And honestly? Advent Children was a big part of it. The movie wasn’t good, but the stylistic design of it and the technical achievement to display it, which just so happened to come out in the very early age of YT, in time to be immortalized in about a billion AMVs, is what cemented Cloud and Sephiroth as ((weeb)) icons in the early days of the net, which transfers into their ubiquity today. FFVII might’ve given them character and substance, but Advent Children is what gave them the necessary aesthetic to transcend the tests of time. VIIfags owe a lot to that movie these days, and they often don’t realize it.

Lucina, Roy and Chrom are just skins so who gives a shit? Marth, Ike and Robin would have been enough, I think corrin is the only real worthless inclusion and byleth is whatever. Yeah, but I’m saying I think it would be if it had the same budget put into it and none of the other KH games existed. It feels weird to attribute it’s success to a well-received 2005 game and then endless handheld spinoffs, like how it’d feel weird to attribute any modern FF’s success to FFX.
Like maybe I’m biased but I knew way more people who fell off the series after 2 than stayed the course or even got into it afterwards, so I just don’t feel like KH was some powerhouse franchise in that downtime.

Who cares about bringing everyone back if you didn’t like them the first time around?
And people don’t care about new characters if they don’t like them, especially given you have to pay extra for them. They’ll end up not buying them, and then wish that extra time spent making this character they don’t like was spent on making one they did.

Objectively the most popular FF protag, also technically legacy for Ultimate.
>Hero
Shill pick for DQ11 in the West, but also a series that is so long running that the fact it didn’t have one before this was somewhat baffling. Having the Hero from the most popular on in Japan (3), the most popular one overseas (8), and the most well liked after that who primarily uses a sword (4) was icing on the cake.
>Sephiroth
An excuse to scoot in what was missing with Cloud in Ultimate because SE are cheap bastards who ‘technically’ played ball, and nothing else. That being said, one of the most iconic villains due to FF7’s notoriety alone. Wish we got a Dissidia-inspired stage instead of another FF7 one, personally.
>Sora
A legitimate never ever due to the Mouse that got in by a hair’s breadth and, as stated by Sakurai, the de facto winner of the old character poll from Smash 4. Lacking in Disney (which is to be expected), but also having the second most extensive costume list after Hero. If nothing else, one of the most unexpected ways to end the pass.I think they did pretty well, overall.
