It's both. These were reasonably commanding a couple hundred dollars not too long ago and that was probably a reasonable price for an out of print game in full box with all the doodads included. $5k is just horseshit speculation though.

It happens in waves. In a few years, the kids who grew up with the 3ds will want the games they had when they were kids.

      ???
The reason it costs so much is precisely because it's scarce, because mint condition physical copies of old games become rarer and rarer after they go out of production. Unless NFTgays get their way (and it looks like they won't) digital games are not affected by scarcity, there's no reason why most digital games would ever fall in this situation.

It costs $0 and like 60 seconds of your time to get a ROM of that game. Only massive tools buy secondhand physical games and they deserve to get taken for all they have.

If I want to replay the psx games from childhood I'll just use an emulator with less load times, higher fps+res and proper z-buffer. Only brand loyalist, braindead fanboys waste money on raspberry pi with a Nintendo sticker slapped on top of it you moronic homosexual.

in 2020 united states amended the anti money laundering act to force art auctions be more transparent. around the same time this game grading thing started to take off and because games arent art this new regulation doesnt touch them. draw your own conclusions.

If emulation, piracy and re-releases didn't exist, then it would be a crime. But they do, so who gives a frick? Whining about things of no practical value to anyone is stupid, and if you just wanna nostalgia then go listen to the music on Youtube or something.

Pokemon games and sealed booster boxes are a better hedge against inflation than 401Ks, treasury bonds, IRAs, ETFs, and savings accounts. For whatever reason, out of all the speculative assets that popped during the Covid bubble, pokemon held strong and became basically a legitimate investment.

It's the speculation market. The only people paying that much are the ones who plan to sell it for more later on. It's a game of musical chairs at best. I saw a guy last Comicon trying to sell shitty old comic books for hundreds of eurobucks, as if anyone cares about the first appearance of The Humbug. It'll dry up soon, like comics already have.

Literally only like a ten year old game. No way is it worth that much (or anything) as a "collectable".
