see the broken tube earlier in the game, retard.

How was I supposed to know I should let this enemy alive so it would break the sand wall if there wasn’t anything like that before in the game? The enemy is right in front of the player as soon as he enters the room, it doesn’t make sense not to shoot and wait like 10 seconds to see what it is going to do. I don’t think the tube is a problem since you have those plataforms that make it obvious that you would go up or down there sometime, but I did get stuck in the sand wall and had to look it up. I didn’t even think of not killing the enemy.

You kind of have a point, but I never had to do anything with enemies besides killing them, the game should have made it somewhat clear that they destroyed sand blocks. The enemy is right in front of the player when he walks in and kinda far away from the blocks, its not that intuitive. I honestly thought I needed an upgrade to go through the sand.

              >I never had to do anything with enemies besides killing them

You have to freeze some enemies to use as platforms. Others can be hooked onto with the grapple beam. Then there’s the fireflies which you go out of your way *not* to kill because if you kill too many of them the room goes pitch black.

Dread’s was a little more obvious because the tube was already under some obvious distress. Super Metroid is the greatest game ever made, but I’ll admit that it’s not perfect and this is one reason why.

            >Run/Jump
            >Jump/Gun
You can’t have the ease of adjacent buttons for all 3, one of them has to be awkwardly on the other side of the controller and is a pain to configure.

On the bright side there’s a handy pit for you to have a nice day in after you beat Kraid, if you’re okay grinding your health back. The fact that you don’t start with full health upon game load is the single glaring flaw of Metroid 1 that makes it hard to play (there are other flaws but they’re ones I can accept).

The 30 HP on death literally only means grinding, and if you die to MB then prepare to cry.

I watched some blind lets plays and pretty much everyone figures it out. The most important part is that there’s a one-way exit from Maridia that dumps you out right beside this tube. The only other way back into Maridia is the opposite side of the whole map. Most people start spamming every attack they have out of desperation and it ends up working.

Also, they show you how to break it in the demo gameplay that plays automatically if you don’t press anything on the title screen.

      • #406908
        Anonymous
        Guest

To be fair, the fact that they literally show it to you on the demo tells you that they know they fucked up. It should have had some enemies running around, or they should have placed the other broken tube that’s somewhere else right next to it so it’s more clear what you have to do.

What is the best SNES emulator nowadays to play this? Still snes9x?

      • #406950

        Guest

Bsnes is more accurate. It also allows you to set 1 frame of run-ahead which nullifies the innate input-lag SNES games have. (Although some games need 2 frames)

        BSNES > Snes9x >>>>> ZSNES

Snes9x is capable and its inaccuracies will not matter to you as a player (especially if you’re only playing officially licensed games) but they do matter if you’re developing/modding on the platform, while BSNES is cycle accurate and has a number of unimportant but neat "waow!" features like widescreen patches, CD audio patches and HD Mode 7. The only downside to BSNES is it has relatively high spec requirements (for such a simple emulator) meaning it’s not the best choice for toasters. If you have a decent computer there’s no reason not to use it.

Never use ZSNES. If you want to play a really old ROMhack that doesn’t work in modern emulators due to bad audio programming there’s an option in bsnes that intentinoally mimics the ZSNES audio inaccuracies (go to Compatibility and click "Echo shadow RAM"). If you just really love ZSNES’s GUI for nostalgic reasons there’s even a fork called ZMZ which adds ZSNES’s UI to either Snes9x or BSNES, snow and all. Do not use ZSNES.

They could’ve at least had some sort of indicator that more powerful explosives would work. Like have the tube or screen shake a bit when using explosives and have it get stronger as you use stronger stuff. I think pretty much everyone immediately thinks to blow it up, but speaking personally from when I played this as a kid, I mostly wrote it off and thought the game just couldn’t handle that kind of thing when super missiles garnered no reaction, consequentially assuming the platform above was just a tease and you could drop down here later as a callback/connected-world kind of thing. I thought to try it when I wandered back, but that was only when I was just fucking around the entire map as a whole.

melanoid that doesnt stop the block being BS, they give you a scope to find hidden blocks, then make it not work here. Thats like a zelda game with cracked walls to bomb, but then the odd NON-cracked wall. You wont bomb the wall because youre taught that bombable walls have cracks. Thats BS design.
If you dont know a secret is there, you dont know youre missing a secret, if your secret finding scope says "nope, none here" then its absolutely not your fault for moving on.

What are you talking about? Kraid does not give you health back as you are fighting him, and if you want to keep that health you have to make your way back up as shown in that pic someone conveniently posted. If you die there you’re back at 30 with 0 tanks. This doesn’t count any Ridley or Mother Brain deaths.

Yeah. Super Metroid is always the final game played at GDQ and Kill The Animals v. Save The Animals is a giant vote where the side that gives the most money during the entire competition wins and the runner does that. I stopped watching GDQ after they started heavily policing chat so you can’t even make fun of how shitty it’s gotten but I remember every year without fail there would be a ton of four-digit "anonymous donations" right at the end to balloon the pool and make sure every year has a larger total than the previous.

Lol zoom zoom faggots couldn’t even beat Metroid 1, which is among the easier NES games.
Makes sense these same people cry about Super Metroid, the easiest Metroid game, and maybe one of the easiest in the genre.

Personally when I get into a franchise I like to start at the beginning and see how the franchise evolved over time, even if it means dealing with inconveniences from early gaming.
That being said, you can also replace 1 and 2 for Zero Mission and Samus Returns or AM2R for the non-official version.
And yeah, Dread is going to be the most beginner friendly.

That’s Zero Mission. Easiest game of the series, smaller map, less abilities, chozo statue handholding.

super. if you start with a gba one you’ll want its controls and wall/bomb jump physics. dread’s pretty hard honestly, at least the bosses. but they do have checkpoints before them and you can counter certain attacks to wail on em so it evens out.

Dread is super beginner friendly. The EMMI are confined to small zones. The game does a pretty good job of rail roading you with obvious paths. Like, get ability, go to door that needs ability, next closest door needs that ability leads to next area design. Very, very hard to get lost.

But it still offers old school metroid exploration and sequence breaking. Its rail roaded, but unlike fusion you are free to hop off the rails almost any time and go elsewhere, if you find the secret paths.

Plus it plays and controls the best by far.

Amazing how many people here are just shilling for bad game design that was made for the sole purpose of selling guides and increasing word of mouth marketing.

That and, the blatant "I watched a top 10 things you didnt know about [game] and I now regurgitate them online as if I, of course, always knew they existed"

Metroid isnt always BS with its design, but no one can excuse the block that the scope cant reveal as not being terrible design. Also I hardly call "shoot, bomb, missile and super bomb every block of every room" engaging gameplay either. Not BS, but not exactly fun. Hiding an E tank in the ceiling 3 blocks from the wall, requiring a specific ability to even uncover is just cancer gameplay and makes my eyes roll every time I see it. Its like Zelda 1 design. Bomb every wall just in case. Grind bombs. Repeat… or buy the guide goy. I like having to figure out my own shit with no help, I like intuitive design and secrets, but old Metroid isnt that. Its just trial and error blasting.

To anyone who has beaten Dread there was one hint throughout the game to something that happens right at the end. Samus’ ship AI still called her Lady, but when interacting with the computers throughout the game it always just called her Samus.
