GuestThe Mass Effect series was basically this though. The anticipation and hype for Mass Effect 3 was through the roof because previous fans wanted to see where the story went and how it ended, and that’s why the game was so disappointing.
The thing is, nothing was able to recapture that magic in an episodic manner as the ME trilogy did, and Telltale/Life is Strange games are fairly niche. Even movie games don’t get the same treatment as big television shows.

GuestGame of Thrones’ biggest problem is that all the actual merit of the story came from the books. And they ran out of them.

GuestI thought it was heading somewhere decent what with him being the mummers(fake and or Varys) dragon.
But i was more pissed they removed lady stoneheart and a myriad other small but interesting plot points.
Once that happened i heavily suspected the show was going to shit. I was right but it still didnt feel good

GuestI was bitching about too many changes from the books by the start of season 2. They had plenty more character material to work with, they just skipped over or rewrote a lot of it.
But even then I don’t know if there’d be enough content to carry things to A Dream of Spring. I don’t know if any of us will reach it.

GuestWe’ve been told that Reverie was the halfway point, so there IS an end-goal. I dunno how broad-strokes the story planning is, but given how many awkward moments of retconning there seem to be it’s not thoroughly planned out, and it’s probably they more have a vague ideas for the in-between parts and the general idea of the finale planned.

GuestMan, I was excited for Telltale’s take on Game of Thrones. I was hoping they’d do what they did with season one of Walking Dead, using the popularity of the TV show as a springboard, but making something more in-line with the books while focusing on their own original characters.
But every character just felt like a diet Stark, and it’s clear that time and money was spread super thin the second they decided to have multiple POV characters each with their own setting and story.

Guestone telltale game that went from mediocre to fucking amazing was the batman game. season 1 was bland as fuck, and usually telltales track record is to make a good first season and then fuck it all up the second season, but no, batman season 2 was a huge improvement and i really liked their take on the joker. shame it’s super dead, although i suppose we’ll still be getting TWAU2, but i suspect thats just gonna be vaporware.

Guest>Also, pretty much all fantasy universes are derivative of Tolkien to some degree.
I’m so sick of this shit. Tolkien "ripped off" folklore and other stories. Ever heard of Der Ring des Nibelungen? It’s a Wagner opera that revolves around a ring with the power to rule everything. Sound familiar? It predates Lord of the Rings by about 100 years. They’re not all ripping off Tolkien. They’re ripping off European folklore. It’s no different from the Japs who also borrow very heavily from Asian folklore for all their shit. But apparently it’s only bad when westerners do it.-

GuestThere’s superficial resemblance to the LOTR films. That’s it. Almost nothing of substance in TES was taken from LOTR. LOTR did not invent elves and dwarves and even if it did the ones in TES are very different to the ones in LOTR.

GuestWhen people say Oblivion is ripping off Lord of the Rings, they are not saying that it is literally using a Tolkien-esque setting, they’re saying that Oblivion deliberately apes the then-recent Lord of the Rings films on an aesthetic and atmospheric level.
You do not hear anything about Skyrim ripping off Lord of the Rings, for instance, despite the fact that it quite clearly is aping bits of the A Song of Ice and Fire books (not series).

Dream ended before it got to the good part

>gameplay is about gathering mats to create a new ring of power to give to capture targets
>write stories for Teacher,Principal, Students,Cops, and Friends

Guestbecause it’s more expensive than ever to make a big movie/game/TV show/etc and the studios/devs want to make money, so they just copy shit that has been successful before and try to use big names from popular games. They want to make money, they don’t care whether the game is good or original or anything like that, as long as it makes money.

GuestI love games with long, branching narratives. There haven’t been many in recent memory. Telltale is dead and there aren’t many other AAA developers who are willing to sink development time into content only a percentage of their players will see.
Pathfinder has been the most fun narrative adventure I’ve played in recent memory and it’s only like that because mechanics are intertwined with the roleplay.

GuestI think most modern devs feel that there’s too much risk in banking on a new game being successful enough to guarantee an entire series. So apart from a few plot hooks that may or may not lead to potential sequels, they try to tell fairly conclusive standalone stories.
It’s painful having old classics that ended on cliffhangers that were never followed up on. Or even worse, they are followed up a decade or so later, and it’s a mess.

GuestBecause it’s actually really fucking hard to write that much material if you seriously including branching paths that just radically differed from each other. Instead of basically writing one story with some changing variables, you’re writing over a dozen you then have to animate/voice/make sense of.
That’s why decisions in games like TWD/ME aren’t really all that important and the game ends pretty much the same no matter what you do.

GuestI think people were a least expecting to be able to beat back the reapers with a golden ending through all the work you put into it in the past two games. The games do set up this expectation, there’s two key differences in this cycle that are established: 1, their ability to instantly teleport in and cut off the head of organized leadership in the galaxy at the citadel in a surprise attack stops working and everyone knows they’re coming and have time to prepare. And 2, a lot of the narrative focuses on how the sentient species of the current cycle are much more cooperative and diverse this time around instead of there being one dominant species that can be focused on to bring down the rest. Instead the reapers are still essentially unbeatable without a space MacGuffin to do all the work for you and all of that shit you did before was mostly pointless and only contributed to a point total that only very slightly changes the ending

GuestThe standards are so low in games because most of these people only play games and don’t watch films (other than Hollywood blockbuster crap) or read so they have no sense of perspective. They learned they can just write any old shit and smother it in graphical fidelity with an "epic score!" and people will love it. Games are assessed on visuals and audio primarily.

GuestIt’s just a different flavor on the same meat and potatoes. Every game gets updates, but you are not playing for the updates itself, it’s the base game which gets those updates that matters.

GuestNope. The more narrative there is the less gameplay there is.

GuestNo they can coexist just fine, no one says story in movies gets in the way of cinematography

GuestThey can coexist, but that doesn’t change the fact that narrative takes away from gameplay, even when there is very little narrative.

GuestIt’s right by the simple fact that narrative either distracts or gatekeeps you from gameplay, therefore resulting in less gameplay. A cutscene literally bans you from gameplay for a period of time.

Guest>Why are there no successful long running game series with a developing plot and a fandom filled with theories where it might go
Because it’s not a very commercially friendly model for video games. A successful video game franchise tends to have as many points of entry as possible, which makes attracting younger generations of players easier and more sustainable. When you have a long-running plot, you force players to start from the beginning, invest possibly hundreds of hours into a series, and hope that your series can remain relevant across multiple generations of consumers. This leads to promise like said series possibly changing creative direction over time to accommodate changing tastes and market demographics, which may piss off old fans, cause bickering within the fandom, and stifle the series’ growth and success. -

GuestNow that i think about it most game series never have an ending, they just get robooted and retconned forever. Did the original Tomb Raider ever have an ending.

Guestthat was suppose to be xenosaga. it was originally going to be a saga, hence the name, of around 6 or maybe more games culminating into a finale. after the first one they put the kibosh on the thing and monolith had to wrap things up in 3 games.
