I used to rank fate dead last but I’ve grown to appreciate it over time. UBW was a retread with the only redeeming factor being the redman. HF peaks very high but is bogged down by the worm, a shitty message, and the true ending sucked ass. Fate is really as simple as it gets and has one of the best character dynamics in the vn, being saber and shirou. There’s also shit like the basement and bridge scene which is up there with the highs in HF.

Fate slots in well with Zero and the overall narrative of the series. Saber vs. Gilgamesh and Shirou vs. Kotomine seems like a natural progression to the narrative as we know it now (I’m aware Zero didn’t exist at the time the VN was written and at the time I’d probably have ranked Fate lower). Heaven’s Feel fulfills this role too- but it doesn’t really work in isolation as things like ‘Saber being evil this time’ really only have meaning if contextualised by the other routes.
Unlimited Blade Works is defined by having a lot of cool stuff going on but the plot is a bit strange if scrutinised. -

I’ve always considered myself more of a rinfag, but after rereading the vn it was kind of a shock for me when I realized how good the relationship between shirou and saber is on the second read; just two broken people helping each other become whole.
I think Nasu’s shitty takes might have influenced me a bit. Like him, I still prefer the more down to earth aspect of shirou and rin, but I also think Nasu is too hard on shirou and saber when he calls their relationship "unrealistic."-

He must have a very one dimensional look of what a girl is like, because I didn’t get that vibe at all. I just assumed she was more stoic than a typical girl (even before being made king), but was still very much a girl.
I always thought she was expertly written too, since it’s not like a girl from medieval times is going to have a ton of overtly female hobbies, interests, and mannerisms, but the more I learn about the author’s thoughts, the more I think the vn ending up as good as it did was because of a series of lucky accidents.Kind of like how Shirou was apparently written to be a self insert, but isn’t a self insert by any means, even if you use the loose definition.

I mostly agree, but I also wonder if Nasu’s also being a bit humble compared to his real thoughts. Either way I think it’s coming from a more typical or commonplace perspective on what a boy meets girl story would look like, which like Uro says being different from that is what makes it interesting.

Extra was the beginning of the end for Fate as a fun, niche, self-contained modern fantasy setting. So much hollow scale bloat and lazy concept recycling all in one project.
