Why is it called ''Dark Souls'' if the souls are light and bright white colored?

      >At the start of product development, Miyazaki wanted the title of the game to be Dark Race. He would not want to use the word Souls anywhere in the title, as that would remind people of Demon’s Souls and would only make the explanation harder with regards to whether the new game is a sequel or not. So the title Dark Race solves possible legal issues as well as differentiates the game from its predecessor.
      >However, Miyazaki soon found out that he could not use Dark Race as it had some racist implications.
      >While searching for a better title, they started using the code name “Project Dark.”
      >Miyazaki continued searching for a fit title for the new game, and he came up with two candidates - “Dark Lord” and “Dark Ring.”
      >Dark was confirmed as the title of the Project Dark, and both “Dark Lord” and “Dark Ring” were nominated. We could not get the trademark for Dark Lord, but we did for Dark Ring, so it was decided by then.
      >However, at around the start of the year, we learned that “Dark Ring” means anus. It was said to mean anus in British slang.

tldr Dark Ring was the original name of the game

      >Dark Ring
      >The Ringed City
      >Elden Ring

Humanity you collect in-game is a black, swirling mass the Dark Soul of Mankind which originated from the Furtive Pgymy was the same. Every piece of humanity you get is just a fragment of the original Dark Soul that the FP gave to his followers (humans).

Why does DS3 filter so many people? It's objectively the best one. The first two games might have had higher peaks, but they also have way lower lows. Their quality is inconsistent. DS3 is the most consistent.

bosses and combat were great, but everything about the game was too derivative and it barely felt like its own entry with bloodborne visuals and ds1 references strewn every ten feet

people call it great and have all these attachments to it, and they're all rooted in the first game being so influential.

One of my main reasons for getting a ps4 last year was that I loved DS1 and 2 on release (played them on my old laptop) but I could only read all the amazing things about DS3 when it released.

I finally played it, clocked like 100 hours to finish the main game, buuut... I forever waited for it to 'get good'. I wouldn't say I didn't enjoy it mechanically, but the game starts gray and washed out, and finishes the same way.
It's too consistent for its own good, never rises above the start. You fight liked Champion Gundyr and the High Wall of Lothric? All those knight enemies and temples? Good, the entire game is like that in tone and visually.

I almost thought this was trolling, but I'll agree it has the best bosses. But good bosses can't save the game if I don't give a shit the rest.
Also hijacking thread because I just came to Ganker to talk about DS2 and this is the Souls thread up.

I just realized DS2 is the best Zelda game we have. People can criticize if it's a good Souls game or not all they want, but I just spent like 2 hours lightning all the torches in The Gutter to spawn a phantom and get his Witch Veil that gives immunity to curse and kill Nashandra with that, and I'm so satisfied.
The world is so big, colorful, varied. I don't think I disliked any single area except for Iron Keep, which was unfairly punishing (each knight is a worthy foe and there's a fuckton of them, you can't escape their aggro range, super speed, and even arrows).
Best sense of adventure in a game, it brought me memories of playing n64 Zelda as a kid, maybe even the NES ones.
And each area felt so unique, I don't think DS3 has anything close to it, it's like I was constantly changing my approach to the areas / they had one cool gimmick to be different from other places.
    >Gutter has me lightning torches and going through tons of fun platforms and bridges, constant checking of holes and jumping ledges to reach new areas.
    >Black Gulch, pretty much an extension of gutter, is the "swamp" of this game.... But it's not about slowly walking submerged in shit, cool green alien statues shoot poison and you can simply destroy them or dodge the shots. There's also black pools of liquid hiding abyss creatures, but you can light them on fire, this was the only time I changed to my pyromancy flame.
    >Dragon Aerie has DRAGONS, long bridges, constant danger of enemies that destroy your equipment and DRAGON EGGS you gotta avoid breaking because it will anger the dragons (but there's loot under some of them), a much better Archdrake's Peak.
    >Tseldora is full of spiders, gotta carry a torch like an adventurer to keep them away.

I might as well continue and save for future posts, DS2 really has a lot of areas that intuitively make you play differently
      >Shrine of Amana, I stacked all the magic resist I could at first for the sniping mages, later realized I can also snipe them and started playing with a long bow (and discovered they're fucking powerful), also constant checking of underwater enemies and edges into the abyss, one hell of a unique level
      >Dragon Shrine in which you only have to battle the minibosses every set of stairs, the dragon knights will only aggro if you try to escape or summon, otherwise they respectfully watch you duel their commanders
      >No man's wharf FIGHTING PIRATES there's a ship and everything, and weird alien creatures lurking in the dark. By this point you probably don't have farmable torches, i ran out of mine and had to walk through the darkness scared of them, full military camp battle
      >Shaded Woods with fog and invisible enemies, can't lock on
      >Shaded Ruins with multiple petrified enemies and special loot if you free them
      >Harvest Valley WAIT this is the real poison area of the game. Gotta play carefully, you're bombarded by charmers, then you enter the windmill and it's full of assassins, you can burn the windmill to make the boss fight easier.
      >DRANGLEIC CASTLE'S ENTRY, running a gauntlet of killing enemies so golem absorb their souls and open the gates. Castle itself has more moments like that.
      >Everything to do with Memories
I rarely felt like all I was doing was rolling and pressing R1, like half the areas have a gimmick or vastly different enemies to shake things up (Heide's Tower of Flame and Aldia's Keep are mostly giant enemies)

Don't know about original, but in SotFS there is a dude with a torch, that drops torches, on the far end of the lowest level in relatively big room behind the breakable crates.

Really, I only have two big issues with DS2:
      >you control like shit. Your character walks like a retard, needs to wind-up before dashing, can only move on a grid while locked-on (which is easily fixable adjusting your controller settings???? how?????), needs 24 points in an otherwise useless stat before they can take less than 2 years to drink or dodge reliably, and to top it all off, the game has the worst stamina management in the entire fucking series where everything eats the entire bar and it takes ages to recover so the controls feel even MORE shit
      >the retarded enemies and their placement. This isn't exclusive to SotFS either, vanilla is full of shitty gank squads and fags just barely outside of your vision which will kill you before you can even react, and then there's also how stupid a bunch of their attacks are, which is made even worse by the point about stamina
And what bothers me the most is that both of these should be easily fixable with mods, but after playing Seeker of Fire for a few tens of hours it's like all the problems are still there. Sligthly less so for the part about moving because only stamina really got fixed there.
Were it not for these problems, DS2 would easily be my favorite due to how varied and extensive it feels.

It's odd, I recognize that DS3 is in many ways the most polished, finished, high quality game in the trilogy. It doesn't have any glaringly bad bosses or areas or mechanics or other problems like the first 2, yet I never felt compelled to play it more than a single time, while I must have played through the others like 5 times each.
