What other Castlevania games should I play?
3, 4, X, the gba games. 1 to see how far you get. 2 with the Retranslation patch
Portrait of Ruin
Play Rondo. SOTN is actually a sequel for it
Touhou Luna Nights
These two.
Aria of Sorrow
The only bad Castlevania games are the Gameboy(original) ones and Dawn of Sorrow
>CotM is good now
I wouldn't say it's good, but it's not awful or anything. It's just kinda there
It's great game if the enabled sprint by default instead of double tap.
And Judgement and everything with Lords of Shadow in the title.
>dawn of sorrow
its just more aria, how is it bad?
lol dawn of the sorrow is the best castlevania you are a troll sir
The only take worse I've seen is that other guy hating on SotN artwork. What the hell is this thread
Battle of Olympus
Faxanadu
Zelda 2
What killed Castlevania?
most of the games being Nintend𐐬 exclusive?
Just lost steam like a lot of Konami properties. The truth is the relevant franchises take breaks.
Kojima and his shitty spinoff
Kojima didn't make Mirror of Fate or Lords of Shadow 2 (both got shit sales and reviews)
he was only a producer for the first game.
Mirror of Fate was the best of the 3 by far and it wasn’t very good.
You either adapt to 3D or get left behind
2 games on PS2 were 3D
3 games on PS3/X360/PC were 3D
Yeah but they sucked
Making shit games is not adapting
Pokemon, metroid and sonic are still alive despite the shitty 3D games
>Pokemon
No matter what happens Pokemon always sells despite quality or lack thereof
>Metroid
The Prime games were a hit, as far as I'm aware, so no one though there was anything inherently wrong with 3D Metroid. Other M was just a bad game and everyone accepted it as such
>Sonic
A budget franchise. It's given no budget so even 100k sales will mean profit.
Castlevania on the other hand I've seen a lot of people think it just can't work in 3D. Doesn't help that LoS, which is the best selling Castlevania game, is CV in name only. Lament and Curse went with a sort of DMC style combat which I think fits but the level design killed its changes of being a hit.
Castlevania on the N64 was good. Legacy of Darkness less so.
It's not without its positives but I think they're outweighed by the negatives or just bland elements. CV on the N64 does have my favorite main menu though with that beautiful Bloodlines rendition on the violin.
For 3D Castelevania I much prefer Curse of Darkness. The only negative was really the level design, everything else I thought was great.
The only issue with Castlevania on the N64 is the targeting and some of the hit boxes. Everything else is very good or excellent.
Agree to disagree. Too much of its design was walk past the exit, go the other end and back, that nitroglycerin quest, art direction was weak, characters were dull, can't remember any tunes, combat was repetitive, awkward control scheme, also very easy. Overall it just seemed very cheaply made, likely from the devs just trying to figure out how to do CV in 3D and having to cut corners everywhere. Still haven't tried Legacy. One day I will.
>Too much of its design was walk past the exit, go the other end and back
Like the Villa, the underground waterway, duel tower, the tower of execution, and the clocktower? But I don’t see how showing the goal that must be unlocked is a bad thing.
>that nitroglycerin quest
That was good.
>art direction was weak
No.
>characters were dull
They were good.
>can't remember any tunes
Pleb.
>combat was repetitive
The combat was more than just mashing buttons like the PS2 games.
>awkward control scheme
Baby duck syndrome.
>also very easy
Compared to the PS2 games it is Castlevania III in that regard.
>But I don’t see how showing the goal that must be unlocked is a bad thing.
The problem is that when walking back it's just more of the same. No new challenge or shortcut or anything. The PS2 games also had a problem with level design but mostly for how long the hallways were. Not too much of a problem as long as you don't feel the need to backtrack for 100% completion.
>the rest
Nah. On the PS2 enemies were aggressive, art direction was top notch, nice amount of enemy variety, music was fantastic, controls were tight, both games allowed for a nice combat variety. I particularly liked the real time inventory of Lament which unfortunately Curse got rid of, Lament had the origins of CV, Curse had nice production values for the story. I've seen people say CV64 is the worst 64 game but that's an exaggeration. It's just not good rather than being straight up bad.
If you like that art direction you just have shit taste. It’s that awful Ayami Kojima shit that does not suit Castlevania at all. But it should be obvious that you have shit taste since you like playing a bland, hallway simulator with button mashing combat.
>He doesn't like Ayami Kojima
You could've told me you had horrible taste. Would've saved us both 10 minutes.
It’s the worst art style for any game. She is shit, if you like her style then you are a total pleb. It symbolises the downfall of Castlevania.
Without her artstyle Castlevania would've stayed died a long time ago. It'd be a franchise only talked about as some hidden gem by 40 year old youtubers. Her art elevated Castlevania into eternal god status never to be replicated to the point that anyone who even tries to give their game some romantic, in the artistic movement sense, art style will be compared to CV.
Her soulless, ugly art has done nothing for Castlevania but turn it into an endlessly rehashed, unimaginative series designed to please unskilled dullards like you who are amused by pointless busywork.
You're complaining about gameplay, knuckledragger. Might as well say the janitor that was hired during SOTN was the downfall for CV. Her art has made CV stand out beyond just another dime a dozen platformers, whether you like it or not.
No it hasn’t. Her and Igrashi are the assassins who killed Castlevania and made it an ugly, soulless Metroid ripoff.
>metroid ripoff
Shit, son. Have you even played Metroid? Aside from the level design they're night and day. There's always romhacks for CV1 if you're so inclined.
The only difference is that Igarashi tacked on a half-baked levelling system. Otherwise it’s just Metroid wearing Castlevania skin.
Heavily disagree. Even nowadays with all metroidvanias around I'd argue Metroid still stands out for the crowd.
For one it's a shooter, most go for melee combat. Powers in CV and others tend to be more situational while in Metroid it heavily changes how you interact with the map. It's not just being able to double jump or something. Powerups in Metroid almost act like buffs that you can use in synergy. Not so much for CV. One of my personal complaints for igavanias. Arguably the soul system in aria is meant to help with this but I think it's still a bit too restrictive.
Clearly you’re just too retarded to know the difference between game design and cosmetics.
>major powerups are handled differently
>cosmetics
Says the guy who blames the cover artist for ruining the franchise.
Why do you write like such a gay? All your posts reek of Reddit.
Run out of arguments? Maybe Twitter is more your style.
Another Reddit tier post.
You make me laugh, anon.
Is this supposed to be an “updoot”?
You're more familiar with reddit than I am, you tell me.
You’re trying too hard.
I've never been one to just say seethe or cope or post wojack. Too lazy a response.
>game design and cosmetics
In realation, shortly OT: Has here anyone worked in a big company like game or tech?
Then why did bloodstained do so well? That game is just an ugly sotn for waifushitters
>adapt
you meant ruin
there isn't a single franchise that went 3d born during 2d days that was worth playing
>give IGA less and less budget for each following IGAvania
>had the choice between 3D Alucard game directed by IGA or Gabriel series reboot directed by MercurySteam guys
>for whatever reason Kojima mentions that Gabriel's game looks better so Konami rolls with it and funds Lords of Shadow instead
>IGA get fucked and makes last low-budget game (Harmony of Despair)
>Konami tries to move him to mobile game development but instead IGA tells them to fuck off and quits Konami because he hates mobage development
>the last successful Classicvania was ReBirth and it was a WiiWare remake in 2009
And suddenly nobody in Konami can make good Castlevania game because LoS2 bombed hard due to fucked up development
I loved playing Harmony of Despair last September with Ganker. The music and fun times punching Astarte in her bagina helped me through some sad times.
The move to 3D. The N64 games weren't very good but they tried again with 2 for the PS2. I like the games and they have a lot of positives but are weak when compared to new IP's that were coming out at the same time. At his point Konami relegated Castlevania to handheld more cheaply made titles.
I still think Kojima had a hand in killing Castlevania. At this point he was high up in the company and wanted more money and more staff for himself so he convinced Konami to outsource Castlevania and Silent Hill.
A stream of garbage releases starting with Judgement alienated the fans and have it a bad reputation with everyone else. Essentially the same thing that happened with Silent Hill.
Castlevania just wasn't a big seller, and definitely not as big as Konami wanted it to be. They wanted Resident Evil or Metal Gear numbers, while Castlevania had seldom produced something that could be considered a loss, it also never grew a very big fanbase and never really got out of niche game franchise tier. They actually achieved that pretty fucking successfully with Lords of Shadows, but fucked it up just as quickly with Lords of Shadows 2.
Konami and their attempt to appeal to the western market during the 360/PS3 era, same thing as Capcom.
But unlike Capcom, Konami pulled back on videogames and killed the Castlevania line after the whole thing blew up in their face where Capcom brought development back inhouse and stopped explicitly aiming at the western market and is making more money then ever for doing it.
Castlevania died mainly due to being in the crossfire of the whole ordeal.
>What other Castlevania games should I play?
if you liked sotn then the nds games are next in line
portrait of ruin, dawn of sorrow, order of ecclesia are all must-plays in my opinion
for more classicvania besides the nes ones i recommend bloodlines on genesis and super castlevania iv, rondo apologists get the rope
that's it, you just played the only one that matters.
Aria of Sorrow is the best Castlevania
>the soul system and variety
>perfect pacing with no filler
>no shitty inverted castle
>the crazy easter eggs and attention to detail (like in all igavanias)
>the new game+ mode
>the insane level of replayability
Only downside is the bosses are pretty bad but THAT ONE BOSS is the best boss in the entire series.
Dracula's Curse is the best
If you disagree it's a skill issue
I agree CIII is the best classicvania and honestly I could go either way between it and Aria
>the soul system and variety
Ah yes, the "oops, you got a soul dupe, welp it's useless haha" thing that wasn't even fixed in DoS because a bunch of 3-star rarity souls were maxed out at 1st soul and weren't used in weapon synthesis. Bonus points for FUCKING BUGGED LUCK STAT (all because Harmony of Dissonance fucked it up in the first place, and IGAvanias always reuse a bunch of code from older titles so both AoS and DoS had bugged LCK stat that didn't do SHIT)
>no shitty inverted castle
How is that a bad thing?
>insane level of replayability
That's not CotM or PoR though
You find good armor and accessories while travelling across the castle... but you get absolutely garbage weapons because game expects you to do weapon synthesis and get high-tier weapons by farming souls and fusing them with weapons you currently have. Bunch of weapons required very rare souls (3-star ones like Valkyrie) just to get to middle tier weapons, so you were basically forced to farm unless you said "fuck it" and beat the game with garbage weapons.
>but you get absolutely garbage weapons
>so you were basically forced to farm unless you said "fuck it" and beat the game with garbage weapons.
Ive never met a single person who has done this and beaten the game unless they wanted a specific soul
It just needs some bugfixes and a better localization to be truly perfect. I appreciate how short it is.
Rondo of Blood is better.
You will either love or hate OoE
Aria of Sorrow, and if you want more, Dawn of Sorrow. Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia are also pretty good.
Gosh, the OST in all of these games go hard. I love DoS's OST the most of the DS games as it was my first Castlevania game and I still hum the music to it. Gaze Up at the Darkness and An Empty Tome were AMAZING in Harmony of Despair!
SotN is in its own league. Anyone who tries to tell you the GBA/DS games are just as good or better is full of shit. As for the classicvania games, they're very different but there are a lot of great ones.
>SotN is in its own league. Anyone who tries to tell you the GBA/DS games are just as good or better is full of shit.
I've never played the GBA or DS games but so true
I've played them so I know for a fact that the people who pretend they're good are full of shit.
> Traditional
Super Castlevania and Rondo. definitely Rondo if you love the music
> Metroidvania style
GBA ones are all great especially Aria of Sorrow and Circle of the Moon
Super Castlevania Bros is just casualised, boring crap. Is it even possible to lose a life before the Frankenstein fight?
I love Castlevania 4 because of this song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzXtYhCoTpM
All of them, theyre all great
The PS2 vanias were clean, simple fun and I'm tired of pretending they weren't.
Go through hallway, enter door, mash buttons til enemies are dead, repeat 40 times. Such a thrilling couple of games.
Rondo of Blood, Order of Ecclesia
like the rpg mechanics, levels, equipment, spells? play all the ones after sotn for gba/ds.
like the combat and platforming but not the rpg stuff? play cv4, dracula x
Aria of Sorrow
