Curious: how many of yall have gone back and replayed the games fully on original console?
I have tried many times but never get past maybe a gym or two. I feel like romhacks have ruined this for me. Gen 2 and 4 I played the most back in the day, but I cant stand either now because they feel slow and incomplete. I genuinely want to enjoy the vanilla games but just cant anymore.
what about playing romhacks on original console? did that work out for you?
I almost did for gen 3 (bike controls are very frustrating on a phone) but never followed through.
>phone
>original console
I was saying that playing on mobile is cumbersome for gen 3, which is why i looked into playing on original console. I just never followed through.
Interesting to learn in this thread that you can mod GBA to have a backlight. Having a kid soon and wanted to eventually introduce them to the older games, might finally try this out.

I replayed gens 3-5 on original hardware when gen 6 was about to come out to nuzlocke them but since then I've only played the games normally besides gen 6. Not interested in making weird rules to nuzlocke an open world game. Honestly gens 1 and 2 are so simple (3 included) that playing on emulator wouldn't feel like anything but an upgrade. Rom hacks are nice but I can only play so much of them personally. Pokemon has always been a handheld experience for me (excluding stadium) and I have a hard time not playing these games in hand held form.
I played Blue as a kid and couldn't even get through the Virtual Console re-release. So many quality-of-life features that weren't present in the original games. The lack of Running Shoes means walking everywhere until you get the Bicycle. Also, I kinda like things like color.
I replay gen 1-5 all the time.
1-2 on VC because original carts a massive pain to get and the batteries are also something I don’t wanna worry about. 3-5 on cart, and I have an OG red and black DS that I play them all on.
Funny you should ask too, cause I just finished a Diamond playthrough (picrel) and on Jan 1st I started a separate playthrough binge of gens 3-5 cause a couple of my friends started getting back into Pokémon and I wanted to play along with them. I’m gonna play Firered, Emerald, Heartgold, Platinum and then final black and black 2. Rn I’m on FireRed cause I like to take my time, but my friends are already on HGSS so I guess I should try to catch up.
Honestly I can’t relate to people like you and these guys
, I basically never play romhacks because they’re always so very clearly made by people who don’t understand the finer details of game design and just try to make everything harder. I don’t play these games for a challenge, I play them because I like the idea of going on an adventure with my pokebros and the games (Gens 1-5) provide this sort of escapism extremely well.
Very nice, cool you have friends who play pokemon
what's your fire red team looking like?
My team at the moment. I just got to Lavender town, so I’ll be adding a Growlithe to my team shortly, and I’ll probably catch some more dudes in the latter half of the game as well. Normally I preplan a team of 6 mons to catch as I progress, but this time around I’m going for a more lax playstyle to match the more casual approach of my friends, just sorta catching and training what I like, even if that means shuffling around 10-15 members.
My attention span is fried i can’t play the older games without a speedup button anymore, especially gen 4. I have a ton of nostalgia for the look/sound of the gen 4 games so i feel the urge to go back often but when i try to actually sit down and play them i get tired of it
I replayed every game in the series last year
they were mostly all boring except for emerald and usum
I can't get into playing the games on an emulator that isn't on the original hardware-- save for the Virtual Console versions of the GB and GBA ones for backward compatibility purposes.
Of course, this is fine for me, as I stopped trading in games in like... 2000. I still have almost all of my original Pokemon games from Gen 1 going forward (RIP my Red and Yellow copies, lost forever to time of Funcoland tradeins respectively), so at any time I can just pull a game out and play it on my original consoles.
I take good care of my things so they are all in perfect condition. I've even got my GBA modded to have a backlit screen and rechargeable battery.
I played an original Blue cartridge on a Gameboy Advance if that counts.
I started in 2017 in my challenge to 100% every generation with unique challenges (so no nat dex, but yes regional dex + Stadium games + Battle Facilities + contests + etc) with no assistance from outside hardware for the sake of injecting or cheating in Pokemon, but events were still very much on the table.
Once you hit gen 3, you just have this massive wall of things to do that if you are not a NEET will take you years to complete. It took me 3 1/2 years to learn and beat the Battle Frontier in Emerald. I then raised a different unique team for all Colosseums in Pokemon Colosseum. I have yet to do all of the eReader cards in Ruby.
The hard part about trying to enjoy the past games is that just like all Pokemon games, they are carried by how good the multiplayer aspects of the games are. If you are playing alone, of course you are going to get burnt out after a gym or two. You've played something very similar before and know all of the mechanics. It's not like the series has changed that much since gen 4. Playing gens 4+ is a lot better if you find people online to play with. There's pkmnclassic.net, here (although people here actually do not play the games), other sites like Orange Islands in Smogon, and of course people you know irl to play with.
Newer games are more fun than older games

You have to be 18 to post here
Since when is "yall" an underage thing?
It is a southern redneck thing.
Also people who use garbage English like aint
Southern rednecks lost the word to Black folks and yankee liberals who use the word because it’s “inclusive” and to imitate Black folks
All of them should get put into re-education camps alongside with the gender and troony gays
I know for a fact that I beat Moon more than once. I beat OR and AS once each, idk if that counts as a replay. I might have beat one of the gen 1 games more than once but I if I did then I don't remember what the team was
I deleted my og save in 2016 and replayed SoulSilver fully, since I didn’t experience it enough the first time. It was a blast and one of the highlights of that year for me. It might honestly be my favorite Pokémon game, and I still go back now and then to rematch Gym Leaders and hear the lovely music.
I'm currently playing Soul Silver with my DS lite
Doing postgame stuff and filling Pokedex. I'm using my Pokewalker too daily to get items and pokemon to fill my dex
>Pokewalker
Kino as frick. I really like being able to take my bros with me to work
The only reason for replays for me is to use specific mons that I've never used before, what else is there, the story? So yeah heavy use of speed up.
Sucks then.
I've been replaying them casually, taking my time with each one. Emerald, FRLG, Crystal, and BW2 are the highlights of the past two years doing this
Yes. I played SoulSilver every year before l actually filled out my Pokedex during the covid years. Sometimes even twice a year so I replayed it +15 times on my DSi XL.
Also replayed Platinum like 5-10 times don't know because I also replayed Diamond a bit but less. Did starter runs and speedruns, couldn't emulate because I never had my own PC as a kid so I replayed my games. Only games I never replayed are SM because I got tired after USUM which is basically a replay and all of the switch games.
I have an original DSi that I still use to play BW and B2W2 every few years. I also own HG, Diamond and Platinum but I won't be replaying them any time soon. I also have a GBA SP with Yellow, Crystal and Emerald but sadly the on switch flickers of at the slightest nudge and the save data keeps corrupting for some reason.
No, in general the only handheld I've really used in like a decade is my 3DS, and after SM it was just a Fire Emblem and Rune Factory 4 machine
However I have replayed everything at least once (except gen 7 and up (though USM is basically a replay right)) within the fast four years or so in emulators. I just prefer having everything on PC.
I don't play romhacks. I exclusively play original games on original hardware.

Thanks, new word for the filter.
I previously only had y'all.
Without online there isn't a single reason to play on console instead of emulator.
I've been working backwards since SnS launched. Last year I've been playing B2W2. I've caught/bred a living dex of every Pokémon naturally in these games, as well as Dream Radar. Working on the Dream World stuff now. All I have left is that and the last few movies in Pokéstar Studios. I don't have any interest in Battle Towers, so Subway isn't on my list although I did do all of PWT and both White Treehollow and Black Tower. There's probably some medal collecting I can still do too. I have been considering 100%ing the items, which would give me a lot more playtime.
I find that I rarely completely finish games now because I feel guilty for putting too much time into it or I decide I don't like my team choices and want to start again.
I do. Still occasionally play my gbc carts on my sp, but save batteries are a b***h so I also use my 3ds for them. Never feel the need to use a speedup or that they're too slow, guess I have managed to preserve some of my attention span at least despite being on this shithole.
I do replay them from time to time. Right now on Platin with 7 badges. Try out new teams I haven't used before.

have a nice day
Playing Heartgold on 3DS. I am having fun but I hate how theres leafstones only by postgame and the one I can get early is the pokeathlon nonsense. I want my Victreebel goddamnit
I've played Silver and Emerald like 6 times each.
I always play the games on original hardware. I usually never have a problem, even with the gen 4 games, which I tend to go back to Platinum and HeartGold the most.
would you be willing to sell me Pokemon Emerald if you have it? I can do paypal
I do a playthrough of Gale of Darkness every 4-5 years. Next one I plan on doing is one where Eevee doesn't evolve.
Almost constantly. I just need a reason to do so.
>gen1 solo raticate
>gen2 crystal getting teddyursa early
>gen3
basically using mons, moves or just wanna do better than i did as a kid. right now im trying to breed an female adamant Buneary in gen4 for a solo mon run
I play the all the old ones without issues, sucks to be you.
Recently wen back and played Heard Gold on my DS, it's still fricking amazing.
