Same here homie. I tried to play retail and it was so unbearably gay I dropped it. From experience though lower pop tight knit servers beat everything else. I'm pretty sure we'll see a pretty decent classic resurgence with or without a classic+ though. People just had to go through the motions first.

They were able to break free when the Lich King was weakened due to Illidan’s attack on the Frozen Throne, but why didn’t they come back under his control with the rest of the Scourge when Arthas merged with him?

The Lich King can’t just control the Undead as a whole; he can only control the undead he creates, or was already attached to him through inheritance after he murdered Mal’Gamis who was in control of a bunch of undead.
Also, the Lich that was also in charge of a bunch of undead who pledged his allegiance to Arthus.
Also, all the Dreadlords/demons who went on to serve him.
The Forsaken were part of the same Caste as Sylvanas - so when she “died” again and the brainwashing was removed completely, she was still in charge of her side of the undead. She can also create more through their own means, effectively also making her a Lich.
