I am so happy I grew up and finished college before Facebook and Twitter. I graduated in 2005 and around that time, social media was in its infancy, with the most popular sites at the time being Friendster and MySpace.
I can’t imagine being a dumb and foolish kid/teenager growing up in this age of social media and having all your fuck-ups be eternally available online for all to see and can never be erased from the internet.
Kids have the right to make mistakes and screw up without that kind of a punishment haunting them forever.-

I think what really turned things to shit was the Arab Spring.
Not the Arab Spring itself, but rather the fact that social media played a huge role in it. That was when people realized that social media (particularly Twitter) could be used as platforms for activism. Tons of people started desiring that same level of power and attention that activists in the Middle East got.
Twitter was always cancer, even in its infancy, but what tipped things over the edge and changed popular perceptions on Twitter and social media in general was that particular event.-

This. I went through my teenage years as social media was beginning to become prevalent and I just didn’t participate in it. Most of the loner/outsider kids just didn’t have much of a social media presence at all unless it was under an pseudonym and they were blogging about vidya or anime or whatever else interested them.
Even now, you can easily spot the “weird” kid in a social group, since they’re usually far away from the crowd, with headphones in as they just wander around aimlessly. Bonus points if they say that they don’t like getting their picture taken.
