        Borderlands 3 begs to differ.
So does Metroid Other M and a thousand other titles.
Most people underestimate how important is the context of doing a certain action in how much fun it is to do.
Even games that prides themselves for not having a story, like Doom, still bother to inform you that you are a badass space marines fighting the demon of hells.
Remove that premise and everything cool about it and leave only the gameplay intact and you get Super Noah's Ark.

I'm gonna have to disagree that the story was bad. It suffered from the same thing Souls games do where it's obsfucated, but the story itself is fairly solid with decent lore behind it.
        >You're tasked with escorting a princess to another kingdom as a peace offering
        >The Nameless God targets these ships to get the princess
        >In reality the Princess is a slave disguised as a princess as a sacrifice to the nameless god
        >The Nameless God takes bits and pieces of people's memories of horrible areas in reality and recreates them together on the island as a way to make the place even more hostile so anyone who's there prays for their god, who the Nameless God is masquerading as

This is all written out in the level up screen, items, and the environments. But it took me like 3-4 runs of the game to really start to figure everything out. I didn't even realize the Princess was a slave until I did the thief's questline on my second playthrough.

Wrong. Game design inherently carries aesthetic and philosophical ideals. The most convincing way of conveying your message to the player is to design gameplay where that message is acted out. Gameplay lets the player express themselves and then it formulates responses to that. Gameplay is all about human connection. You will stop being a moviegame brainlet when you realize this.

          These are the same thing.
          >playing a game is a skill and skills require 0 emotions to be mastered.
Being "skilled" at a game is inherently a parameter set by the developers. The fact that a game prioritizes skill in the first place means the designers have chosen to idealize the concept of skill. Not every game does this. It stands to reason that people who care about their skill in games at least appreciate skillfulness in other areas of life. Also, the fact that gameplay is an open conversation means there is rarely one single way of getting "skilled" at a game. See Melee and how Hungrybox is the best Jigglypuff player while Mang0 is the best Fox player. Those two character choices (and the way both of these players fundamentally approach the game) are inherently personal - there was never any rational or calculated reason for them. They chose two separate ways of expressing themselves, and the game design validated both.

      >Dread Delusion
I have picked DD and while i don't regret it, holy shit it can use some actual gameplay and actual RPG variativity. I get that combat was not their main focus, but the skills are just four ways to open four kinds of open doors (strength is useless, charisma is required to for good quest outcomes, and lore is required for being able to do some quests at all), and quest design is "read the dialog-run here for an item-run there for a different item-run back - pick an ending from another dialog". Artstyle still carries the game, but barely.

First one. Gameplay is highly standardized lately, especially in the controls department, and very streamlined (by which i mean, the common annoyances are all but figured out and avoided). Engines are much more standardized now, which means very similar movement for the games where it matters. So, these days, "best in the genre" doesn't differ that much from "ok".
For example, there are several indie shooters with fast gameplay and cyberpunk theme, they even have names like each other - Turbo Overkill, Ultrakill, and Ghostrunner (i think there are two of them). I have Ghostrunner ant Turbo Overkill free from some giveaways or bundles. The general consensus is that Ultrakill has the best gameplay. But i won't buy it unless i'd want to play specifically it because i already have two games with similar gameplay and similar artstyle, and the quirks that make Ultrakill best aren't worth the asking price IMO.

Of course, for players, who can't enjoy art, first type will contain no posituve sides at all, but this players are not people, but soulless NPCs and, therefore, should be moved exclusively into competitive and/or sport games within their own niche, so they would not affect main videogame medium through allowing to uglify and blandify newly created games in favor of another PUBG, Call of Duty or whichever latest thing they are currently being fed.

But Undertale has shit gameplay and story

plus the fact, that Undertale does not have shit art, it is quite decent. Not over the top, style limits it somewhat, but still pretty good. And music were half-taken from Homestuck by the hands of the composer for the very same Homestuck.

The art doesn't need to be "good", it just needs to stand out, which Undertale's art does. Unity asset store shit is technically "good" but it's not indicative of a good game.

The first choice that looks better will sell more and it's all that matters. No matter how godlike your gameplay is, word of mouth will at most cause people to buy your game on sale instead of impulse buying it at full price like with the game which has better art.

Is Symphony of the Night a movie game? Silent hill? Heroes of Might and Magic? Kyrandia?

    the first one.
I've heard people tell me Dwarf Fortress is the best civ sim ever, but the game (original) looks so awful with that pseudo-ASCII garbage that I couldn't stomach spending that long learning how to play. Been there done that with ADOM.

There IS such a thing as too prohibitive of music, graphics, story, and writing. Games are a culmination of many traits, not just gameplay loops.

The one with better gameplay. Pic related is an example of art taking preference over gameplay
