When does MGS3 get really good? I lost my save after fighting The Pain. Ocelot was amusing, but Pain felt like nothing. I’m wasn’t particularly interested in Eva or the other characters. Is it worth downloading a save somewhere?

Dunno, I never could enjoy MG3 as MG1 or 2 (ship part, all after Raiden was bad). MG4 has some moments but it was the worst of the saga and MG5 wasn’t very fun game.

Muv-luv is far from my favorite VN but I have to give it props for sustaining such an immense length while also retaining a severe amount of emotional impact that still holds up (though plenty of material nowadays copy elements of it)
I can’t decide if I hate YT for being up his own ass for all of his games or if I genuinely like them. I do adore the music but I feel like Taro relies on the same "fakeout gotcha now aren’t you sad?" bullshit too often, and at least NA and N (NR) rely on replaying huuuuuge chunks of the game repeatedly just to progress the story which I hated.
I might have been too quick to dump on FFVI in retrospect, it’s got a very broad and evenly developed cast with a villain infinitely more compelling than Squeenix’s favorite sephiroth. It does have the best final 10% of any FF game ever made forever, and best final boss fight
FoNV is a bit strange because some of the self-contained kernels of storyline and plot you get in islands are well developed but others suffer greatly. It’s still unfathomably better than all the other sandboxy open world type games listed and wipes its ass with Fo4 and Obsidian’s more contemporary Outer Worlds
Unrelated: Outer Wilds (different game) should make the list in that the plot is pieced together uniquely and has a gut-wrenching finale, making one of the best overall games ever.
There are zero VisualArtsKey VNs or Fata Morgana in this list so it’s automatically wrong twice over.

Anyone else really struggle with ranking things? I really liked MGS4’s story, but I recognize that’s because of the author’s quirks I enjoy and pure emotional resonance it gave me.

I also realise some things mean more to me because of a connection like you said. I could give you a top 10 list of my favourite games, movies, genre of music etc but asking me to rank them in order of superiority would have me there for hours and I always feel like I’d need to explain them.Maybe it’s the ’tism, maybe it’s just the nature of the mediums.
