      Pretentious, lazy, derivative, meaningless.
I’d bet everyone who does this has watched the same tutorial video on youtube.
Sure, you can just say "it’s an artstyle! It’s a style choice!" but when it’s someone else’s style and someone else who made the choices, AND it looks like dogshit to begin with anyway… I don’t feel like I’m being unreasonable when I say this needs to die and stay dead. Too old to look good, too new to be charming, it will only ever be enjoyed by a small pocket of blind nostalgiafags.

hardware limitations give rise to commonality between games, no different than all watercolor paintings sharing some similarities. No AA, low wobbly polygon count, dithering everywhere.

it’s great but in danger of being a gimmick. it needs to serve the story and gameplay and the actual artistry of the game and not just "oooo ps1 retro" bc then it’ll turn into a gimmick like pixel art has. i’m really into it too but it’s probably on the way there

Would be cool, but from the few games I’ve seen that try and use it, something just feels off about them compared to actual PS1 games. Couldn’t tell you what it is for sure, though.

It’s that the vast majority of it wouldn’t actually be possible on a real PS1

      • #456968

        Guest

often one of the things that can get miss is the ps1’s imprecise, uh, i dunno they’re are articles on it
but the way it renders polygons how it stores floating points or some shit, it’s not very accurate, so you get the strange effect (more noticeable emulating) of the polygons shifting as you move the camera, see the seams between them open and close.
to achieve a good quality ps1 aesthetic you need to do put more work into it more than use shitty low res models and a pixelated filter calling it a day.

What I truly covet is 32 bit era sprite art.
The more of this there is in the world the better it will be.
I also really like the mixture of hand-drawn-looking sprites with simple polygons

        Guest

A lot of that look isn’t actually polygons, its just really really clever use of sprites and math to warp them.
        https://youtu.be/Z0S92Fs5gOg

The guys who did this must have been real smart. Simple operations yet it looks better than 90% of the pixelshit I’ve played in the last 10 years.

So long as it’s just the texture and polygons while still having everything else modern graphics have. No need to have the ugly empty areas that were common in that era or shitty animations for instance.

Look at Quake Dimension of the Machine for a good example of how to do that era’s aesthetics while still taking advantage of what more powerful machines can provide. No need to be lazy for the sake of authenticity.

I really like that low-poly has been en vogue the past few years. Even some games that don’t fully use it have blended it into their aesthetic (Deep Rock Galactic and Outer Wilds, for example) and it works extremely well. Textures and models can be vivid enough to express unusual designs without requiring extreme amounts of detail on texturework, a process that can often be cost-prohibitive. It additionally allows focus on quality lighting and particles, which tend to be far more important in making a game look visually appealing. For an unrelated but recent example of that see Metroid Dread, a game with mediocre models but gorgeous lighting work.

The low-poly ability to exclude unnecessary detail without being jarring is why low budget horror games are the forefront of this movement – that exact factor of "leaving it to the imagination" is a huge boon to horror games, and one reason a lot of people praise Silent Hill is because it’s really fucking good at doing that.

Also a good point. Low-poly models can work extremely well with raytracing, levels filled with enemies, etc. Ultrakill is a great example of that.

I totally agree but at the same time I don’t think high-fidelity is inherently soulless, just that the only studios able to afford them make soulless games.
In my head there’s a perfect version of the Demon’s Souls Remake that includes the fidelity of Bluepoint’s with the vision of From’s. I think it’s possible.

I’ve played through the entirety of Cruelty Squad but my eyes were not hurt even once because everything is clean and exact.
Played Dread Delusion and had to quit after ten minutes because this shit is more taxing than the fucking government.
I’d rather have late 90’s PC graphics or just plain shitty graphics like Brigand:Oaxaca than this imitation.

You can fix that with PGXP

That just introduces more problems. If you don’t like the way 25 year old video games look, then don’t play 25 year old video games.

Stupid. Can’t wait til every single game on steam is tagged "low poly". Fuck this clown world. PS1 games looked good on a CRT. That "aesthetic" looks like complete and utter dog shit on a modern display (just like low res 2d artwork), yet we’re about to be inundated with the shit all over again because people who are nostalgic about it are coming of age where they can start making their own homages to it. Just like what happened with pixelshit for the last 15 years.

A bunch of people either wanting to make an easy buck or to go for the lowest effort possible while using the “aesthetic” excuse.
Horror is the genre where you see it the most because it traditionally attracts money hungry indie devs and makes it easy to pass laziness as an “aesthetic choice” inspired by games such as Silent Hill.
Like with pixel art, it won’t be hard to differentiate games motivated by the previously stated reasons from what was made out of passion and love for the style.

As long as it looks good, I don’t care, and just because something looks old, doesn’t necessarily mean it looks bad. In any case, gameplay > all. Pandering so hard to graphicsjerking normalfags (while neglecting allocating resources to making your game actually fucking fun) is part of the reason why gaming is so fucking shit these days.

Trash. They never do it right.
Every single one fails to compress textures and audio properly, don’t use rendering techniques from those times, and generally just put no effort into the flaws that made low-poly games endearing.

They just make low-poly assets with low res textures, throw on some filters / use some Unity plugin to reduce polygonal rendering accuracy, and that’s it. Shadows and lighting are still modern, audio is still 48KHz with full sub, draw distances are still extensive, zero framedrops in densely populated areas, character movements are fluid, the list goes on.

All these games do is wear the skins of venerable old titles to cover for their complete lack of substance and originality.

A renaissance of gaming, brought to not by the imperial corporations, but by the village gamers. Sheds light on one of the top hay days of the media, and focuses more on substance than style, unlike a wide variety of games nowadays.

It is Simulacrum. The game has been in development for like half a decade. Devs have it only as a hobby. I guess it may take them another 5 years to actually release it. But the first chapter is out (no combat yet as it is supposed to be introduced in chapter 2).

Your image is the best example of it I’ve seen. The problem is that the aesthetic is hard to do for resolutions other than 240p or for big displays, it will just look off. However you image manages to do this well by adding more details.

Do any of these games have the scale of actual PSX games? Cool, your game looks like Syphon Filter, but how much actual gameplay is there?

None of them are even close. PSX games were made by professional teams. Indie games are made by socially inept losers in their bedrooms.

Shenmue HD? I’m not sure that’s exactly the best example here. But I do agree that it does fit the timeframe.

How do Ganker feels about low poly but actual modern PBR textures and render engines?

PBR doesn’t work without enough resolution to my knowledge, the shading model breaks down and you’ll get posterization with the lighting over the material. Not sure if you can even do some sort of dithering to help out there but the other point is that it kind of precludes an unreasonable kind of tradeoff with texture quality and lighting balance no sane game back then or now would make. Kinda makes it a hard sell to me.
