Honestly doesn’t look so bad. Couldn’t it work just fine as long as the raw resolution is scaled to 3x? I mean, if you zoom in, the RGB only needs 3 pixels per raw pixel. Even interlacing could probably be okay too.

          any examples?

          What filter is this? Link?

          It’s CRT royale xm29 plus

Why do people fellate CRT-Royale so much? If you want a true CRT retro feel, the shaders that properly simulate component or s-video are more accurate.

I think base CRT royale looks kinda butt.
I like the more crisp look of xm29, plus there’s no screen curvature retardation or overzealous bloom, even if you can change both of those in the settings.

              Learn to use retroarch.
You can also use Reshade, but I think everyone agrees Reshade looks like butt, even the CRT royale preset.

Also the specific CRT royale branch being used in these screenshots is xm29plus or just regular xm29.

keep in mind there are many shaders in a package.
                      1. try many. If one isn’t working try another.
                      2. I think I can only get them to work in openGL rendering. Either that or the other rendering method. Make sure you try both, openGL and I think the other is directx or software rendering or something…

using a shader is as simple as hitting F1, going to the quick menu, going into shaders and then loading a shader from the presets directory

Open the shader file using notepad/np++
                  Find:
                  >SamplerLUT = "../reshade/shaders/LUT/NEC_XM29plus_capture.png"

                  Then change "NEC_XM29plus_capture.png" to "32.png"

Save the new shader file separately and don’t overwrite if you want to keep the original preset alongside the fixed preset.

Thanks man. I want to say it is CRT Royale.

Why do people fellate CRT-Royale so much? If you want a true CRT retro feel, the shaders that properly simulate component or s-video are more accurate.

            >the shaders that properly simulate component or s-video are more accurate

              […]
I think base CRT royale looks kinda butt.
I like the more crisp look of xm29, plus there’s no screen curvature retardation or overzealous bloom, even if you can change both of those in the settings.

What I always wondered is how CRT images look to anons who are actually on a CRT or using a filter.
Do the CRT images ITT look more blurry?

for games that utilize NTSC transparency effects, like the ones on the snes or genesis there’s ntsc-256px-gauss-scanline or ntsc-256px-svideo-gauss-scanline for the ones that used s-video

If you’re going to play SOTN on an emulator that supports it, make sure to fuck with your aspect ratio. The game displays multiple different resolutions depending on whether you’re in menus, in game, cutscenes, etc, and will stretch the fuck out of your game in weird ways. I find setting the aspect ratio to "Unchanged" in retroarch fixes the in-game resolution, even if it stretches the menus.

Because CRT-Royale can look like composite and s-video if you want it to. Also, the preset in OP is supposed to simulate a NEC XM29 PVM, which is a professional monitor used by game devs at the time.

There are also presets for composte or svideo NTSC filters with Royale’s effects.
I also like Lottes though. Lower hardware requirement and a softer, less harsh effect.

When consoles made the switch to HD. Many PS3 games for example were next to unplayable on a CRT, as they were not made with them in mind.

Of course it’s the compression you fucking clown. That’s why nobody posts webms. Webm compressions worst enemy is aperture grill.

But a video still shows the improvement better than a screenshot. Because screenshots are plenty. But you wanna know what it looks like in motion. There you have it. Also of course the visual becomes darker when the shader is applied. This is no problem because you simply increase the contrast or brightness of the screen. Expecting not to lose brightness when applying the shader is stupid. Because that’s not a problem.

I do like the crt look but both are fine. I played chrono trigger on an emulator and it’s still one of my favorite games. crt wouldn’t have changed that.

      Shaderfag redpills:
You can’t emulate CRT on anything less than 4k monitor.

Not all games were designed with shitty distortions and CRT artefacts in mind

At worst you need light scanlines andor NTSC filter. Absolutely nothing in retrogames artstyle requires you to emulate every single fucking photon coming from the tube.

Not a valid argument so i accept your concession. The american box art clearly depicts clear, HD pixels and not big black cock lines through the screen. Meaning that the scanline-less art is how its meant to be seen crts were just a technological limitation. Now that we have LEDs we can see it as it was meant to be played.

          See PICREL again. Another example

kek, this is why I’m against all the copes people implement on flat panels trying to emulate the ‘CRT look’
        >muh filters
They work by blocking/dimming half the pixels on the screen, resulting in a dull dark image. This wasn’t an issue on a real CRT because CRT phosphors are bright and bloom out.
        >muh black frame insertion to reduce motion blur
Makes the image look even darker and duller than scanline filters do. Looks horrible in-person.

Are you converting an HDMI signal to a red white yellow somehow

No, I use an old GPU with analogue out, an HD 7850. CRT emudriver allows you to output a 240p RGBs signal. From there I just used an old VGA cable to make a breakout cable to plug in the R/G/B/Sync connectors into the monitor.

Most CRT filters look terrible but some of the filters have bloom and phosphor adjustments so they don’t darken the image and are a lot less straining on the eye. I just prefer something like pic related usually though, maybe with a ntsc filter
