GuestI know everyone posts the "Do you have to play the game to be a fan of it" Twitter screencap a lot, but as an adult, I have very little time to dedicate my full energy into consuming a game and there are much more important things that take priority. There are series where I’m interested in the story but the games are 40 hours long and I’m too busy with work and other stuff, so I’ll just put on a No Commentary playthrough in a pop-up window on while I’m working on stuff on my computer. This is how I did it for the Drakengard, Nier, Yakuza, and Persona series. I see the artistic merits of the stories of these games, but I don’t have the patience to subject myself to hours of repetitive and grindy gameplay just so I can advance to the next part of the story. Granted, I haven’t sworn off gaming completely. If the game is about or less than 10 hours long on HLTB, I’ll play it in one-hour spurts over a week or so. This is usually reserved for visual novel-style games or puzzle games like Ghost Trick or 999 where you can make a lot of advancement within an hour and not be subject to fighting the same enemies over-and-over again in between cutscenes.

books don’t belong in this comparison. All improved, so not enjoying old ones unless you’re nostalgic makes some sense. nes platformers and shmups aged badly.
I enjoy classical music and older films but I prefer mostly new stuff, for whatever reasons.-

It’s fine if you don’t want to bother, but nothing is stopping you.Genres got refined over time, but that isn’t always a good thing. Survival horror games are really just shitty action games, that failed to accomplish what their designers hoped to make, but they still have their fans, because the difficulty makes them more interesting.

GuestThis, emulators can’t fake half pixel shading. A CRT is the only way to see this as it was meant to be.
Either that or mods and upscaling and texture replacements. Or a whole HD remake/remaster. Without some work, upscaling alone or original res alone are both messed up.

autismlmao casual trannies. You get a different experience in some games by using states. In RE the save system involves a correct assestment of risk/reward. Savescumming takes out one big factor of the game. Its a different game if you are not subject to that risk and decision taking of when and where to save.

GuestYeah, but starting with PS2. In my experience PS1 games should be played in original resolution because of the extremely low quality of the assets. It looks coherent, grimy and right that way.
-
January 5, 2021 at 7:49 pm #51136

GuestMy approach is using 2x internal resolution specifically for 5th gen games. I find 240p to impede on readability, but I also find 960p and above to clash with low-res assets, so 480p is the right balance.

PS2:x4 res + shader for boosting luminance
Dreamcast/wii/gc/wiiu : x4 res

GuestSo I’m replaying Parasite eve for the first time in over 20 years since I last played it, only because recently I found out there is a secret ending at the top of the Chrysler building that I never finished.
To play it, I’m using epsx and setting up the resolution to 1080 and forcing sharper textures. The game does look a lot better than it initially did. Eva doesn’t look like her face melted anymore like it did in my old RCA wood panel TV from 1983.

In this instance, both have merit, it’s neat to see things clearly, the models and the textures, it’s a fresh perspective to those of us who actually played the games on the original hardware. Meanwhile, the game was intended to be viewed a certain way, and changing that can have an impact on the user experience. The only thing I can say is this: nostalgia is personal, and cannot be shared or given.

The word you use to refer to an older game has no bearing on whether you like it or not (although "classic" is more fitting). This is probably the most retarded opinion I’ve heard all week.

We can argue about the use of the word retro all day, I could care less, it had almost nothing to do with my point. My point is that just because you categorize something as "retro", it doesn’t mean you like to pretend you like things you don’t and thats a huge retarded leap and you’re unbelievably stupid to think that.

GuestUpscaled looks weird to me. I’ll play PS1 games in native res but with dithering/color banding disabled. PGXP can be okay too. I usually don’t care that much about widescreen or not and am fine with playing something in 4:3 if it doesn’t natively support 16:9, forcing 16:9 usually causes problems in my experience. And no filters, they also seem to cause occasional graphical issues and I don’t think scanlines are a good thing.
