It's a product of its time.
Basically a solo action dungeon crawler, pretty good at that too, but that's about it. Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle.

Just download the game on GOG, they have the Unity version and it's free, comes with a lot of improvements, and give it a try.
If everything go correctly, you'll get killed by the end of the second corridor.

Fun game. The dungeons are pretty long so my tip is to spec into Mysticism and use Recall to teleport to the exit. Second tip is buy a wagon as soon as possible. Also you might want to disable some of Unity's "enhancements" such as enemy infighting.

    Tip 1: It's free.
    Tip 2: Get Daggerfall Unity.

    >Immunity to paralysis is pretty strong. High Elves get it for free. Pick High Elf for easy mode.
    >Skills that are named after enemy types (Daedric, Harpy, etc.) are a meme.
    >Guild missions give the same amount of reputation no matter the quest difficulty, so if you just want to progress faster, do low rank rat killing missions instead of stuff like taking a lich contract because you'll be spending two hours in a dungeon just for +5 rep.
    >Almost every object in a dungeon can be a secret switch. Yes, even that random skull on the floor.
    >Cast mark at the dungeon entrance so you can get out quickly after clearing the objective.
Other than that, it's not that complicated. Spam low mana cost spells in town when you can. Specialize in one weapon type. You know, typical Elder Scrolls shit.

Yeah this one is essential. The first dungeon teaches you this, you can see blocked off treasure behind a bookcase and interacting with a chair next to it opens the bookcase.

Also the way teleports work is fucked. There are no rules.
      >red brick walls are teleports, but also sometimes they're not
      >sometimes you activate them by walking into them (you have to walk instead of run, if you run they don't activate)
      >sometimes you activate them by interacting with them
      >sometimes you get teleported by entering a specific room with no a brick wall at all
      >one of the main quest dungeons has random skulls that teleport you when you interact with them (skulls are generic scenery (this is required to complete the dungeon))

Unity fixes this, and similar bugs. Then there's a mod that puts them back in.

    >buying it
    Why?
You should only every play it for free and on the unity version, also you should absolutely activate the small dungeon feature.
High elf wizard is the best and most fun character to play as you can pretty much max out whatever you want with enchantments and try other playstyles once you're high enough level

Elder scrolls in my opinion not that good of the series, not about the quests and shit, I just don't like the gameplay part, but quests in daggerfall suck
