I can’t fucking remember because I mentally checked out when reading it in college but from what I recall there’s always this big bad entity known as lord english teased who creates himself through causality shit and has always existed/is already here etc. then they introduce 2 other characters of the same race or some shit who interact with the current cast all normal and once a certain code is written or conditions are met or some weird time shit happens the dude is legit born into the universe FROM those two other characters, so if gaster is just sans and papyrus split and his consciousness is spread out then it seems like a lord english type deal I guess, I don’t fucking know, toby worked closely on ideas/story with

this specific personality, caliborn, goes onto to become lord english by merging with several other characters, none of which really have any impact on lord english as a character, via some complicated bullshit that isn’t really even explained in the comic-

Gaster is only mentioned by NPCs that only spawn in extremely unlikely circumstances. There’s a very low chance you run into any of them.

He has a shitload of fun events you can run into that are rare, plus a ton of content in the files intended to be datamined

There’s like 3 areas in Hotland that have a chance of having a grey NPC who will mention Gaster by name and a bit of info about him before disappearing. There are also other such random events but they don’t mention him directly. There’s also a "Sound Test" room where the only songs are all unused short songs, including one called Gaster’s Theme which after listening for a few seconds prompts the text "Thank you for your feedback, See you soon!" and kicks you out.

There’s a handful of rare RNG encounters that hint his existence, but the majority is from datamined content. The hidden content in question is clearly designed to be found only through datamining, though, part of the whole "outside the game world" gimmick.
