it wants a second or third story in the same world.
Also make sure you have unique characters and your world makes sense, I guess? It’s a lot to do by yourself but if you got a story you want to tell, don’t let it get you down about progress. It’s gonna be a slow process no matter what.

GuestNot RPG Maker but I used to make games in an RPG Maker clone called RPG Toolkit all the time back in the early 2000s. That community was comfy, and one of the devs later went on to make Pokemon Showdown. RIP.

Guest>RPG Toolkit
This shit wasted more of my childhood than i’m proud to admit
Never finished or uploaded anything made with it, but i fondly recall being 12 and using it to make a sidescrolling "platformer" with no random battles starring my best friend’s pet rat, starting with a basic outdoor setting involving crawling around in the dirt or escaping the neighbor’s dog and eventually moving to exploring underground temples and alien spaceships because i couldn’t come up with an ending and wanted to keep making shitBut it’s all lost now, just like that chill motherfucker of a rat
goddamn i miss him-

GuestI made a Last Bible 1 remake in rpgmaker xp ages ago, spent about a year and several hundred hours on it. It’s on an old harddrive I think I lost when I moved, fucking sad. I think from time to time of doing something similar with Lost Bible 2 but the inspiration wanes

Guestit was the story of mc’s hero turned villain, who went on a separate journey, trying to rid the world of the same evil but getting twisted into something evil himself. In the original game you end up fighting against him and the secret society of warriors he creates, because the true villains frame them as the bigbad. In my game, you kill your old Mc the pupil, the big ads, and become world emperor, banishing magic. The best part about remaking an old rpg is that you have a ton of blank canvas to work with. Reimagining / fleshing out locations and events was a lot of fun

GuestI’m interested to know how do you learn how to use the tools the software is offering you.
Did you learn by trial and error? Were you part of an online community like a forum or maybe now a discord server? Youtube videos?I wish I could learn how to use this software, even if is just to make some shitty game for myself. I just don’t know were should I go to start learning. Any suggestion?

GuestI’m making a big game right now. The story is funny in a kind of dark sense. I also used to be quite intricately involved with the yume shikki thing that was going on like a year ago.
In fact it recently occured to me how much my game design is inspired by Yume Nikki.
I was also making a top down zelda style game in VXAce, but I’ve put it on hold for my 2k3 game. The program has a giant database that explains the function of every little thing it offers. If there is a specific thing you want to do you can google it and you’ll usually get an answer.
You also kind of just need experience with the engine and at least some understanding of how programming works even if in the end it’s all click and drag stuff. Also you need to be creative with the engine. There are a lot of workarounds that you can think of to get what you want even if there isn’t an explicit function for it.-

GuestLooks cute. How playable is it right now?

GuestThe first two or so areas are playable, but unpolished (missing music and dialogue mostly, some setpieces aren’t as good as they should be). My "design process" is super hectic so area 35 can be more polished than area 3, so to speak.
This looks really good, I’m impressed.
thanks, I’m trying. Not letting feature creep get to me is difficult though.

Guestdownload it and start messing around, that’s really the only way, everything in RPG maker revolves around the event system, once you figure that out you can create pretty much create anything you want within in the limits of the engine, once you’re comfortable with that there’s plugins which allows you to go a bit further.

GuestYou can always focus on puzzles like an adventure game. Like you need to put item X on thing Y to progress. Or just make block pushing puzzles.

Guesti had this obtuse, gimped monstrosity. iirc,
>can’t create models or textures
>one layer for textures and objects that often can’t be placed on top of each other
>one layer for eventsI had one of those PC memory card adapters so I could download other peoples’ games for playstation, i sank so much time into this game and never accomplished anything

GuestI’ve started paying a bit more attention to rpgm games being made lately.
You don’t really notice until you start looking, but there’s a lot that has been made in the last number of years and some of them are pretty good too. They’re all porn games
Bet the original devs weren’t expecting those to be the main product made in it. -

GuestI want to do something with VX Ace. I’m fine with drawing character portraits but doing sprite work is hard, i don’t know where to start with it. I also need to learn the eventing system but that could be done with some experimenting or by YouTube videos.
I’ll probably try opening some games I like in VX Ace and see how those guys did the eventing-

Guest>i don’t know where to start with it.
first you trace over the default assets and then you create your new ones next to them. -

GuestSprites for higher resolution engines like VXAce are a fucking nightmare just because they have quite a high resolution. In my experience sprites for 2k3 and earlier are the best, especially if you’re alone and don’t feel like working on a game for 10 years.
Eventing is easier than you might think, you just need to know the tools you’re working with-
October 15, 2021 at 4:24 pm #419409

GuestJust reduce the size by half when you start working on them and double the size afterwards.
This way you can do 16×16 sprites on VX Ace or 24×24 on MV.

GuestI worked on one for over a year or so before burn out kicked in hard and I ended up unhappy with that I was working on and never got back to it. The area I was working on had a dozen maps then I scrapped them all and redid it from scratch making the map look better but then I was like "fuck, is actually a bit of a pain to explore? how do I make this mechanic work well? is it too dark?"
>put out an alpha
>got positive and feedback and criticism, mostly my grammar
>apparently people liked my mapping
>now feel kinda bad I’m letting the project rot despite having ideas for areas-

-
October 15, 2021 at 4:24 pm #419408

GuestIt’s the latest one so it probably has the most features. Its scripting (so not eventing) is probably more accessible and sophisticated too. And you get higher resolution tilesets and sprites, and I think the map editor is back to being how it was in RM2k, where you can have more layers than the standard ground/above/event

GuestMV and MZ are arguably the best.
Mouse/touch compatible, larger sprites, sideview battle, etc.
MV is still the best because it has more available plugins than MZ.
