You are also wrong about it being about isolation, Ulfric’s goal is to free Skyrim from the Empire’s rules, particularly the treaty so they can take the fight to the Dominion as soon as possible just like the Redguards.

Both the Stormcloaks and Imperials are more or less correct in different moral contexts.
The Stormcloaks are a bad example of a reactionary group. One that sees misdeeds and misfortune and responds to it with an immediate justice. There’s nothing wrong with this per se but if the group in question is misguided or does not see the whole picture, then it can get in the way of another morally correct group.
The Imperials on the other hand need the forces of Tamriel to work together if they are to take on the Altmer. Should the altmer win, all of life can be considered forfeit which is not only bad, it is as bad as it could possibly be for Imperials and Nords alike. Part of preparing for the inevitable war comes with committing to temporary smaller misdeeds. They are doing what must be done for the world to not get sacrificed and to face it with sword and shield as the nords would love when the time comes.
Altmer also have a strong case as it DID take the united forces of Cyrodil and beyond to even hold them back.Also, my cat sat on my keyboard and now I can’t press the same key more than once without it not registering having pressed it. I first chose Empire because my character is a thief and the empire provides way more opportunities to steal.
My Stormcloak character was some batshit crazy wizard that has a vendetta against the Empire for reasons and just sided with the Stormcloaks to attack the empire more. -
Ulfric was totally in the right in his rebellion right up until he killed the High King. It was basically that moment that ensured the entirety of Skyrim would not side with him, even though they all pretty much agreed with his sentiment, except the really uppity nobles in Solitude and Whiterun. Had he not done what he did, he definitely would have gotten Hjalmarch, The Reach and Falkreath to also side with him easily. Then, it would just be a matter of convincing Balgruuf that it’s in Skyrim’s best interest to seceede. At that point Haafingar wouldn’t really have much of a choice, and there still would likely be not a single drop of Nord blood spilt yet, and Skyrim would be at full strength when the Empire invades them.
