DA:O is a great example of how to pull inspiration from different works without actually ripping anything off. Playing it years later after reading some fantasy series gives me a newfound appreciation for how much the original writers cared for the genre. In comparison, Inquisition feels like it was written by people who cant read.

There was no "trap", Wardens had a chance of stopping the horde for some time if Loghain flanked the Darkspawn with his troops.
            >they actually have a chance to withstand blight later on.
Yeah, that’s why he locks himself and his troops in the Capital, ignores the Blight, sends assassins to kill the Warden and keeps screeching about everyone trying to take away his crown.
Face it, Loghain is a petty faggot, a good tactician, but still a faggot. He betrayed Cailan because of the treaty between Orlais and Ferelden the King managed to forge. It’s that simple. Orlais wanted to send their troops to aid against the Blight and Loghain was too paranoid and spastic to accept that so he kills his king.

exactly. the whole point of the treaty was to get cailan to ditch his wife and become a simp for celene. given what we know about cailan and celene’s respective personalities, who would be calling the shots in ferelden? loghain saw his king preparing to sell out the country to some foreign whore and he reacted appropriately.

That doesn’t even matter even though you are correct in that regard. Orlais is 10 times the size of Ferelden so they would dominate regardless.
Cailan was negotiating good terms for Ferelden as Celene’s vassal state.

orlesian’s view fereldens as subhumans. regardless of the terms he negotiated, it would inevitably end up like

                      down the road.
ferelden had just fought a bloody war for independence against these people and some pampered king wanted to throw his people right back into the cuckshed. he deserved to get crushed to death by that ogre and to have his badass armor looted by the warden.

Even if you don’t agree that only happened because Loghain having a barren daughter who was married to the king who needs a heir, there are much better ways to get rid of Cailan other than letting half your army be killed by monsters who are the stuff of nightmares and known to destroy everything they touch in invasions that can only be stopped by the people you killed.
And then he hunts them down because he is paranoid that they will expose him as a betrayer when the main focus of the wardens is always stopping the blight.

That anon is right though. The battle was lost anyway, there was no way to win even if Loghain had entered the fray because we lit the fires too late/the Darkspawn got behind the army. He just wisely chose to turn a loss into an opportunity.

I don’t remember if it was explicitly called out in game, but it’s clear he was planning on betraying him from the start and then he claimed that the Grey Wardens were behind the failed attack because they conspired with Orlais to take the king out. Had he just said that the forces were beyond their scope he would have been called a coward at most but he wouldn’t have a civil war to deal with.
Besides the only darkspawn in the backline were a few that managed to sneak through. The archdemon was in that fight so maybe with the extra forces backing them up, the wardens could have killed it right there.

            >>Basically declares war on the grey wardens a hugely important and influential content spanning group who serve a world-saving function
At this point the Grey Wardens had largely fallen into a mythic state, i.e nobody knows why Grey Wardens are necessary besides the senior members of the order. So, kill two birds with one stone, you get a scapegoat, with none of the pesky arguments since they’re all dead post-ostagar.

            >>Ignores a BLIGHT

Somebody has got to do the dirt and purge your political enemies. It’s convenient there was this psycopath petty noble looking to improve his standing and as such was invested in your regime’s success.

            >grey wardens
            >a hugely important and influential content spanning group who serve a world-saving function
By that point the wardens had regressed into some obscure cultish order full of rapists and murderers that messed with the justice system and leeched money from the governments of the world.
And of course nobody actually knew they were required for killing the arch-demon.

              Yeah the letters.
And Celene manipulating Cailan to unite Ferelden peacefully back to Orlais.

              >purge your political enemies
Howe was kidnapping random nobles from all factions, targeting templars(attacking the church in the middle of a civil war in the middle of an apocalypse is retarded), and even went so far as to plan killing the queen, loghains only actual claim to the throne. Additionally howe was in control of highever, amaranthine, and denerim. He had more power than loghain

Look man, sometimes the people under you go crazy with power.
When all you see is reports on paper they present to you it’s difficult to tell, especially when you have other more important shit going on.
Take Pretorian Guard captains from actual history as an example, the kind of shit they were pulling under emperors’ noses was insane.

Wrong, that’s literally what heriditary monarchy is. Cailan was a young, idealistic kid, not a 60yo wise strategist. With proper guidance, he might’ve been a great king. But why bother when you can stab him in the back, ruin the kingdom and pretend to be king yourself.

                        >But why bother
The thing is Loghain did bother.
Literally for years on end he warned Cailan about Orlais and tried to give him political and military advice only for it to be ignored. By the time of Origins they had a falling out and were on bad terms.
But hearing about Cailan’s plans to divorce his daughter, marry Celene and invite an Orlesian army into the country is what tipped Loghain over the edge.
Even then he was emotionally torn up over it since he really did respect Cailan’s father a lot.

                  >Obviously not, which is why it was done under the table (see Eamon).
                  So it’s treason then?
                  >Intentionally misrepresentation of an already explained situation, not going to bother.
Shockingly ‘They were convenient scape goats’ is not the best defence ever made.
                  >Uh, yeah? You don’t just forget centuries of oppression in two decades retard, you need a complete replacement of all the generations that experienced it before that would even be a feasible idea.
Couching treason in a believable motivation is fine writing, doesn’t make it not treason
                  >Such compelling evidence.
Everyone ‘knows’ wardens can do it (even if they don’t believe it) and they can, and they’re right. Also after the dwarves you have a reputable unbiased third party to support your claims the is literally no reason to not even entertain the possibility after this point (oh wait he was preoccupied with the completely justified coup).
                  >Seething tranny, dilate.
Opposing treason is a left-wing ideology, checks out.

                    >So it’s treason then?
                    >Couching treason
Know what else is treasonous? Inviting back in the Nation and their armies that held your people under bondage for near a century. THAT seems pretty damn treasonous.

                    >Shockingly ‘They were convenient scape goats’ is not the best defence ever made.
Still not addressing the full explanation I see.
                    >"At this point the Grey Wardens had largely fallen into a mythic state, i.e nobody knows why Grey Wardens are necessary besides the senior members of the order."
                    You misconstrued that as:
                    >Blaming the wardens is ok because there hasn’t been a blight for a while
This is inherently dishonest, I shall just respond with some buzzword of some kind from here-on-out if you keep pushing the issue in this manner.

                    >Everyone ‘knows’ wardens can do it
See above. Everyone KNOWS Jesus walked on water. Does that mean he actually can/did?

                    >Also after the dwarves you have a reputable unbiased third party to support your claims the is literally no reason to not even entertain the possibility after this point
No clue what that’s in reference to.

And nah, you use buzzwords, I use buzzwords.

I recruit him every time and then send Hawke to their death in Inquisition, leaving him as one of the most high ranking and experienced of the Wardens. To my shame I read the novels as a teenager. He’s not the monster the game makes him out to be.

I liked the one about the Wardens in the 3rd or 4th blight. All of them dropping like flies with the few that remain at the heading down to the deep roads because the taint has fucked them up really emphasised what the order is all about, and what a blight should look like.
I want a DA game about the wardens when there are more than two of them and I want your companions to die a lot and be replaced with new companions that also die.

The one with Duncan in the Deeproads was alright too.

It’s interesting how anon(s) defending Loghain’s actions ITT use this argument:
      >Bro, he was totally right about Orlais. Didn’t you play the other games? Orlais would’ve invaded.
as if Loghain could see the future and metagame but when he’s being a retard and surrenders the kingdom to the Blight, they go

No retard, I am, can’t speak for others, am saying that from his PoV, with the information he had on hand, it was very goddamn plausible that Orlais was making move on Ferelden.

        >as if Loghain could see the future and metagame
        >Not being a complete retard and trusting a state’s actions at face value is "seeing the future and metagaming

        >when he’s being a retard and surrenders the kingdom to the Blight, they go
        >>H-he didn’t know about the Blight!! Wardens may’ve been as well phonies and liars!
You still haven’t demonstrated how anyone aside from player at the point could know it was a Blight, and second, the Grey Wardens had faded into a mythological organization at that point, there was no reliable information on them, including their word.
