Star citizen is a broken mess but they are slowly adding more interesting content.-

People are desperate for a good multiplayer space game. I’ve been tempted to buy star citizen because doing multi crew stuff sounds fun as fuck while it’s fucking awful in Elite. I just want a game with ship interiors and flying around doing stuff as a group.
If starbase wasn’t so buggy and clearly still in an alpha state I would be playing that more instead. Meanwhile I tried the citizen free play shit and couldn’t get more than 30 fps. If/when it ever releases I’ll probably buy the damn thing out of desperation for a new space game.

Unfortunately most block games tend to have ships that just look like giant lego bricks and are kinda boring and a giant pain in the ass to make.
Blowing them up and watching giant chunks break off is pretty satisfying though. Maybe in another decade we can get a game that looks as good as Elite/star citizen but with real damage like space engineers/starbase. Space Sci-fi is still niche though and pvp sci-fi is an even smaller niche.

Empyrion is my favorite of the bunch. It’s got a much simpler block and damage system, but the flip side is that it’s much easier to build stuff and you can do a pretty good job of disguising the fact that it’s all blocks, especially because you can texture and color the blocks at will. There’s more of an actual game to it than most voxel space games as well.

All those new ships aren’t in the game yet so yes you are effectively buying a .png until godking Roberts decides to start modelling it ingame which could vary from a few months up to a decade or longer, apparantly.

They charged $3000 last year for a ship with a max crew size of 80 people, but the game’s servers have a max pop of 50. The technology literally cannot support their game and they are talking about an entire restructuring of the game engine (yet again) to handle it. But they’ll take the money now thanks.

Star Citizen: 111 player flyable ships (as of patch 3.14)That’s ships that you can hop in and fly and do missions in right now, either bought with real money or earned in-game.
Star Citizen is developing at a fucking glacial pace, but I’d say it’s at least as good as Elite Dangerous right now, if not better, and they’re actually adding significant content each quarter now.

Wing Commander and Privateer are revered franchise in boomer PC circles (read: people with money), the space sim genre was basically dead for a decade, they came during the first wave of Kickstarter, and they had this pitch of this alternate world MMO that has been sort of a holy grail for people since the days of MUDs (UO was the same sort of pitch).
It was a combination of everything and people who just wanted a new WC/Freelancer/Privateer/Freespace got drowned out by alternate reality spergs.

I kind of think that at one point, it was legit. A combination of massive feature creep, what I know about Roberts, and some fuckery at the studios, turned it into this massive cluster fuck we see today. This is the perfect game for a lot of people, including me. Many of the claims are also incorrect if you look further into it (context is important). For example, George Miller had been attempting to make the final of installment of his saga for decades, cancelled several times due to arguments with studios, legal issues and his own artist ego. Comparing it to Star Citizen is laughable… It was far worse. Almost a Heaven’s Gate scenario.
