The Prime games were a hit, as far as I'm aware, so no one though there was anything inherently wrong with 3D Metroid. Other M was just a bad game and everyone accepted it as such
              >Sonic
A budget franchise. It's given no budget so even 100k sales will mean profit.
Castlevania on the other hand I've seen a lot of people think it just can't work in 3D. Doesn't help that LoS, which is the best selling Castlevania game, is CV in name only. Lament and Curse went with a sort of DMC style combat which I think fits but the level design killed its changes of being a hit.

Castlevania on the N64 was good. Legacy of Darkness less so.

It's not without its positives but I think they're outweighed by the negatives or just bland elements. CV on the N64 does have my favorite main menu though with that beautiful Bloodlines rendition on the violin.
For 3D Castelevania I much prefer Curse of Darkness. The only negative was really the level design, everything else I thought was great.

The only issue with Castlevania on the N64 is the targeting and some of the hit boxes. Everything else is very good or excellent.

Agree to disagree. Too much of its design was walk past the exit, go the other end and back, that nitroglycerin quest, art direction was weak, characters were dull, can't remember any tunes, combat was repetitive, awkward control scheme, also very easy. Overall it just seemed very cheaply made, likely from the devs just trying to figure out how to do CV in 3D and having to cut corners everywhere. Still haven't tried Legacy. One day I will.

                >Too much of its design was walk past the exit, go the other end and back
Like the Villa, the underground waterway, duel tower, the tower of execution, and the clocktower? But I don’t see how showing the goal that must be unlocked is a bad thing.
                >that nitroglycerin quest
                That was good.
                >art direction was weak
                No.
                >characters were dull
                They were good.
                >can't remember any tunes
                Pleb.
                >combat was repetitive
The combat was more than just mashing buttons like the PS2 games.
                >awkward control scheme
                Baby duck syndrome.
                >also very easy
Compared to the PS2 games it is Castlevania III in that regard.

                >But I don’t see how showing the goal that must be unlocked is a bad thing.
The problem is that when walking back it's just more of the same. No new challenge or shortcut or anything. The PS2 games also had a problem with level design but mostly for how long the hallways were. Not too much of a problem as long as you don't feel the need to backtrack for 100% completion.
                >the rest
Nah. On the PS2 enemies were aggressive, art direction was top notch, nice amount of enemy variety, music was fantastic, controls were tight, both games allowed for a nice combat variety. I particularly liked the real time inventory of Lament which unfortunately Curse got rid of, Lament had the origins of CV, Curse had nice production values for the story. I've seen people say CV64 is the worst 64 game but that's an exaggeration. It's just not good rather than being straight up bad.

                Anonymous

If you like that art direction you just have shit taste. It’s that awful Ayami Kojima shit that does not suit Castlevania at all. But it should be obvious that you have shit taste since you like playing a bland, hallway simulator with button mashing combat.

It’s the worst art style for any game. She is shit, if you like her style then you are a total pleb. It symbolises the downfall of Castlevania.

                Anonymous

Without her artstyle Castlevania would've stayed died a long time ago. It'd be a franchise only talked about as some hidden gem by 40 year old youtubers. Her art elevated Castlevania into eternal god status never to be replicated to the point that anyone who even tries to give their game some romantic, in the artistic movement sense, art style will be compared to CV.

Her soulless, ugly art has done nothing for Castlevania but turn it into an endlessly rehashed, unimaginative series designed to please unskilled dullards like you who are amused by pointless busywork.

You're complaining about gameplay, knuckledragger. Might as well say the janitor that was hired during SOTN was the downfall for CV. Her art has made CV stand out beyond just another dime a dozen platformers, whether you like it or not.

The only difference is that Igarashi tacked on a half-baked levelling system. Otherwise it’s just Metroid wearing Castlevania skin.

Heavily disagree. Even nowadays with all metroidvanias around I'd argue Metroid still stands out for the crowd.
For one it's a shooter, most go for melee combat. Powers in CV and others tend to be more situational while in Metroid it heavily changes how you interact with the map. It's not just being able to double jump or something. Powerups in Metroid almost act like buffs that you can use in synergy. Not so much for CV. One of my personal complaints for igavanias. Arguably the soul system in aria is meant to help with this but I think it's still a bit too restrictive.

The move to 3D. The N64 games weren't very good but they tried again with 2 for the PS2. I like the games and they have a lot of positives but are weak when compared to new IP's that were coming out at the same time. At his point Konami relegated Castlevania to handheld more cheaply made titles.
I still think Kojima had a hand in killing Castlevania. At this point he was high up in the company and wanted more money and more staff for himself so he convinced Konami to outsource Castlevania and Silent Hill.

Castlevania just wasn't a big seller, and definitely not as big as Konami wanted it to be. They wanted Resident Evil or Metal Gear numbers, while Castlevania had seldom produced something that could be considered a loss, it also never grew a very big fanbase and never really got out of niche game franchise tier. They actually achieved that pretty fricking successfully with Lords of Shadows, but fricked it up just as quickly with Lords of Shadows 2.

Konami and their attempt to appeal to the western market during the 360/PS3 era, same thing as Capcom.
But unlike Capcom, Konami pulled back on videogames and killed the Castlevania line after the whole thing blew up in their face where Capcom brought development back inhouse and stopped explicitly aiming at the western market and is making more money then ever for doing it.
Castlevania died mainly due to being in the crossfire of the whole ordeal.

      >the soul system and variety
Ah yes, the "oops, you got a soul dupe, welp it's useless haha" thing that wasn't even fixed in DoS because a bunch of 3-star rarity souls were maxed out at 1st soul and weren't used in weapon synthesis. Bonus points for FRICKING BUGGED LUCK STAT (all because Harmony of Dissonance fricked it up in the first place, and IGAvanias always reuse a bunch of code from older titles so both AoS and DoS had bugged LCK stat that didn't do SHIT)
      >no shitty inverted castle
How is that a bad thing?
      >insane level of replayability
That's not CotM or PoR though

      >dawn of sorrow
its just more aria, how is it bad?

You find good armor and accessories while travelling across the castle... but you get absolutely garbage weapons because game expects you to do weapon synthesis and get high-tier weapons by farming souls and fusing them with weapons you currently have. Bunch of weapons required very rare souls (3-star ones like Valkyrie) just to get to middle tier weapons, so you were basically forced to farm unless you said "frick it" and beat the game with garbage weapons.
