GuestYeah, but where? rutracker, abandonedware sites? both of those are pretty sketchy. Usually I just go to steam underground and download clean steam files to play on goldberg emu or go to archive.org and snag the rom if it’s playable on emulator, but this game is obviously not on steam nor on gog, nor a console game
I have no idea where to even begin looking.

GuestI’ve been using that method for a while. It’s great for small sized games but larger ones are a pain due to download speed restrictions etc from the sites they upload to. Links also go dead fairly often and you might need to request a new link. I don’t get why they don’t just use yandex disk. I got metro 2033 redux and the link was 2 years old, whereas the more recent metro exodus was like a couple months old and the links were already dead. Not every game is on there either, (still waiting for BM03) but you can always put in a request.
occasionally you will have to use steamless to unpack the EXE but otherwise most games run flawlessly

GuestNone of that is scary. It’s unsettling sure, except Phasmophobia which is just jump scares the game. You’d have a more entertainment playing Five Nights at soiboyz and actually get spooked by the "monsters."
The problem with a lot of games is that they don’t even try to actually scare you, it’s mostly jump startles scattered around with barely any atmosphere to give context. Dead Space was good for atmospheric dread, but it still was only startled you for cheap scares. Another one was Eternal Darkness Sanity’s Requiem, but it barely had any spooks in it and was mostly just messing with you.
Call of Chtulu was good, but played like absolute fucking ass.
Darkwood was good as it was genuinely unsettling and while it did use jump starts alot, it did straight up scare the fuck of you with shit like hearing thing beating the door down around the corner and looking for you.
Alien Isolation can be good if the AI doesn’t take a massive shit and bug out.-

As someone who has enjoyed the game, it most certainly does. I never found them cheap, however, like most jumpscares.I guess it’s because you know what you’re getting into, that the room you’re in is in fact haunted, and that the actual spooky jumps don’t really "scream" at you like five night faggots.

This is a bit reductive. I think its more apt to say that it isnt a particularly "effective" horror game. The ambience and context are genuinely good for a horror aesthetic, they just are very predictable in their methods. Dead Space has the exact same problem tbh -

They are visual novels in the same way Ace Attorney is. Point & Click investigating with the light puzzle solving and then a kind of boss battle exorcism with two different outcomes depending on how you go about it at the end of each case.

GuestBecuse it’s literally superior to Beetle and Mednafen and it’s not "out of nowhere" seeing as it’s continuation of Beetle and Beetle is abandoned and hasn’t been updated in ages.
It also has more features that Beetle and Mednafen don’t support such as proper widescreen.-

GuestGood example is broken car tires in Gran Turismo 2 on Beetle, but perfectly fine on DuckStation.
PGXP (the perspective/z-buffer correction) also had extra work done to it in DuckStation and is superior to the old implementation in original Beetle.-

GuestDuckStation has much better upscaling than Beetle for starters, including proper framebuffer scaling which Beetle and Mednafen don’t have.
Under the hood, DuckStation is a fork of Beetle with extra work done to it while original Beetle assaid wasn’t updated in a long while.

GuestI literally have like 5 emulators installed at once, most of which I’ve used for like 15-20 years now.
You can literally save controller setups in most modern emulators as pre-sets you load up as you wish. I still don’t see why you would need "20" different setups if ya use a typical DualShock or Xbox controller.
Same thing with other configs. There’s maybe one or two settings you MAY need to change these days per game, but most often you do not.

GuestSoma is so lame after the first 40 minutes or so. Once you’re told you’re a literal soulless automaton, there’s no reason to be afraid anymore.
And no they’re not zombie wolves. They’re dogs. It’s implied they’re infected German Shepherds because there are kennels in Black Plague and I think even in Penumbra.

GuestJust started playing it since it came up on Gamepass. It’s okay I guess. Glad I didn’t pay extra for it. Starts off with a family murder suicide which was a little darker than I was expecting but it’s been kind of dull since then. And surprisingly difficult for a walking simulator since darkness hurts you.

GuestOh man let me tell you about why I fucking HATE Visage. The game prior to going full release was pretty fucking great, its a horror niche in that it wasnt total walking simulator and kind of toted a line on survival horror with its item management and systems in place to fight back in certain sections. Where it got absolutely fucking terrible is when it entered development hell and got a rushed release. They slapped the Hospital chapter onto it which ruined all its early pacing and called it complete. Visage has some of the most memorable moments I have experienced in a game, and my first playthrough filled me with dread, yet an absolute desire to know where all this ends up. This is how I would fix the game if I knew how to mod it:
>Remove the Hospital chapter outright
it adds nothing to the story and just serves to frustrate anyone who was enjoying the game
>Remove the ability to select your chapters
Game should be more linear in its presentation of its story, the kids room should always be the intro chapter as it serves as a great main tutorial surrounding the games mechanics (hence why it was the first fucking released during early access). The second should be the Mirror chapter and the third should just be the video tape hunt which ultimately leads to the ending of the gameAnd thats pretty much all fucking it on how to fix the game. I will defend this as an absolutely great horror title until the day I die, but FUCK me do I HATE the Devs for letting themselves get burned out and release the game with terrible additional content.

GuestIt’s good if you like horror survival games. Cant fight back, instant death if caught,, etc. There’s pros and cons but I’m mostly liking it. I can’t say it’s anything completely new but there’s a lot of cool visuals and the sound design is spectaculat. Im playing it with my gf and her little sister and it still scares the fuck out of us. I don’t feel like it will have much replayability but that kinda goes for a lot lot modern games. I recommend getting it if it’s on sale but if you got the money, it’s worth the buy.

GuestNothing has ever made me as terrified as Alien Isolation. Heart just pumping as you know the Alien is stalking you and trying to play cat and mouse with it is terrifying. Even the Androids are terrifying, especially combined in segments with the Alien because if you make a lot of noise it’s going to attract the Alien to your position and you will have two things trying to kill you then.

-
October 15, 2021 at 4:08 am #414256

GuestIf you use the vents a lot, the AI will eventually start searching them. From what I remember the AI basically starts to learn what you’re doing to hide from the alien and will direct the alien towards searching those places. For example if you hide in lockers over and over again the alien will eventually start to understand you’re hiding in them. If you hide in vents all the time it will learn you’re hiding in vents.
If you mix things up and hide in different places each encounter it will trick the AI into not searching those places.

GuestEven if you play it how I described, you can still get many instances in which the alien figures out where you are or just randomly walks into your location as its searching around and you get caught. It has plenty of surprises like that. I’ve even had it trick me by going back up in the ceiling, and then I get out from under a desk or a bed in the hallway and start walking around again and then boom it pops right back down and gets me.

GuestI don’t get this argument. I like how long the game is, I wish more games had this kind of beef to them.
There’s a good middle ground between a short <10 hour game and huge repetitive open world games that have hundreds of hours of content. Alien Isolation is a good 20+ hours if you take your time and explore, closer to 30 if you REALLY take your time and explore and get all the collectibles and everything.

Whilst I also enjoy the length of the game itself, I do think it has way too many takeout ending moments. -

GuestMy thinking is absolutely on the ‘overstaying its welcome’ wagon. by the time I got to the space suit and grabbed by the alien and nested I was thinking "oh dear lord how much longer is this gonna be". Had an absolute similar experience with The Evil Within, where anything after the Sunflower fields felt like absolute unnecessary padding, and judging by the games ending bossfight, I dont think the Devs even expected most people to make it that far.

GuestOne particular thing that pissed me off a great deal, and I was already disconnected from the game at this point, is the armored goon enemy still making a late game appearance. By that point everyone aboard knows the Sevastopol is a space-coffin with explosions and murderous androids. That some human supergoon would still be around trying to kill me broke my brain.

GuestIt’s not the length most people complain about, it’s how drawn out the third act feels with multiple events that feel like an ending and all those safe space areas with NPCs and them throwing a billion necromorphs at you for the last four hours. Its pacing towards the end is legitimately bad. It’s a great game for its genre and that’s essentially it’s only flaw but it’s a valid complaint.

I get the point but I’m not sure to what extent it’s too long. Some people think it should have ended with the air lock segment, I feel if it could have cut down some of the post reactor content and ditched the stupid kidnapping segment it would have been fine, I like a meaty 15 hour game.

GuestMy only problem with Song of Horror is I played it when it was fresh per episode release and before they did the big release patch it was too easy to lose people through absolutely no fault of your own. The breath holding minigame in the second episode (I think) was practically RNG, it didn’t function the same as the instruction popup said, you basically had to do the opposite for it not to immediately kill you.

GuestA couple years ago I watched a friend of mine stream a playthrough of this. I’m a little bitch that can’t handle horror games so I don’t exactly have any point of reference but this looked pretty enjoyable if you’re into that kind of thing. I know with absolute certainty that upon reaching the first low-visibility section, I would have turned 720 degrees in my chair and closed the game. Hell I couldn’t even handle the VN section of Black Souls 2, as soon as the problem wasn’t one that I could steamroll with sheer grind power, I had to turn on distracting music and wait out the whole section.
Scary things are a little less scary if you’re listening to YMCA, or Macho Man, or Hot Cop.-

GuestI won’t spoil anything for them, but I did find some parts a bit stress inducing during the earlier parts of the game. There’s only one specific jump scare section I can think of that scared me, but a couple sections got my heart going.
Still, don’t think it’s bad enough to be unplayable for most people.A couple years ago I watched a friend of mine stream a playthrough of this. Definitely ruins the atmosphere for most horror games, but some of the most fun I’ve had was playing horror games with friends when I was young and jumpy. Makes it easier to progress too imo

Extremely underrated GZDoom mod on par with Cry of Fear and surpasses it in many ways.
It has Survival mechanics akin to the Stalker games, great visuals, and does a great job with "3D audio". Definitely recommend playing with headphones. The only thing I’ll complain about is that the "metaphor" the game’s going for is a bit cliche but I think it makes up for it with an interesting setting and decent voice acting. -

GuestI see a lot of people suggest Fatal Frame 1, but I will insist that you try and play with the Japanese dub if its possible to do so with subs. The game’s voice acting killed the atmosphere for me at times because of how hilariously bad some of it was. It’s not all bad, but its a game I think is worth taking seriously and that only hurts the experience.
Fatal Frame 2, on the other hand, is one of the best horror games I’ve played and I don’t think I’m being hyperbolic. At its release the game was visually impressive, but it still hasn’t aged enough to feel distractedly outdated mostly thanks to how dark the game is, but still.
Fatal Frame 3 is definitely worth playing, but I didn’t like it as much as FF2 for a reason I can’t say without spoiling it. Pretty cool story, but doesn’t achieve the degree of insanity the 2nd game pulls off
If you’re going to play only one, I suggest FF2, but I’m fairly biased since it was the game that got me into the seriesAnyone know if the later Fatal Frame games are worth emulating? Don’t know much about IV, but V seems to have stealth sections which is a bit strange to me.

GuestThere’s also this patch for the Wii version in case that undub is poorly done or whatever
https://www.projectsae.es/project-zero-2-wii-edition/proyecto-undub.html
Just translate the page, the subs will still be in english

GuestI see a lot of people suggest Fatal Frame 1, but I will insist that you try and play with the Japanese dub if its possible to do so with subs. The game’s voice acting killed the atmosphere for me at times because of how hilariously bad some of it was. It’s not all bad, but its a game I think is worth taking seriously and that only hurts the experience.

Thanks for this. Thought I had seen everything in these spook threads, so I appreciate it.

GuestThis is going to sound cheesy as fuck, but face your fears.
I won’t give you my life story, but I was such a pussy when I was a kid that I slept on the top bunk because I thought my sister’s dolls were going to kill me in my sleep.
A point came when being scared became fun because I could quickly remind myself that I wasn’t in any danger, but this came after years of subjecting myself to scary shit because there was a part of me that enjoyed the adrenaline rush I’d get from it.
I think it’s best to embrace it and have fun with it and eventually it’ll get to a point where most shit just doesn’t phase you. Granted, I still get disturbed from the idea of someone knocking on my window at night and shit like that, but I’d have better luck winning the lottery than spooky shit like that occurring.
Also granted, I’m still (reasonably) afraid of the being stranded in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight along with death/dying, but I could probably get over the ocean by putting myself out there.

https://mega.nz/#!Us1XTaII!cglH0dZOaH5yQEm4cnEh3eyUz4bIf6rACQqcVzkb4HcMount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
DON’T use W10’s own virtual disc app! It will not work.
Don’t install under C:Program Files ! This will cause issues. For SH2, Follow the Enhanced Edition homesite’s instructions to the T, and you should be fine.
If you’re mega lazy, just unpack the "Bare Essentials" to the game’s folder, and you’re done! The "Enhanced .EXE" is also the no-CD crack. For 3 & 4, check the Guide or PC Gaming Wiki.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
I recommend the DuckStation, but most emulators work OK as well.>Protips
-Play in the release order.
-Start with Normal difficulty! Don’t do hard on 1st run (espec. SH2).
-Replaying them all is recommended; tons of replay value.
-Turn down the ingame Brightness setting, for better gamma & colors!
-Leg it, or sneak! No need to kill everything.
-Turning OFF the flashlight can really help w/ stealth! -
