Does anyone actually hate games BECAUSE they're popular?
I hate some popular games' fanbases for being cancerous, and I hate some popular games because I don't like the things that make them popular, but those are all incidental.

To answer your question though, Thief.

Look at any undertale thread on Ganker and you'll see very plainly that people straight hate it because it's popular and they dislike the fanbase

      Anonymous

Well I can understand not wanting to play a game that's superpopular because that popularity might make it feel 'cheap' or uninteresting for some people. I don't think I agree, but I feel that.
I also understand wanting to keep affection for a popular thing on the down-low to not seem like you're just some trendy guy. That's mostly just not wanting to misrepresent yourself, or insecurity. Depending on who you are.
And I get disliking something which is absolutely everywhere. It does get annoying to see people talking about the same thing all the time when you don't understand it.

But outright hating something, that I do not understand. It seems like the person 'hating' a popular thing is either trolling or just trying to get attention and seem different.

People definitely do, I admittedly went through a period myself when I was young where I would pretty much take common opinion on Ganker as my own, and that often meant shitting on games I had never even played and them being popular was part of the reason why. I'm glad to have grown out of it, but I imagine a lot of people were like that and stayed like that. It can just be fun to shit on something and it can make you feel smarter than the wider audience who all are won over by whatever's popular. I don't think the people like that would actually love whatever they're shitting onif they gave it an honest shot, but I think the vitriol towards popular things is motivated mainly by wanting to be in on the want to see a trainwreck or some drama with each new popular relase, when if they weren't attracted to the excitement of laying into something like that they probably just wouldn't care about the game.

Contrarianism is important because it provides an alternative viewpoint and forces people to think about how/why they enjoy something.

    > Does anyone actually hate games BECAUSE they're popular?
No but normalgays can’t understand that. They can understand disliking one or two popular games, but disliking more than that labels you as a contrarian who dislikes them because they are popular

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I will add that the more a game is hyped up, the higher my expectations for greatness will be, for lack of a better way to put it.

I unironically play games that have a score of 55-65 in metacritic on the off chance I'll actually find an underappreciated gem.

      I respect that.

Do people forget that some really bad games are popular due to time-sunk fallacies and "it's fun with friends" mentality?

I'm sure BF2042 was popular for a moment in time, but it still doesn't make me like it. What a bunch of bullshit.

I've owned Crystar for a while now and still haven't gotten around to it. I saw someone passionately speaking about how it won them over and I barely even read what they said in case it spoiled something, but I went and got the game anyway because their enthusiasm for the game interested me, but I just have a bunch of other stuff to play and something else keeps getting in the way.

Objectively it's pretty bad, the combat is too simple and repetitive so I ended up playing on easy and rushing the shit out of it. Enjoyed it a lot mostly for the story, which is some kind of Madoka written by Yoko Taro (but not as good as that would really be). Aesthetics are great too.

              Anonymous

I'm still interested in giving it a go, I'm not the most charitable to games that are bad to play but make up for it with story or aesthetic or whatever, but I also often find myself thinking they're not as bad as they're made out to be anyway.

Using the level of popularity a game has, to determine whether you want to play it or not, is petty as hell.

Contrarians don't enjoy video games because the medium is too popular. You should stop playing them as well
