This is a Voice of Cards thread.

Have you played the demo? Does it make you want to purchase the full product? Just what is Mr. Yoko Taro thinking of this time?

Holy fuck just what year do you think this is? Nintendo don’t censor third parties anymore (though regrettably Treehouse is settling back into their SJW tricks with first party games). Censoring third parties is Playstation’s gig now.

The demo was alright. The actual game needs more challenge or a hard mode. The characters in the demo completely demolish every encounter.

The party in the demo are almost guaranteed to just be overpowered because they are the tutorial party and it gets more difficult when you switch to the real party.

Mechanics-wise, the demo seemed like a totally uninspired cut-and-paste JRPG. The card premise is just an excuse to do things cheaply, it adds nothing unique. It’s like SquareEnix wanted to make an RPG for as cheaply as possible and attract people who are fans of Taro et al. Maybe they’ll do something Triple Triad-esque with the card minigame, that might be minimally cool.

That said, I’m excited for the game and will absolutely buy it because I love Yoko Taro and it’s obviously a Taro game, writing-wise.

Agreed, although idk how they’re going to make the game naturally challenging given the limited mechanics of the demo.

I just need faster animations, that was my only issue. Besides that I’m waiting on the word of "it gets weird" when it releases, if I hear that I’m picking it up if not then maybe on a sale. I like Yoko Taro’s work and I’m sure there is something in this game that’ll provide his style but the demo felt extremely normal.

100% agree, why the fuck does the stupid pawn take so fucking long before it can move again?

Automata had a really normal demo too, didn’t it? Tragic end but besides the deaths of all your comrades at the initial flight down, there wasn’t anything alarming or pointing towards the fuckery that was ending C onwards.

Automata demo had some hooks though, the monologue at the start, the darting between shmup and 3rd person action, great music, and then ending on 2b/9s killing themselves. Voice of Cards demo was just jrpg but cards. I’m near certain that Voice of Cards will get weird but I’m just going to wait to make sure come launch day.

I had a great time with it. I don’t know how much it’s going for or when it’s releasing, but if it’s around $30ish and soon, I’ll probably end up getting it. My years playing /tg/ stuff has made rolling dice like crack to me so being able to "roll" it in this game makes it a contender for me.

I just find the combat to be a bit slow. Not gonna lie, I was really pushing to finish it. I liked Fuga a lot because it felt quick and snappy. And is there an option for a japanese commentator? I can’t find it on the demo. Don’t ask me why, my weeb ass just wants it.

I only saw the trailer, but I hope it’s like what I wish Hand of Fate was.
HoF had this terrible 3d combat, but amazing presentation otherwise. If it just kept everything as "cards on a table" it would have been great.

that’s literally how it is, from dialogue, to map, to combat, to shops, everything is cards, even the menus(which can get a tad slow at times, hopefully they speed up some animations in the full game)

Yes, and it does. I like how it is a traditional JRPG but made with cards, not an actual card game. It’s really unique. Still, no physical version is a complete turn off. I don’t know if I’ll buy it. I may wait to see if somebody makes it.

I played the demo and wasn’t impressed. I wish they well all out with the cards by having deckbuilding for each character and shit.
As it is now it just feels like budget Dragon Quest rather than an unique take on the genre.

I played the demo and enjoyed it. Only issue I had with it was thr slow speed of transitions would get really boring in a long game.

Had no idea Taro was involved. Hopefully that means the story won’t be as basic as it appeared to be with just evil dragon awakens.

Highly unlikely to purchase it. Movement is too slow because of how it shows the cards getting revealed, and that is gonna get annoying in the long run. It got annoying in the demo. Honestly the game just feels slow and plodding in general, without anything to make it worth it.
Combat is about as boring as possible, even by menu combat standards. The card conceit made me assume a card-game like system would be used for combat, which I am not overly fond of in itself, but it might have made it somewhat interesting. Sadly, it is just the most basic bitch possible menu combat, and easy at that. I never felt even remotely challenged playing this game, except perhaps in bothering to play the game at all. The only thing that really kept me going through to the end of the demo was waiting for the other shoe to drop. This is a yoko taro game, so it has to have some nonsense in it, right? If there is, the demo went out of its way to say there isn’t. Everything about the story and characters is about as generic as possible. Even fucking dragon quest feels less generic than this.
The art is nice, but frankly, that isn’t enough to get me to buy it. The game jerks off the narrator by saying how it is best experienced with sound and listening to the narration, but honestly the narration wasn’t anything special.

      Honestly, I was pretty disappointed.

        better question.

How come no one ever made a CoM like game for handhelds with improved tweaks? I always thought the GBA version was superior and it takes too long for the PS2 version to get decent.

        • #379410
          Anonymous
          Guest

Too many moving parts, if I had to guess. The thing about CoM was that there were a few subtle parts interwoven within the big stuff like Sleights.
For example, the Keyblade cards. You can’t pretend that over 90% of people who played it payed any worthwhile attention to the different stats. The only times they even realized or cared about them being different was setting up Sonic Blade decks. But if you pay attention while using them, the effects vary wildly. And that’s before accounting for the variety of effects via enemy cards, the right drop and your deck will be wildly different between playthroughs.
There’s a lot of parts, and if somebody made a similar knock-off, most would expect it to ‘improve’ upon the formula, which means even more things to account for. It’s a hell of an undertaking. Hopefully one day it’ll be iterated upon again.

They need to speed up menu navigation and animations in general. Random encounters aren’t fun at all when everything takes ages and the demo was also way too easy. Otherwise I really enjoyed it and the narration is great.

I though it was cool and obviously soulful, unlike most other people I thought the combat was neat-o and the "gem" system seems like it could get fucky as you get more expensive skills, planning out how to execute your mega move without getting stunlocked or something because generating gems makes you pass on turn. The amount of people who didn’t actually pay full attention to the gameplay and tutorials only to complain about it being not deep or whatever is pretty steep. I’m sure the starting party will either be weaker or the game increases drastically in difficulty overtime with systems as stated before. The localization and script were both very nice, they lined up well and matched the personality of the JP dialogue. With how "indie" it is, I almost guarantee the story is going to go off the rails, even more so than typical Taro fashion. It’s either a Drakengard tie-in and they didn’t feel comfortable trying to revive a dead mostly unpopular franchise with a full-size 3D title or the story gets extremely crazy. Or both, for that matter. Either way, I’m excited.

The demo feels like it didn’t take advantage of its format and I’m worried the rest of the gameplay won’t be very interesting. I don’t like the VA for the narration either, just feels a bit too young and carefree.

This is definitely intentional, at least for the JP voice. Can’t say much about the dub, but the JP voice is more chiding and smug than it is carefree.
