No, you are. Use critical thinking. By addressing the decline of the video game industry with a claim of antisemitism, he’s implying that the advent of garden gnomes into the industry lead to a general decline, and that garden gnomes, when attacked for reasons of negative or anticonsumerist practices will play the antisemitism card to shift a critical complaint into an ad homenim to make the critic appear villainous.

Use your fucking brain, it’s a good damn joke, retard.

I mean, they aren’t, you just have literally decades of games to choose from, and can therefore always choose the best of the best.

If you just played three random games from this year, and three random games from, say, 2001, you probably wouldn’t find the old games to be markedly better.

Morrowind fag here, bugs off the top of my head:
            >master medium armor trainer programmed and in the files, devs literally just forgot to place the NPC anywhere in the world
            >master smithing trainer doesn’t offer training
            >NPCs being shuffled slightly to the side every time the game loads a save or area, resulting in stilt strider NPCs eventually being shuffled into unreachable places or drowning to death
            >falling through terrain because it’s an Elder Scrolls game that one’s just a gimme
            >Incorrect quest directions in the journal
            >Using lockpicks to instant kill enemies and NPCs
Also not a bug but definitely a dick move:
            >Master enchanting trainer is a random hostile NPC in one of the many dungeons, and without knowing beforehand you will almost certainly murder them without ever realizing.

I am an old boomer who played many of the games you mentioned when they were new… and even I tried to say, “games are better than ever” up until a few years ago. But nope, they are not. Modern games are soul-crushing. They are designed to hook people into a tedious loop of bullshit to keep selling them digital trinkets. The mechanics are often worse and the games are less fun to play. Devs use telemetry data to tune their games which ends up making every game play the same. So on and so forth. I was playing a FPS shooter and I realized the gameplay is just filling up meters. I was playing it because they got me addicted to meter-filling, not because I enjoyed the game as I did on FPS games starting with Quake 1.

And this is when new games actually come out, it’s obvious devs are relying so much on remasters because they lost the ability to make good games on their own, like when western civilization lost Rome’s recipe for concrete and didn’t rediscover it for 1000 years.

I think going forward I am going to be playing a lot more older games and just enjoy those on their own terms. I’m even going to stay away from remakes/remasters because more often than not they suck. I have a 3700X+1080TI PC that is basically a emu machine now.

Modern day gaming is basically like gambling which is why the industry will never fail and reboot like it did with the crash in 83. There’s too much money to be made from garbage now. The games industry really is permanently fucked.

            >Why did the PS2 have such a good fucking library
It initially had no games but sold phenomenally well because of the DVD player novelty. Then all of the devs began making games for it. Then the other two consoles came out and by that point it was already too late for them. The Xbox and GCN got absolutely destroyed, despite both being considerably more powerful and/or cheaper than the PS2. The games were already on the PS2.

Games both required less people to produce, and were less popular.
In any organisation, the more people, the lower the quality, both of the people ( in intelligence, morality, productivity, genuinity, et cetera ) and of the product.

Small organisations NEED competency and/or passion, or they can’t work.
Big organisations WILL devolve into social scheming, and so can’t work.

Tbh nights, like a number of Sega games such as panzer dragoon or sonic are more cult classics than objectively good. The whole game design of Sega is amazing because they would always come up with exciting and cool ideas that didn’t always make perfect games, however most of them ended up being good enough with some investment to understand the intentions of the devs. The only comparable devs today would be super giant games, I guess. Their games are not for everyone, but somehow their library looks pretty amazing as a whole, and will be memorable for a long time.

the first episode was mostly hitscanners which was annoying as hell, specially because they placed em in ambush positions, you basically had to memorize the layout if you didnt want to be constantly losing health

later episodes have more projectile enemies

I think the level design was just such a huge downgrade. The first episode is nothing but great levels, where the rest of the episodes just feel like they are mostly filler between a few standout levels.

Also, all episodes are pretty fileld to the brim with cultists, and I don’t think that there were enough projectile enemies to make a difference, I can only really think of the bloated butcher (who can be trivialised by crouching) as a prevalent one, along with the hell hounds and choking hands that can just be total game enders if they hit you depending on the version of the game you’re playing.

Doom vanilla maps are agreed to be pretty bad, only Romero cocksuckers deny it. But there are far higher quality fanmade stuff around. Once you play those, it’s very hard to come back to the original maps.

        Absolutely correct
Doom 1 and 2 were pretty much just ok when I played through them the first time recently, but when I got to Quake I think it may have become one of my favorite games of all time

I don’t really think Doom becomes fun till you go mod/wad hunting

SFIII is an incomplete game in English as it was a 3 part series in japan and Sega never bothered translating part 2 and 3. SFII is generally regarded as the best in the series and you won’t miss anything by playing them out of order anyway.

The combo system and having all of your party members playable at all times were amazing ideas (FFX ripped off the latter). Combo offensive magic, healing magic, defensive magic. Tier 3 attacks. There was so much variety in the game and reasons to use your party members other than Ryu. The other minigames were fun too but fishing was top tier I agree. The world dragon animations were beautiful and the game had fantastic low-poly art. 3 is a good game but it’s not well optimized whereas 4 is otherwise a well-oiled machine with a set narrative, more expansive world, and more interesting set pieces. Content being cut sucks but 4 is a superior product in every way.

What makes 3 so appealing and comfy is the normalness of the world. There’s no evil empire, no apocalypse, no dark god/eldritch abomination that’s is going to wake up and end the world as we know it. The world is doing just fine, no one is trying to conquer or destroy it, there’s no war. The "bad guy" already won hundreds of years before the game even started. Instead, the journey of the protagonists is of self-discovery.

It must be that! Just like Grandia, it begins with a strong character focus, what you’re doing is highly relevant because it affects the characters directly, you’re not enslaved to an obvious plot progression.
The feeling i most commonly associate to BoF4 is exactly one of lacking agency or investment in the characters, also perhaps because of how similar they are to the previous game. Everything is charming, yet it fails to make me care before i’m slogging through dungeons.
Both BoF3 and Grandia do lose some edge when that "main plot" takes hold, so thanks for letting me notice that.
I still think BoF5 is the best in terms of narrative, if nothing else.

Yeah, i would almost recommend getting a complete save file to just get all the extras and play for the story if you’ve finished it before.
A PS2 with OPL and and an old IDE drive is pretty comfy once you get file transfer figured out. It’s pretty trouble free and you can move save files around easily too.

The only times I would say a game has actually ‘aged poorly’ is if it suffers due to the technology at the time which makes it harder to go back to today. Like the first two Twisted Metals are were among my favorite games on the PS1 but trying to play them for extended periods of time now with the choppy low frame rates and warping textures is hard.

There are no modern games as good as people say old games are, and there never will be again, because game design has fundamentally changed to hold the player’s hand any time they’re not being shown a hollywood movie while indie games only pay homage to the IDEA of old games, rather than adhering to their design principles.

this shit right here, you can see it happen in the change in difficulty between crash bandicoot 1 and 3
2 had just the right level of difficulty, but by 3 the difficulty was almost gone and it was more about HOW COOL everything looked instead of HOW GOOD the game was

I once marathoned the trilogy, 100%ing them in a single day. It took a mere 3 hours to 100% Crash 1 and 2 (for both, not each), and the rest of the day was entirely spent on Crash 3, most of it on the goddamned relics.

Its not that all old games are better, there’s plenty of SNES shovelware. Its just that there’s been time for the good ones to rise to the top. If an old game is still talked about, its almost always good, while a new game is always a gamble.

Nobody said all old games were better, but for the most part we all knew what the good ones were when they came out, they got great reviews and were popular because the people writing about video games were all fans, not failed English majors with blue hair and they pronouns. You can read the old mags to see. Like today DKC is considered one of the best SNES games. Back in 1994, DKC was considered one of the best SNES games.

Tv is booming and getting some good shit because streaming has been real popular.
Comics have been going downhill for a huge while now, I think this week they made super man gay or something, also some /co/ fags might deny it but manga outsells it by a lot and the only comic that outsells everything is a children’s book.

Cartoons also have been doing mostly shit as well with everything being cancelled out of nowhere besides a few exceptions.

i do believe that in many cases, old=good and new=bad and that isn’t due to nostalgia. Load up an emulator and see for yourself. Certain indies are definitely good games, but still do not provide that deep polish and mechanics that some older games provide. It’s hard to describe when you’re immersed in some 90s/2000s title despite the shitty graphics and whatnot. Modern indies can be good. For instance, Hollow Knight is great and enjoyable (fuck off retarded contrarians), but far from Super Metroid and Sotn. Lots of indies provide a great first impression, but when you’re some hours in, you see the cracks and lack of polish. I fucking wish modern indies and AA/AAA could outcompete 90s/2000s games. Sadly, that’s not the case.

WoW classic dungeons vs FFXIV "dungeons"

        • #390354

          Guest

          FF14 dungeons are actually upsetting.
Why do they exist? They dont have interesting layouts or gimmicks, the trash is all trivial and the boss fights are mildly amusing for the first time.
Thats a lot of development time that goes into making the assets for completely braindead simple content.
Modern WoW made dungeons all kinda the same length with more or less the same amount of bosses but they are filled with gimmicks and unique trash mob interactions. They are designed that way to be run multiple times with their M+ difficulty settings.
I do not agree with that design decision that much, but at least I can see the idea behind it. But FF14 dungeons? For what purpose? They even had more unique designs in ARR but they made them mega linear, removed basically any sort of gimmicks from them and even added invisible walls so that people dont pull too many mobs at once, which only happens because they are so piss easy anyways.
          Fuck them.

Its honestly disgusting. I hope they bring back the crazy dungeon designs that favor multiple play styles and play through. Using acrobatics to skip stupid shit or magic to unlock doors was fun. In Skyrim there was nothing but railroading.

GAMES, in general, are just amazing. I desperately wish for a world in which all exclusives are a thing of the past and we fall under a universal console that can play any and all games; much like a Blu Ray player plays all movies from every studio (in specific regions but that’s a different story).

Gaming is a relatively new medium with a VERY weak focus on preservation in a legal sense. Gamers today and forever more should have a legal way to play any and all old games they wish to. Otherwise, how many more generations can we count on just believing that the classics are good if they are harder and harder to get ahold of and play?

I wish that would happen but I don’t see it happening on a technical level, aside from using emulators which we already have a PC for that, but also whoever made that console would likely be sued by everyone in the industry.

Maybe I didn’t word it correctly but my wish is for a universally agreed upon console by all companies together to develop for. Of course, this could never happen without a serious overhaul in how the consumer demands more for themselves. Console wars and company love is scary. Even if a corporation does no wrong and only releases amazing games, you should STILL demand more as a consumer.

People were pooping on Kotaku the other day because they shared an article on how emulation is already running Metroid Dredd perfectly. They were clutching their pearls that anyone would dare say to steal a Nintendo game.

I love Nintendo games and always have, but Nintendo (and their fanbase) are the LARGEST problem holding us back from this ever happening. Sony/Xbox/PC fanboys are all tied for second not shortly behind.

          Game preservation is a thing
Even if its not possible to preserve hard copies of things they try to maintain a digital copy and an emulator that can play it

Absolutely it is. However, unfortunately, it is all in a very shady point on a legal end. It doesn’t take much more than all the major video game companies to band together again and say they want to stop emulation to make it happen. Will it? Probably not. However, it is a real problem. It would be like if the majority of old movies were only available through torrents. Sure, most people know what they are doing and can download it (and for free!) but they could go away at any point.

You say that but the DS led to the creation of many unique games that wouldn’t exist if not for the dual screen gimmick

Who is to say that this console couldn’t be a, more or less, universal PC-lite that couldn’t handle running peripherals made by different companies? A DS Bluetooth controller is a possibility. If you then say, "well that will cause everyone to make their own controllers and oversaturate the market…" then you don’t already realize they are already doing that AND with their own consoles to boot.

I promise you, and all of you, this sort of idea would benefit us all.
