Always disappointed me as a kid when I would go back through a game to see how different it would be with new choices and they were always so hollow or changed nothing outside of a line or two of dialogue. Of course not all did this but enough did that it became noticeable.-
Fucking DA:Origins did this to me. I loved my first playthrough but when I went back through with a different origin and afterward the game played 100% the same it was such a letdown. Not counting choices in the game I mean, just thought the origins would lead to different events than just the first 20 minutes.

well i dunno about that, but it definitely makes sense within the game. the courier is the most powerful being in the world- they never die, they can convince anyone to believe anything, they can kill thousands without taking a scratch, they can reprogram robots with the flick of a wrist, they can sneak right under your nose just by crouching. plus House only has 5 int, so if you’ve got 6 or higher then you’re obviously the best choice of supreme leader of new america

humans are overpowered in the grand majority of fantasy games of this nature, game and tabletop, because the main way in which you get better is either having more options or getting slightly better numbers with those options, so "versatility" actually just makes you that much more objectively powerful because you have an entire new vector of stuff to do instead of like, +2 more to attack rolls or whatever being a dwarf would get you

Past the simple answer of self-inserting, it isbecause both humans and fighters are versatile options (and the more minmaxy options, like half-orc, lizardfolk, the game-breaking aarakocra aren’t in BG3 (at least not yet)). +1 to all stats is solid and doesn’t really need a lot of thought (though personally I don’t care for them since I like darkvision too much) to make it work. Fighters are also very versatile and can fill a wide range of roles, from tanks to big dick damage dealers with optional auxiliary casting. They also get the most ability score improvements (and therefore feat picks) of all the classes with 7.
For D&D Beyond (and D&D 5e in general), humans are so prevalent because most people take Variant Human, which eschews +1 in all stats (which, though helpful, isn’t very useful to begin with since odd numbers don’t help with rolls with the proficiency mechanics) in favor of +1 to two stats (which is the the baseline people really want anyway for character creation to get your main stats to the next even number) and a free feat. Feats are absolutely gently caressing busted, and the ability to get one at level 1 is VERY strong-

even if you filled every encounter with flak guns aarakocra are still strong and pretty much perfect for any dex-based character, especially ranged ones. Level 1 flight is crazy, and the "no medium/heavy armor" restriction is not that bad when you get +2 dex to accelerate light armor being good.

Humans get a bonus feat at character creation and a +2 to an ability of their choosing. It’s ridiculously strong compared to other races. Aasimars are pretty close – they can get a +2 to two abilities, but you can’t handpick them.

They have +2 str and +1 chr, which are the best stats for paladins (and decent for other strength-based characters as well) among the options offered by D&D Beyond (the VGTM aasimars are better but you have to pay for them iirc), especially for paladins focusing on their melee attacks first vs smite damage, and plus get free damage resistance to the element of their choice, which compensates enough for how crappy their breath attack racial is.

I make human characters because it gives me a free feat at level 1. Although I never make just straight fighters. Sometimes I’ll have some fighter levels because I’m a bittervet at D&D and like to plan out busted and broken multi class builds
