In addition to everything everyone else said, both biomes have their own specific hardmode material. Crimson crafts ammo/melee enchantment/spell that causes a defense debuff, Corruption variants cause a DoT that increases knockback.

Akshually explosive bullets are better for mobbing, crystal bullets are a meme unless you are up against shit with big hitboxes aka bosses.

Calamity has (in)fame for being full of bullet hell bosses like empress or moon lord but way worse.
In bullet hell games there's this concept called "grazing" which means moving slowly to just barely dodge bullets, this means you run out of space to dodge less often than panic dodging and running around.
Then there's "streaming" which is just repeated grazing in an optimal pattern to easily dodge bullets.
This pattern involves moving horizontally then a quick burst of vertical movement to change direction, then repeat.
In other words, flying in circles while pressing the shoot button.
calamity bosses really like to fill up your entire screen with dozens of shitty tiny projectiles that kill you in 3 hits and require tiny precise movements to dodge
as opposed to vanilla bosses which attack you from obvious directions and there's a clear direction you can dodge towards that'll make them miss

I fought them once before 1.4 and they seemed a bit absurd but I also brute forced a lot of bosses by playing multiplayer. I'm playing solo this time and I expect it to be hell based on previous experiences
every time I try calamity I get insanely burnt out super fast
so much shit that doesnt go anywhere, so many biomes that dont really do anything, and so many fricking bosses the regular gameplay exists to just be a 5 minute break between the bossrush that seems to start halfway through pre-hardmode
yeah if you aren't looking for bullet hell bossrush I can see why you wouldn't like it but to be fair, it's got some biomes that are pretty cool for the blocks it gives you access to if you have building autism. The Abyss and underground sea come to mind. Also it adding bosses to places like the dungeon make the existing biomes feel a little more fleshed out but again you'll be up to your eyes in boss fights.

I THINK it's just that the base speed was actually buffed making the hermes boots not as big of an upgrade. I haven't found any listing about changes to the hermes boots speed though.
In vanilla it seems like with boots you are capped at a certain movement speed until you get enough buffs so that your speed without boots would exceed the speed of the dash the boots give. Calamity buffed the base movement speed a bit, and removed the soft cap when boots are equipped, so the difference between not having boots and having boots in the early game isn’t as large.

Movement speed was one of the few things buffed, which is good in the early game considering that even the vanilla bosses require a bit more from the player if you’re on revengeance. Off the top of my head stuff that was nerfed was the meteorite set (gun now gets mp cost cut in half instead of being free), daedalus stormbow (supposedly shoots less and shoots even less when using holy arrows, still demolishes the destroyer), hardmode ores (debateable if it’s a nerf since it’s a progression rework that can be toggled off), damage reduction now having a soft cap, and summoners required to use a summon weapon at all times to keep full damage (not a huge problem now that whips exist). Most vanilla stuff like ore based armor sets seem to have gotten buffed by getting a set bonus if they didn’t have one, or slightly stronger effects to keep them in line with the calamity armor. I wouldn’t ever use night’s edge in vanilla but the size increase in calamity makes it useful.

Yeah but you need to go fish in the first place, and I just don't see many first time players doing that when they could be caving, exploring or building stuff instead. On top of that, the ocean isn't even that easy or convenient to get to (and bait isn't easy to get either unless you know to have a net and break the vegetation) for new players until late pre-hardmode.

You would have to first discover fishing (probably through the Angler), learn how to fish, learn that fish can be caught that aren’t just potion ingredients, go fishing in the ocean and stumble across it. You’re more likely to just do fishing for the quests only.

The newest big update (i think?) also added some extra item teleporters like the magic mirror which teleport you to specific places, namely the two beach biomes and a random underworld location.

I just hate that building homes is the most important in the early game when all of your tools are shit, but you can’t realistically put that crap off until you get the good tools. Sure to love building in all these bullshit biomes when clearing out any space at all takes all fricking day because early hammers suck dick.

the content mods range from mediocre (thorium) to laughably bad (calameme).

yeah a lot of calamity looks edgy but it's not all bad, it's decent though IMO it drags the game out a bit too much for me
Calamity is good if you want a bunch more boss fights and the game to continue scaling into content past moon lord. I guess you could say it's edgy but if you play it like normal terraria aka ignoring the lore then it's no edgier on the surface than wall of flesh or brain of cthulu. It's a good place to go if you just want terraria with more content but don't mind a sharp increase in difficulty. I hear a lot about thorium which adds some content but doesn't scale as wildly as calamity, and if you just want a ton of things to craft theres that one soul mod I can't recall the name of.
Calamity isn't even that hard (compared to vanilla anyway).
The bosses are just extremely obnoxious instead.
Providence is pretty rough and devourerer is the hardest worm style boss I can think of. Most of vanilla isn't that bad with moon lord being the peak of its difficulty imo, but Calamity has a lot more random spikes or harder versions of bosses.

Fargo's Soul is the one you're talking about. The crafting tree of the last item gets even bigger the more "major" content mods you install. Iirc the only "big" mods that are updated to 1.4 are Fargo's and Calamity.

I know there's already an ocean but It's essentially a nonexistent biome. I'd like something more akin to the abyss in calamity or just fricking anything more than a "relatively big water"

the problem is not a lack of biomes, the problem is 70% of the biomes in the game being utterly irrelevant after being 20 minutes in them at most
Space, but actually explorable with enemies and bosses. There's no reason why there aren't asteroids you can't mine, space heaps, ext.

Even with the changes to world evil's interactions with mud blocks the autistics are still going to rage about them even though it'll be in the past, just like the torch luck stuff even after it got patched out.
Oh well, good change. Honestly one of the things I'm hoping for in 1.4.4 though is the Zenith getting a unique use sound because the current one is just kinda lame honestly.

I'm playing Fargo souls mod in eternity, THIS is how master mode bosses should have been, a true fricking test of skill not just an attack beat stick with a bazillion HP.
I just killed eternity Queen Slime, this is by far one of the best mods I played.

QoL for a lot of stuff halving the grind considerably, revamped old bosses with brand new moves, phases, AIs and drops on eternity mode, eternity mode also grants every single enemy a new gimmick which makes them more dangerous, post ML content, but the real point of the game is to craft the soul of eternity, which is one fricking massive crafting tree that you start from the very start of the game all the way to post ML, the crafting autism is real with that one if you think the cellphone and ankh shield are bad the this thing is like 100 times harder to craft.
The deviant is cute too.

all the crafting trees also make collecting items fun for me since they combine into a single thing in the end

Is this game worth playing solo or is it one of those games that's only good in a group?
It can go either way I feel. It's like Minecraft, though the multiplayer is probably better for playing with friends or on gimmick servers (PVP, etc.) as opposed to Minceraft where it's comparatively much more viable to play on a vanilla sandbox server with dozens of randos.
Depends on how much you like craft so you can gather the material that let's you craft the thing that let's you gather the better material type of games
group only speeds up the process of material gathering but if you can install mods to increase drop rate of everything
solo is more fun too because the exploration in which you will do in your pace
Solo is great. zoomers who grew up on multiplayer games might disagree though.
It's much slower but it's nice to set goals and play at your own pace without the mad rat-race for your world's finite resources.

Why the frick do people enjoy Calamity? It would be one thing if it were an overhaul, but it just dumps all of its content on top of vanilla. And said content doesn't fit both in terms of sprite design, or scaling with vanilla (the Calameme weapons and armor are always definitively better than the vanilla ones of the same tier)
