For those who played CS:S, the best part of the game was all the random custom content (weird maps in minigames, jailbreak etc).
What are some of your fondest memories of custom game modes or maps?

Jailbreak was always fun when you had power tripping guards
Zoomers only know csgo, you fucking projecting zoomer
>Zoomers only know csgo
I was born in 2000 and I remember plsying CS:S
Are you brazilian or something? CS:GO came out when you were 12.
Man, 2000 bros are already 23 years old...
Time flies.
retard
Zombie madness / Zombie Escape
Kino maps like Mako Reactor, Minas Tirith, Predator.
Servers like PlagueFest, GFL, STFU, SG
Jailbreak was awesome as well.
This. Paper escape and all the weird special weapons that worked surprisingly well, full blown boss fights, and fucking helms deep. God damn these were the best.
Take me back bros... Modern Zombie Escape is fucking garbage. All PvE laser shit, everyone uses cheats and CS:GO is even worse.
Mappers lost their soul by trying to "stay relevant" for their hard work, instead of making a good map...
I actually was late to the zombie game but its pretty fun.
The funniest thing for me was playing Fistful of Frags, and stgggs was on mic saying how bad the game is, while 1st.
Mic and chat strats are real lol.
A friend of mine used to hop in jailbreak servers with me and we would gunplant each other and generally be shitbag CTs until we got caught. We tried it again in our mid-20's and it just wasn't the same. Life sucks.
Is that because of the player base now or just being older?
It's still fun but it's a mixture of zoomers / oldfags. Primarily zoomers though spamming their shitty memes. I swear if I hear "BRUH" one more time.
Also half the zoomers are using cheats, I fucking hate it. They are so shameless as well.
The circle of life my friend... When you were young and playing it I'm sure the oldfags said the same thing lol.
Being older. It just isn't as entertaining or funny. Maybe it's that we're not cocksucker teenagers anymore, but we just didn't get the same hysterical enjoyment out of fucking with people on jb.
On the flip side of things I went into a deathmatch server last year and it was a bunch of dudes who had been playing that same server for almost 2 decades continuously. I was able to ascertain through their conversation with each other that they were just a bunch of blue collar dudes (delivery truck drivers I think) who did their shit then came home and hopped on CS:S for several hours. It was kind of cool but also sad to think about how much time had passed and how I'd gone through middle school/high school/college/the military and had all these wild ass experiences meanwhile they were just doing their routes and coming home to CS:S the whole time, probably not even realizing how much time was flying by them.
Sorry if that went in a really cringe direction but damn I had forgotten about that
Anon i want to hear of one of your wild ass experiences
its weird how people think of counterstrike as this comp 5v5 game now
to me counterstrike is only a jump in jump out game on random ass maps
It was considered low skill and slow 20 years ago... Now arguably the highest skill ceiling game. How far FPS has fallen.
>It was considered low skill and slow 20 years ago
No it wasn't. You can't gaslight me about anything in regards to 20 years ago and later FPS games, I'm the most legit person who ever comes to Ganker in regards to that era with the most important/highest level experiences of that era.
>gaslight
bro, Quake and Unreal Tournament were THE games to play back then.
>implying new things werent always more exciting than things that were out
lol
Not that anon but he’s right. Quake was the sweat zone. CS had sweat too but fuck Quake fov is a meme for a reason
again, you cant tell me anything about the era, and i competed at much higher level in both quake and cs than anyone you have known
feel free to AMA about 90s fps online communities etc. btw
i guess i wish people would ask me more. i have to face the facts that i feel life was just better back then. miss being excited about things.
sorry.
I was very young but my dad and older brother played online vidya back in the 90s. Probably remembering with Rose tinted glasses but it seemed very wild west back then. More mystery in games (or anything online) back in the 90s. People seemed more genuine from memory too. Did you find that the same anon?
yeah, no not rose tinted at all, the experiences offered today are extremely corporate and curated, like for instance old counterstrike literally 2/3 of the servers would be running some ridiculous maps not the real competitive ones
A good example of this to elaborate, would be the teamfortress map cross the border, or border1
most of the server was mexicans, and a few guys on the other team were border patrol. the mexicans didn't have any weapons and just tried to dodge the border patrol who were pyros, scouts, soldiers and medics I believe. The mexicans had to make their way to a truck, you could jump in the back and it would carry you over the border, that's how you win.
It was so janky and such a mess to play compared to online games today...but the experience was so pure in comparison, i mean look at the very premise of it
if you escaped it would play a sound file that goes "Yeeeehaw!!!"
I agree. Games are too safe now to fit into a corporate world. No one really takes a chance anymore as they like to stick to safe options. A lot of the fun was the weird stuff (like you mention in the border patrol), just filled with soul that is hard to capture unless created with pure intentions and not profit minded. Wish I got to play in that server it sounded like a lot of fun. One of my favourite was death trap game mode with the map that was on a giant poker table
Any of the abstract maps that Nipper created like zuhhh and yeayuhhh
Putting nipper maps on a clan owned server once I got admin access and map changed when we had a full server and make randoms play on maps like nippers_opus and blahhh
>uuiiuuuuu wau wau wau
only cs 1.6 fags will understand
as a 1.6 fag, i do not understand.
gays
>uuiiuuuuu wau wau wau
shut up gay i dont speak fucking nigerian
zoom zoom
Yes, a 32 year old zoomer.
Kys gay.
I play cs 1.6 to this day and I don't understand this.
Holy shit it took me a bit but do you mean this?
God damn son I’d have used “ITS TIME TO PLAY THE GAAAAEEEEEEMMMM” before that but I guess only WONfags would get that.
>cvi_westwood
>de_westwood
Ohh, if this
is what you mean. Yes I understand. It makes sense now. I haven't played 1.6 in 15 years.
If you miss any of the fun pub server vibe and culture of CS. Play VR. Seriously I play Pavlov and a few other VR shooters and it’s all server browsers and weird custom server modes and pub servers. It’s god damned glorious. Even the Quest 2 version of Pavlov is fun when you wanna pub stomp children. Or play cheese world zombies. Just last night I played gungame in 1.6s Walmart map and it felt like home.
The only thing I hate about Pavlov gun game is that knifing should downgrade their level like CS.
i remember when valve put out that optional economy setting that adjusted the price of all the weapons/equipment based on how frequently they were purchased. awps and body armor were $16000 and glocks were $1. i found if you bound script to backspace, you could hold backspace to rapidly execute the script. so i would find 24/7 office services with physics enabled and buy $16000 worth of glocks in T spawn by holding down backspace to execute my buy glock then drop script. i'd drop them into the filing cabinets and wait for an inevitable HE grenade which would crash most servers
>I took advantage of the best era in online gaming to be gay
fag.
yeah. i also emptied flatgrass maps in gmod servers that had wiremod. i made a script that found the person furthest from spawn and moved whatever object it was attached to towards them. i attached it to a proximity bomb so it would blow up when it got near someone and i made the whole thing invisible. best part was the death from the explosion registered as a suicide so people didnt know who it was. on servers that had damage disabled i replaced it with an extremely loud and high pitched beep.
24/7 fy_iceworld. Bonus points if they ran the WC3 mod and I could be invisible. It almost hurts to remember the good times before GaaS and MTX ruined everything forever.
I remember all of it.
Low grav, high friction rats
Surf
Gungame, fy.
And the classics.
Just the vast amount of maps and fun I had in them. And those times when you jump on a full server that's just chaos, and the map is just the right kind for it, it hits the spot and then you fall asleep with the AC and full of yummy food.
Some of my best times have been playing Source. I wanna make maps now. I've made some, and have designs for some. I wanna make one that's like up in the clouds, with awesome aesthetics.
Oh and the music while playing Source, just truly awesome.
Rats kitchen, bedroom, garage.
Lego maps.
Agreed anon, it was great. I think part of the charm was you never knew what you were going to get, game modes and maps you've never seen before were plentiful.
Yup, it's just kept on giving, truly a blast.
All the peeps who made them rock.
Anyone remember the builder servers for Zombies? I can't remember the name but you could build your own fortifications. It was heavily admined by autists but it was a lot of fun.
