GuestHave you considered that most pirates are probably high school kids or university students that don’t have that much disposable income?
I was basically the "I’ll buy it later" guy thru all of my university years and I did eventually bought most games that I pirated and liked.
Now that I have actual disposable income I rarely pirate anything, even fucking movies I just end up renting on streaming services if they’re available, but I still think there is a valid argument and space for piracy to exist.

GuestIf someone said to me that a company was losing money because I pirated a game from them, that person is making the assumption that I would have bought the game had I not pirated it, which is true in some cases, but not most of them.
Always counter with this, and also ask them, "Is the company losing money if I buy the game used?"-

Guest>ask them, "Is the company losing money if I buy the game used?"
I was kicked from a manga discord last week for "hating publishers" and "promoting scanlations". I simply said "I buy used to save money" and some faggot said "that’s stealing because publishers don’t get money from used sales. it’s piracy".
Do discordfags really?

GuestPiracy isn’t theft, but it IS loss of revenue.
Remember, it’s not just a bunch of individuals downloading a thing, it’s an ecosystem. The majority of people who pirate are people who want to play the game in the first place – of them, those that would’ve paid for it anyway are loss of revenue, but those who wouldn’t have and had no intention to aren’t. Pirating and deleting a game, including repeatedly, doesn’t show intent to buy the game, and only results in one copy – even if you don’t delete, and download it nine times to various parts of your PC, you’re still an individual player, so the most revenue that could be lost is one lot in the case of an intent to buy the game being replaced by this activity, if that intent existed in the first place or came about through the process. And those people who claim to pirate games, and then buy them afterwards if they like them, are few and far between in reality.
Further to that, though, piracy rates are tracked by various sources, and though the companies involved may not be losing revenue on every download, they could still see those numbers and have them influence their future development/release decisions. In addition, there’s the subject of preowned games, which take the revenue out of the pool too if the game is currently being sold, and is definitely still preferable in at least some instances. If a game isn’t being sold anymore, it is out of the ecosystem unless it gets reintroduced, say, through a port – if it’s not in that ecosystem, there’s no loss to the developers/publishers that could be argued, but if it gets reintroduced, it represents the same sort of loss as first-release piracy. Subscription services are more complex, but otherwise bear a lot of similarities to fresh individual releases.
tl;dr – it doesn’t work because they either didn’t intend to buy it or, if they did, they could only represent a singular unit. -

GuestLately there has been a phenomena where a person who pirates a game gets to play the game a day earlier than someone who bought it. I have literally refunded a game (sekiro) and pirated it when this happens. Its unreal that devs let this happen and I won’t give them money.

GuestReminder:
EU issued a study on piracy
Piracy does not do any economical damage, the only exception being blockbuster movies currently playing on theaters where the loss is estimated 4.4%
In the case of videogames, the data actually suggests piracy helps sales
>"With the exception of recently released blockbusters, there is no evidence to support the idea that online copyright infringement displaces sales,"
Naturally, the study was withheld as it didn’t produce the wanted results, that is evidence for publishing companies and massive corporations like Disney to use as a tool to push back copyright laws even further
https://www.engadget.com/2017-09-22-eu-suppressed-study-piracy-no-sales-impact.html

GuestIt may not be physical theft, but I still don’t feel like I’m doing the right thing, especially since it’s all entertainment media and none of it really matters.
Christ can forgive a man who steals bread to feed his starving child, but what compassion would be afforded to me when I try to explain the case for game piracy to St. Peter at the gates of Heaven?Nah that was blood bro.

GuestI don’t think Jesus would be overly critical over someone who downloaded some 1’s and 0’s. As long as it wasn’t satanic, overly violent or pornographic, and as long as you still tried following the laws (like not stealing physical goods) I really do believe the lord and his son would be forgiving of any transgression.

It’s about licences not the software.
Why do you think Adobe and Microsoft push so hard for companies to but licenses for their dogshit software? Because that’s where the money is… Some fat autist hiding in his room downloading a pirated copy isn’t really costing them anything because you were never going to buy it in the first place.. would cost them more money to pursue you than they would get out of you. -
