yeah like they'll see sales and won't make the same mistakes they did with super paper mario and on-wards.
Defend what? The grass is too blue and oversaturated, but otherwise looks good to me.
Not him but the top looks like carboard/diaramas and the characters look like 2d cartoons/stickers in it and don't match that well.
It would work if the characters were 3d to match them. I know other paper mario games did this but it doesn't look that good here, it sticks out mainly cause how detailed the environment is.
Compare that to the bottom where the colors work together, looks all vibrant and like they belong in that world. The back world isn't made of cardboard, and the characters aren't paper, they all look like cartoons but the environment has a 3d affect to it. The outline really helps in this regard.
Plus stuff like the background mountains looks weird with the detailed trees one of the mountains and the other mountains are empty, it looks a bit weird. The clouds also look generic compared to the bottom
Honestly what happened to colors in general? It seems like over the years devs (even when pursuing a cartoonish style) have become allergic to sharp contrasting colors.
It's true in real life too. People seem to think less contrast = more mature. I hate it. It's why I love the color in Ori. That said, OP's picture isn't bad and if it all looked like that I probably wouldn't mind. Hooktail looked extremely washed out.
Lighting in previous generations wasn't utilized as dynamically as it is now. You had to bake the lighting into the environment to save on processing power, which meant landscapes had to be carefully designed to look as it is intended and the result was that colors popped and everything looked vibrant. But these days consoles are powerful enough to have dynamic lighting effects that the average idiot consumer demands (usually without even realizing what they're asking for) so you get the washed out shit like on top because gross shaders and other effects are plastered onto the scene.
The top pic would probably look much like the bottom does if you'd just removing the lighting. Most modern games that have this issue with looking washed out actually have full, saturated colors when you're in a darker environment, so you can always tell when it's just a shitty lighting engine.
because that art direction was literally bad, and oversaturated colors look ugly
cant help you if you are going to base your opinion on your childhood experiences
The lighting (that causes the loss of saturation) is meant to make it look like real papercraft artwork, while the original looks distinctly computer generated. The trees are made of visible layers for the same reason
They tried using a lot of colors in FE Engage and people chimped out (not even talking about the retarded overly designed characters, but even the "normal" looking characters)
People chimped out about Engage solely because the game was an actual fire emblem game instead of the grooming simulator VN that came out before it
There's literally no one that defended 3H's shitty artstyle and barren musou graphics
>There's literally no one that defended 3H's shitty artstyle and barren musou graphics
FE gets hit hard by "complain about new game, actually the last game wasn't so bad after all" syndrome. Remember everyone shitting on the "sameface otome art" of 3H? People have been praising it this year.
Tendies are excited to play a shitty downgraded port of a 20 year old game that they can emulate right now, so I'm not surprised that they also think that 3H doesn't have muddy PS2 tier graphics
>game now really looks like one of those pop-up books, just as it was originally intended
It's an improvement. How the fuck can anyone look at the bottom and pretend it looks better?
tendie bros will drone on about how art style makes up for the actual graphics at a technical level being bad and then ignore that sentiment to defend a bad remake

Nope, nope, nope. Everything is wrong.
The holes don't look like holes.
The locker is sagging, not bent.
The screen didn't need to literally be a GBA.

And where are the dots on the upper half of the background?
>dropped the storybook style in favor of more fucking papercraft shit
I'm glad the gameplay is at least back but I fucking hate the overkill on the paper elements. like its already a fucking book you don't need to start making origami and paper mache shit
the same reason the silent hill remake is 2, because thats the one everyone knows more and thus they don't have to put in as much effort since the game is already sold
>Also why the fuck did they add in voices for Mario and Bowser. Part of the charm was that Mario was a silent protagonist in those games.
They are literally the exact same voice clips used in the original game. Mario and Bowser were not silent in TTYD, just 64.
I really can't say I recall Mario going "bing bing wahoo" whenever I made him jump. Pretty sure it was just a jumping sound effect, along the lines of the Super Mario World kind.
There are no Paper Mario fans; just people who are mad that TYD2 has never been released. Much like Starfox 64, TYD is the ONLY Paper Mario game the fans actually like.
Go to any average PM thread and you will see wars waged over PM64 and TTYD over which is better while SPMfags BRAVELY come out and state their opinion about how "SPM was actually good" and nuPMfags bait for (You)s.
It's been the format forever.
Be thankful we got spared with remaking PM64
That PC port will come soon enough and we can play it at 60+fps and with proper 16:9 support
All of this is optional BTW.
I won't. The lighting on the top looks like shit. The background and general composition looks terrible and lacks the brazen clarity of the Gamecube original.
weird i just emulated ttyd and beat it last night. i have no desire to play this remake, the lighting effects and slight perspective changes dont really add to it.
im in the same boat, although I actually still own my original
I'm glad its getting a re-release
I wish Nintendo would follow other studio's leads and add additional content, even if it's something small - but something like an optional chapter near the end of the game would be enough to get me to buy it again
I think TTYD was the biggest first party gamecube game that never got any kind of re-release or "replacement" (like smash bros)
yeah i skipped gamecube and had to emulate everything after the fact. i sort of wish i had played as they came out. MAYBE with a lot of time in between the polished graphic would have got me interested again.
What did you think of it? I always thought I loved TTYD, but I replayed it a couple of years ago and found it to be really boring. Way too much pointless dialogue, and extremely short/linear areas. I replayed the original N64 game around the same time and found it held up MUCH better. I found the added features and "complexity" in TTYD didn't really add any depth or challenge, they just kinda made everything a bit more tedious.
its way too FUCKING long. thats the thought that stands out the most. other than that, dialogue, story, characters, areas, are all really like-able. as someone thats a fan of gamecube mario all around i like that they tied in everything. i feel like the took the original (played them back to back in order) and made it bigger so i can see how someone would prefer the original to ttyd.
>its way too FUCKING long.
Yeah, this was definitely a big complaint I had as well, which lumped into there being too much talking. I did like the characters, but by the last few chapters I just didn't care. I was already strong enough to survive any battle, so all the backtracking and yapping just got tiresome.
Honestly it's a major complain I have about most Mario RPG-esque games after the N64 era. A lot of the Mario & Luigi games hit this point where you feel like you should be at the ending, but there's still two or three more chapters left. I barely finished Dream Team and dropped Paper Jam because of this.

TTYD has the better combat system, but N64 has the better "literally everything else". Like you said, it still doesn't amount to much since TTYD is still piss easy.
If you're interested, I'd recommend trying out the Infinite Pit or 1 Hour Randomizer mods for TTYD; they turn the game more into a roguelike which is, IMO, the best way to experience TTYD.
As for PM64, give Master Quest Junior a shot. It rewards knowing the game and makes combat more challenging.
>better "literally everything else".
Completely wrong. TTYD has infinitely better setpieces and setting. 64 plays things way too safe. TTYD is the part that fans remember and still make arts about because it has a wrestling tournament, a ghost turning people into pigs and stealing your body, a train travel on multiple days with a mystery in between and a spooky demon hidden behind a door that ends up possessing Peach.
This is what matters, much more than 64 having better level design.
While I agree with you on TTYD having more memorable chapters ("an ancient evil awakens" was a retarded twist, though), the better level design REALLY makes a difference. Playing Twilight Town and Keelhaul Key back to back makes me put my TTYD runs on hiatus every playthrough because IS fucking forgot to add shortcuts to their levels
>TTYD has infinitely better setpieces and setting.
But none of that translates to better gameplay, unfortunately. You can't expect me to happily suck down shameless padding and backtracking just because "yay pirates!" > because it has a wrestling tournament,
Which is boring as fuck and a complete cop-out. There's no actual exploration or gameplay during this entire chapter, just endless dialogue and forced battles that are piss-easy >a ghost turning people into pigs and stealing your body
One of the better chapters, but still full of backtracking and tedium > a train travel on multiple days with a mystery in between
Another filler chapter loaded with stupid dialogue and wandering around a confined area in lieu of actual gameplay >a spooky demon hidden behind a door that ends up possessing Peach.
Yes, I can just read a deviantart fanfic if I want that tier of storytelling, thanks.
You actually reminded me just how underwhelming this game actually was. Yeah, the ideas are cool and the characters are compelling, but in practice, so much of it is a poorly-paced slog. PM 64 was far more tame and "vanilla" in terms of concept, but the areas were laid out better and the pacing was 100 times better.
>gameplay
Nobody gives a shit. Bug Fables has better gameplay. Other RPGs have deeper and more intricate gameplay. Paper Mario is an RPG for kids. Setpieces, story and delivery matters a LOT in this game. People wouldn't remember 64 for its gameplay alone, they remember it because 64 sometimes delivered (pic related) >Which is boring as fuck and a complete cop-out. There's no actual exploration or gameplay during this entire chapter, just endless dialogue and forced battles that are piss-easy
Literally the most praised piece of Paper Mario content, 64 included.
It's fine if you have weird taste and just have a fetish for the mechanics of this simplistic Mario RPG for kids, but the vast majority of people who enjoyed 64 and TTYD ended up liking it for very different reasons and the mechanics ended up complementing everything else more than being the focus. Paper Mario is an adventure, not a deep RPG.

>Literally the most praised piece of Paper Mario content
I thought it was cool as a teenager just because of the concept, but the execution itself is terrible and boring.
You can say that storytelling and setpieces matter more than gameplay all you want, but then that door swings both ways. The difference between PM64's vanilla story is that it doesn't get in the way of anything else. TTYD's tedium isn't worth enduring even if the game had the best story of all time. Which it does not. After a while, the story itself becomes a part of the tedium.
I understand that it's a game genre aimed at kids, but the key difference is that the first game is still enjoyable as an adult because it's not a fucking slog that expects you to care about retarded dialogue in order to enjoy yourself. You can actually just play the game and it's fun and moves along quickly enough that you don't care if the battle system is shallow. Games are a sum of their parts, and 64 has a much better balance despite being simpler and less ambitious.
Wonder how many shitty remasters and remakes it's gonna take until they realize that adding these lighting effects and shaders makes the game look like fucking garbage.
It shat all over the Klonoa remakes too.
>PAPER Mario ttyd >Old version was clearly trying to emulate the feel/style of a diorama. >Remake actually looks like a cardboard diorama and paper cut out for characters
I really don't understand how this is bad other than if you have nostalgia warping your perspective and I like both iterations.
the paper part of paper mario was only a western thing because mario story would sound retarded to a western audience >but it became paper mario since ttyd
ttyd still kept the storybook aesthetic of 64 you gigaretard, it didn't have the papercraft aesthetic of stickerstar onwards
Amazing, top no longer looks like an immersive world the way bottom does, but instead looks like an arrangement of assets
HOW is it that modern devs so effortlessly fumble immersive visuals that were already solved for them with no creative work required on their part?
HOW is it that retro devs effortlessly made all those games feel real and immersive to the point everyone thought it's the standard, only for modern devs to prove over and over it's crazy hard because modern devs *simply can't do it anymore to save their lives*
The way things are going we're simply never going to have immersive games ever again
>Left: Skybox seam is noticeable but is designed to feel infinitely expansive >Right: Skybox blends in with water leaving an ambiguous feeling
This is the real crime.
They used that shitty plasticy paper like gift wrappings vs classic construction paper, literally called construction because it's for crafts like this.
honestly this is probably the disconnect the gays in this thread are having, cause original ttyd does have a more construction paper like design and the new game is super glossy and weird.
The fact that it's even a debate which is better is proof the game didn't need to be remade. At least not like this.

look like boring clipart
In both. But they are changed, for sure. >>Fake dithering effect on trees and far mountain is gone
Because there is actual shading and depth to the environment now, so they don't need the dot pattern as a stand in for shading. It actually looks even more like a pop-up book now.
is a fucking 3D object now
It's sprites in both, there's just actual lighting so it, again, fits more. >>Save box and pipe looks completely different

scene feels more pastel than saturated

I think that if they simply 1-to-1 remade the visual style as well there would be literally no point to a remake. Just putting the original in HD? It's pretty cool to see the pop-up book diorama visual style more fully realized. That said, if you don't like the new look, just play the original.
Did it? Everyone bitched about that artstyle change, too. I like HD for the slight gameplay improvements, but I actually think the cel-shaded look ended up working a bit better than the attempt to recreate it with (admittedly, pretty good) lighting and shaders. HD looks a bit closer to a clay artstyle, and I think the original looked more like a cartoon. We'll have to see about the TTYD remake. I've played the original many times over, just like WW, so the changed visuals will be a hard sell, but I'm currently liking it more than WWHD's changes.

I really don't think that say, Goomba King's Castle or other buildings were deliberately designed to not look like paper. I think they were designed to look as much like paper without affecting performance. But I can't really prove that, so I think we're at an impasse. We can not prove this without interviewing the developers.
PM64 being a "paper" game was just a way for Nintendo to market the shit graphics because Intelligent Systems couldn't into 3D graphics at the time. They didn't fully embrace the paper aspect until TTYD.

You are taking all the gags seriously, as for game play that isn't the same as being part of the plot. Now in the series Mario is filling holes in the world with confetti because it isn't real.
unironically would rather the series being dead, instead we got color splash sticker star and origami king, it would be more fun to hope for a new game without any of those existing.
Color Splash (Wii2) sold less than 20% of what Sticker Star (3ds, beginning of "RPG combat, but no EXP or point to fighting enemies).
The Origami King (Switch) sold 33% as much as Sticker Star.
Old fans aren't buying the new games because of the different ganeplay
New fans will buy any PM game that comes out. TTYD is beloved by fans, so it'll probably equivalent numbers to Sticker Star.
Dont care. The only good paper mario is the one on the wii. All the others are dogshit jrpgs trying to appeal to Americans. At least the one on the wii isnt pretending mario is some god defeating gay
The plot is that he is going after some incel while also cucking him and then at the end some over designed gay steals the incels thunder proving incels cant have real friends
That particular area of Petal Meadows was so striking to me that I specifically designed some of the backgrounds I did for the cartoon studio I work at to look like that and to see it changed so drastically completely erased any interest I had, despite some of the other areas looking quite nice.

No, some people are just able to see aesthetics and have some semblance of artistic sense. Top and bottom are like night and day to anyone with a pair of eyes.
The style of the skybox is completely different, as is pretty much all the texture work in the area.
Also claiming I have autism after I already said autism mode is redundant.
>inheriting Sticker Star/Color Splash paper-mache environments
Kind of sad about this design choice, they should’ve kept the cartoonish feel TTYD BGs had. Everything else looks decent so far.
>Top is basically the same but more formatted for HD
people see ttyd and 64 as paper characters in a low poly 3d environment, not paper characters in a paper environment. obviously the the games are MEANT to look like the top from the beginning but obviously hardware limitations from the 2000s are gonna stop them from achieving that, but the aesthetic that came from those limitations are what people liked.
This is literally the best middle ground they could've done. They get to make the backgrounds look more like paper/cardboard, and they removed the uglyass white outline on characters and replaced it with a VERY subtle 3D effect.
This confirms Paper Mario fags are a bunch of spoiled manchildren.
You remake has effort and most areas look improved upon without losing the original's essence.
Unlike another remake which looks like a unity asset grab with squished models.
Fucking kys. Kys. Kys.
TTYD was held in pretty high regard among fans. While Paper Mario 64 deserved a remaster more than TTYD did, it's already on NSO.
I'm sure every complaint they received about modern Paper Mario games mentioned one common game: TTYD.
>Nintendo knows if they make a new game
if they made a new paper mario in the style of the original 2 instead of the more recent games they would be met with the most praise Ganker has ever given them in a long fucking time. what the fuck even is this take that Gankerfags wouldn't want that.
I'm just asking if there's anything that'll make me want to buy the game, instead of just emulating it. At least the Prime remaster added new control schemes for gyro and whatnot.
why'd they skip the first game is my question, the graphical leap would of been more impressive. Did they skip it just because people who loved the first two talked about the sequel more?
there is the problem though, you need to buy an ancient game at full market value to vote with your wallet. One that you might possibly still own, I do. Sometimes Nintendo does this kind of thing at 40 bucks though, so maybe it won't be a 60 dollar game.
I own it and emulate it with mods frequently. If it were less than full market price, I'd be stoked.

this is PAPER mario and a turn based RPG, its more niche
even when they did a remaster of the mainline mario game it was 64, sunshine and galaxy all together which was indeed priced at 60 bucks IIRC
You wouldn't buy the new ones so now you get a remake and thats it.
Dead series.

I would call buying a game you don't like for loyalty of a series more autistic than abstaining from playing at all. But being angry about it, yeah that's autistic. But a series dying can be fine, things shouldn't last forever. That's how quality dips, especially when the original people aren't making it anymore. Even when they are, the idea well dries up.
>maybe IS will make more good Paper Mario games if I buy this
has this ever happened in any beneficial way ever whenever people make this statement, because I'm coming up blank and usually it just ends up as cope
And we got Megaman 11 afterwards, which is the best selling classic series Megaman to date.

The opposite has been true; poor sales, especially of remakes, have killed or nearly killed series. See: Mario & Luigi and Fire Emblem
>Mario and Luigi
That's on Alphadream (and maybe Nintendo for pushing them to do it) on doubling down on ports that no one actually wanted, you can't tell me anyone thought the BIS remake was a good idea

>you can't tell me anyone thought the BIS remake was a good idea
MAYBE if they had released it on the Switch, it might not have been 100% retarded. But yeah, Alpha Dream was dumb as fuck.
so they just turned off the entire idea of a paper-made world? or is it still supposed to be that? i really can't tell because it looks so sterile and overly-lit
remake makes the game look more like paper than the original does, but i think it looks worse off because of it. the models + the paper was a great combination over the realistic cardboard and paper textures.
Knowing Tabata's retarded ass mind, this feels like it was done to prove a point, especially by showing it right along side the OTHER Mario RPG game that's coming out much sooner. >Oh, see, it sold worse! That means people like our Mario RPG games more! >but sir what about the other game that came out a few months prior to tha- >DON'T QUESTION MY GENIUS
You might think shit like this sounds stupid but it happens in Japanese development all the time
doesn't matter, it's still gonna be on people's minds by the time it comes out, and I can guarantee you more than a few will skip out on TYD for the mentality of "well, I just got a Mario RPG game a few months ago, I don't really need this too" and that's probably by design
If it actually is that, that'd at least be a nice way of looking at it, but I'm less hopeful. Mainly because the people working on current PM have shown themselves to be exceptionally stubborn and stuck on their 'vision'.
If this leads to a remaster for the OG or even a new paper mario in this format then that'd be fucking great. I was pretty disappointed with Super and didn't finish Origami King
It's more like a gussied up port, from the looks of it. 60 dollars, but it appears they're not adding anything. Just a graphical touchup.
Damn, that's pretty cool. The graphics are fine as they were but I guess running at 720p or whatever will be better. Bet they'll cut the invisible naked peach section kek
part of this kinda shift is that games with warm colors are more easily perceived as boring by zoomies because of how your brain works
blue, cold colors wake you up.
Thats the principle anyway. I think they're beyond retarded for actually applying it in this way. It really doesn't make such a difference
It feels weirdly uncanny, almost like one of those old fan mock-ups of "[Game] if HD", but I'm not necessarily against it. Frankly, I might just buy the game to experience the new visuals alone.
You know what's weird? Literally every single screenshot of TTYD I see online is stretched, it's like nobody that cares about that game cares about the aspect ratio.
a lot of screenshots of gamecube emulation is from like a decade ago, and a lot of people just played games stretched, you will find the same thing in old melee screenshots and sm64 videos
rehashed games are for the birds. I got my dolphin emu set up and my gamecube+CRT+actual copy ready to go whenever I want. Paying for 20+ year old nintendo games is what retards do.
I have my original copy as well. Still going to pick this up because I like the look, and I get a chance to vote with my wallet in Tanabe's face. Didn't buy CS, didn't by TOK, hope this outsells both. I'll also be buying SMRPG remake, potentially twice, despite owning an original copy, a JP copy, and getting it on the WiiU.
The only issue to me is they got rid of the halftone patterns which is actually heavily apart of TTYD's art style and everywhere. Only the Black Chest guy has it.
no one actually played paper mario to look at the paper textures, the majority of the original 2 games barely even looked like paper besides the fucking characters. it's just a quirk means to an end to convey the rpgs, and i'm tired of people pretending like they actually cared about how paper paper mario looks.
Nah it definitely has a "paper" artstyle and as a result it's aged well, I'm tempted to say the remaster is redundant but it's always nice to get old games faithfully remastered so I'm not really gonna complain
it's not faithful though, at least art style wise. a lot of thigns in the original game are quite literally just not a paper aesthetic. they clearly want the new game to look more in line with how paper mario looks nowadays with shit like sticker star instead of how the old games looked with it's more 3d environments.
It's faithful in the sense that they're not making any radical changes to the story or gameplay. I agree that the old artstyle was fine and some parts of the new one don't look as nice, they've also clearly over animated some things like the stairs folding out
I'm just hoping they won't cut stuff that is "outdated" and also they'll probably try to make it more "accessible". >no naked peach >option to continue after a game over >save points for pit of 100 trials
>Gameplay improvements
MAYBE a hard mode, but unlikely >less awful backtracking
They're not touching the level design, I guarantee it. It'll still be a slog and we still won't have Spin Dash to make it slightly less terrible
having to run around keyhaul is retty annoying, and going back and forth from Doo liss' castle was kind of annoying but you're a shadow during it so that's retty cool
Nah in the last or second to last chapter you have to look for a bob omb and he travels to every location you've been to. So you have to backtrack every area basically, it's a pain
>I mean, there is only awful backtracking if you do the optional sidequests right?
Nope, it's all over the game. >Chapter 1
Go right to Petalburg, right to Schwonk Fortress, left to Petalburg, left to Hooktail Castle >Chapter 2
Go right to Flurries's house, go left to fight the Shadow Sirens, go right to the Great Tree >Chapter 4
You are required, at minimum, to go back AND forth through Twilight Trail 4 times >Chapter 5
You are required to go from the camp up the mountain to the base of Pirate's Grotto 3.5 times (only 3 if you know to grab a Coconut in advance) >Chapter 7
General White has you revisit 4 old chapters just for NPCs to tell you "lol he isn't here"
These are all MANDATORY
I forgot that there was going to be a Direct today and when I clicked this thread I genuinely, unironically believed that the top image was fan made. Under that assumption I thought it looked pretty good even if it failed to capture the charm of the original.
But this is an official Nintendo remake? How do they keep fucking this up? How do they so consistently not understand the style that they themselves made? The colours, the contrast, the comic book shading, a world that isn't all-caps LMAOPAPER, everything is wrong but only just enough to make the aesthetic noticeably worse without being able to call it outright ugly.
God fucking damnit.
I think when they do a remaster they basically just have a group of people sit down and update the assets. "? block" becomes "HD ? block" and there's not much thought put into the art direction as a whole

The game had visual jokes and moments aesthetic choices, but the first 3 games never had NPCs talking about being afraid of getting wet because DUDE PAPER or talking about getting crinkled or other comments about their physical bodies being made of paper.
Mario being able to fold up in TTYD is seen as a negative curse that's not something anyone else's bodies can normally do.
the anon is just saying the more realistic paper like visuals don't fit in the original games aesthetic where being paper was never really anything but a means to an end.

It literally did. The game is LITERALLY, as in the dictionary definition of, a pop-up storybook. It's why "shading" was shown with stippling (the dots being used on the trees and upper walls).

PM64 being a "paper" game was just a way for Nintendo to market the shit graphics because Intelligent Systems couldn't into 3D graphics at the time. They didn't fully embrace the paper aspect until TTYD.

It was a core part of the game's visuals. That's WHY we had so many gags about it and why even basic actions like going into a building or using a pipe evoked it. I agree about the use of it as narrative, but pretending it wasn't a CORE aspect of the visual design is absurd.
>The game had visual jokes and moments aesthetic choices, but the first 3 games never had NPCs talking about being afraid of getting wet because DUDE PAPER or talking about getting crinkled or other comments about their physical bodies being made of paper.
I don't know whether or not they've altered the dialogue to be DUDE PAPER LMAO, but compared to gay fan mockups of what TTYD remade could look like, we made out very well. >Mario being able to fold up in TTYD is seen as a negative curse
Only by the curse chests (who are also heroes in lore playing the part as bad guys). The only other time it's ever commented on that Mario can transform is in Pirate's Grotto when the toads get pissed that "a ship has come to save us! Oh wait, it's just a paper ship"
TTYD is a fucking comic book. Not a papercraft universe.
You should rewatch the opening cutscene to Mario Story. Even the gameplay demo shows off Mario twirling into a pipe, confetti from breaking a wall, a cutscene of a bridge being unfolded, the walls unfolding to enter a room, etc.

Anon, I....
I don't think that you understand what those people are saying. They aren't saying "there were never paper-related visual gags due to the artstyle"; they're saying "the world was not actually stated to be made of paper until Sticker Star, where dialogue explicitly mentions that npcs are made of paper and subject to paper-ish physical phenomena"
Okay, this has to be intentional combativeness. Can you please tell me when in the first three games an NPC alludes to being made of paper in dialogue?
The game had visual jokes and moments aesthetic choices, but the first 3 games never had NPCs talking about being afraid of getting wet because DUDE PAPER or talking about getting crinkled or other comments about their physical bodies being made of paper.
Mario being able to fold up in TTYD is seen as a negative curse that's not something anyone else's bodies can normally do.
It never did (or if it did, it was super minor, unlike the platformer titles they've released since then) but neither does this remake? So, what's the point of bringing it up?
I'll be honest, off the top of my head, I can only remember the opening cinematics and the Toads in Pirate's Grotto talking about Mario being a paper boat, but to be fair I have not read the story or random NPC dialogue in these games for years since I replay them so often.
The story of the remake is entirely unchanged. They aren't gonna add a bunch of dialogue talking about paper (outside of the stuff that's already there, because I'm pretty sure the curses at least mention it). So, making more of the graphics evoke the paper feeling that these visual gags evoked makes sense.
The taped in the opening was also a joke. Maybe the people who think it was a plot point since the beginning are too autistic to understand when something is a joke?
And the trees in the remake somehow are more serious than these visual gags? Like how is making more shit look like paper a problem?
>The story of the remake is entirely unchanged. >the world is supposed to be a book >but not made of paper!!!
Total retard, I'm done with this "conversation".
Now you're focusing on it as an art style, which was never the problem. I even said in the beginning it was an art style but became the plot in later games.
Then I'm not arguing with you, I'm arguing with these two people:
>It was supposed to look like real paper.
It was supposed to be a drawing of a tree in a pop-up book, not a 3D papercraft tree in a paperworld.
>the original had paper aesthetic.
no it didnt
Drawings are made of paper. I know they made it a papercraft tree and 3D, but we already had stuff like say the Goomba King's Castle that was clearly a rolled up sheet of paper (ie. 3D) in Paper Mario. It is entirely aligned. You can say it looks worse (and I honestly AGREE) but you can't pretend that it doesn't align with the central visual design of the series.
The taped in the opening was also a joke. Maybe the people who think it was a plot point since the beginning are too autistic to understand when something is a joke?
Top is how i'd want a tv series to look, bottom is how i like the game to look. Top looks really good though, and if it was an original game i wouldn't have any complaints whatsoever.
as a huge paper mario fan, this is the best thing ever and im glad it wasnt leaked. fuck all of you gays. i can't wait. it looks better than the original. you can say all you want about the paper ruining the original style but this is how its SUPPOSED to look. trees actually looking like cardboard, the dirt edges showing that they are cardboard and the grass flowing off like paper. the gamecube obviously couldn't do this. as we see with the stairs, they didn't ruin it, its just gonna be like the original. but now it actually looks like the storybook it was meant to be
I fucking hate you retards that enable all this soulless remake shit. This is why devs are shit now, all they are capable of is remake of GAME and GAME2.
If I was told to choose between TTYD HD remaster and Origami King 2 then I know which one I'd want. Cry all you like but remastering old game for new hardware is based and makes the game accessible to more people
>youtube is filled with reaction videos of people losing their shit over this >it's literally just the same game you could emulate for free on Dolphin but worse and $59.99 + tax + tip
What is wrong with tendies holy fuck

You gays always add this little lie in and hope nobody notices. You could just as easily claim "it's literally just the same game you could emulate for free on Dolphin, but $59.99 + tax + tip" and get the same message across without your obvious bias.
Anon did you look at OP's screenshot? It literally looks worse. It's like Wind Waker HD all over again, except in that one the QoL improvements at least justified it. TTYD doesn't need anything like that. It's fine as it is.

We know your favorite game nowadays is bitching on Ganker like a retard. You probably waste as many hours here complaining as you did playing games as a kid when you were less retarded.
Top would look better flat it if it weren't for the threes and the hideous save block.
Still after having rewatched the trailer like ten times it's imo a visual improvement anywhere outside of the battles, where it sadly looks pretty significantly worse.
The trees look bad. Every block from coin blocks to badge blocks to save blocks looks soulless. The glowing floor everywhere is silly. The battles look cheap and look as if they feel cheap to play, too.
Outside of that, the game is a visual upgrade.
Regardless, TTYD has timeless visuals. The most important test of this remake are not the visuals or the music, it's whether they actually improve the things which TTYD undeniably fell short on.
It's one thing to not like the Paper aesthetic. But to nitpick LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE LITTLE DETAIL that is even SLIGHTLY different in a complete 1:1 remake of the original... There really is, without exaggeration, no pleasing you. You'd complain if it was anything but an upscaled port, and even then would complain about it being nothing but an upscaled port.
i don't think anyone is nitpicking, most of the complaints have been about the aesthetic at large being more modern paper mario than old paper mario. which is completely fine, the games have vastly different art styles and people are gonna like different things
>you can't explain what you think makes it look worse
>comic-book style dot-shading gone from the trees and hills >flat trees replaced with strange folded cardboard looking abominations >soulful and stylistic clouds with swirls replaced with generic clouds that look like they were ripped off google image search >ink dot aesthetic on the grass is gone as well >stone pipe texture more washed out and less stylized >grass weirdly folds over the hill like it's made of thinly sliced cheese or some shit, instead of just looking like it's flat and the paper just folds to create the hill like the original
The remake completely butchers the aesthetic and looks even less like paper, I have no idea what you're talking about.
>Clouds look like boring clipart >Fake dithering effect on trees and far mountain is gone >Grass is a fucking 3D object now >Save box and pipe looks completely different >Dust kicked up by characters is smaller >Entire scene feels more pastel than saturated
That's all I can notice at a glance, I'm not watching the shitty trailer because this is clearly an outsourced job. That or Nintendo has lost their touch.

Hey, be a little more tolerant. Autists really do have sensitive hearing and something that grates it and gets on their nerves really will cause them great discomfort. It's actually possible that anon is autistic and that sound truly is unbearable in the long run.
Reminds me of tearaway.
i'm sad that some things changed but hopefully this'll let them know what people want.
>let them know what people want.
You still believe?
yeah like they'll see sales and won't make the same mistakes they did with super paper mario and on-wards.
The clouds also look generic compared to the bottom
also i'm not saying it's bad, but i can see why people might not like it.
Defend what? The grass is too blue and oversaturated, but otherwise looks good to me.
defend remaking a game that still looks fine
Honestly what happened to colors in general? It seems like over the years devs (even when pursuing a cartoonish style) have become allergic to sharp contrasting colors.
It's just trends
It's true in real life too. People seem to think less contrast = more mature. I hate it. It's why I love the color in Ori. That said, OP's picture isn't bad and if it all looked like that I probably wouldn't mind. Hooktail looked extremely washed out.
It's not really the contrast but the color palette because Ori tries to have a more mature artsyle in general.
Retard manchild
The lighting (that causes the loss of saturation) is meant to make it look like real papercraft artwork, while the original looks distinctly computer generated. The trees are made of visible layers for the same reason
colors were brighter because everyone had crts
3 houses is the best game ever compared to engage's dogshit designs/colors made by a literal blind artist.
Tendies are excited to play a shitty downgraded port of a 20 year old game that they can emulate right now, so I'm not surprised that they also think that 3H doesn't have muddy PS2 tier graphics
Worst take of the thread as per usual of Ganker's anything fire emblem related.

Bottom looks significantly better.
tendie bros will drone on about how art style makes up for the actual graphics at a technical level being bad and then ignore that sentiment to defend a bad remake
The only issue is that its completely unnecessary. Like with Wind Waker, Paper Mario is a game that looked fine in back then and still looks fine now.
i completely agree with you

the new graphics make no sense here since they retain the dots for the hole but not anywhere else

This isn't even bad. The worst part is that TTYD is a chud game and they should have made a remake of the original instead
disliking a sequel that improved upon the original in every imaginable way is not a personality

the same reason the silent hill remake is 2, because thats the one everyone knows more and thus they don't have to put in as much effort since the game is already sold
Congrats, you have a terrible memory.
he bing bing wahoos on ttyd, you might be confused with super paper mario
He actually did! Mario has 3 different jump voice clips, IIRC. Bowser only has 1.
>Add in voices for Mario
He doesn't know.
>its another 'retard complains about games he's never played' episode
>Is it already on the emulator thing they have, and they don't want to make it moot?
They put Link's Awakening DX there despite the remake.
MAYBE with a lot of time in between the polished graphic would have got me interested again.
its way too FUCKING long. thats the thought that stands out the most. other than that, dialogue, story, characters, areas, are all really like-able. as someone thats a fan of gamecube mario all around i like that they tied in everything. i feel like the took the original (played them back to back in order) and made it bigger so i can see how someone would prefer the original to ttyd.
>its way too FUCKING long.
You can't expect me to happily suck down shameless padding and backtracking just because "yay pirates!"
> because it has a wrestling tournament,
Which is boring as fuck and a complete cop-out. There's no actual exploration or gameplay during this entire chapter, just endless dialogue and forced battles that are piss-easy
>a ghost turning people into pigs and stealing your body
One of the better chapters, but still full of backtracking and tedium
> a train travel on multiple days with a mystery in between
Another filler chapter loaded with stupid dialogue and wandering around a confined area in lieu of actual gameplay
>a spooky demon hidden behind a door that ends up possessing Peach.
People wouldn't remember 64 for its gameplay alone, they remember it because 64 sometimes delivered (pic related)
>Which is boring as fuck and a complete cop-out. There's no actual exploration or gameplay during this entire chapter, just endless dialogue and forced battles that are piss-easy
>Nobody gives a shit
I do
>game is LE EASY
Pit of 100 trials says hi.
It's not in 64. By the way, I'm not saying 64 has bad gameplay or something. I'm saying that just because the level design is better or maybe some chapter spends less time on the story and more on the gameplay doesn't make it better because the gameplay isn't the focus and never was
It is easy, tedious too.
>Paper Mario is an adventure, not a deep RPG.
It's gays like you that gave us Sticker Star, Color Splash, and Origami King
>git gud at Superguards
>beat it before Hooktail
Sometimes I forget how iconic Lady Bow is. Literally draw a circle, give it eyelashes and an ojousama personality, and it becomes one of the best vidya girls of all time.
It shat all over the Klonoa remakes too.
i genuinely do prefer the low poly models + paper stuff over everything being super realistic paper/cardboard.
Unironically looks better tbqhwyf
top looks better. glad they're updating it
defend you using the wrong aspect ratio on your shitty dolphin playthrough? I would never
It looks fucking awesome and I'm tired of you shitposting drama queens. Please just slit your wrists already.
I really like the white jagged pixels around the characters
what a great artistic choice
>PAPER Mario ttyd
>Old version was clearly trying to emulate the feel/style of a diorama.
>Remake actually looks like a cardboard diorama and paper cut out for characters
I really don't understand how this is bad other than if you have nostalgia warping your perspective and I like both iterations.
modern Paper Mario mind broke fans so hard they now hate the paper aesthetic
the paper part of paper mario was only a western thing because mario story would sound retarded to a western audience
>but it became paper mario since ttyd
ttyd still kept the storybook aesthetic of 64 you gigaretard, it didn't have the papercraft aesthetic of stickerstar onwards
Dude, Mario Story had plenty of paper elements that go beyond storybook visually.
The visuals will look better in time, the remake is still over half a year away probably
Fucking up the smiley clouds is a travesty
>Left: Skybox seam is noticeable but is designed to feel infinitely expansive
>Right: Skybox blends in with water leaving an ambiguous feeling
This is the real crime.
You forgot to give it soul
I have a bigger issue with the shine
Now that you mention it, you're right. Why the fuck is the grass reflective? It's supposed to be grass, not glass.
tlanslation issue with japanese dezaina
They used that shitty plasticy paper like gift wrappings vs classic construction paper, literally called construction because it's for crafts like this.
honestly this is probably the disconnect the gays in this thread are having, cause original ttyd does have a more construction paper like design and the new game is super glossy and weird.
Top looks better. Don't know which one is the new one.
Jesus fuck why does everything have a reflection?
It looks so garish.
>$60 for a shittier port
It's M&L Bowser's inside story shitmake all over again
Except this time, people will defend the garden gnomery since it's on the shitch
Should've done a mix of the two styles. I like the new trees being 3d but they should've just stuck to the old tree style while making them 3d.
when will this "make remake of game except worse" trend stop?
so fucking tired of it.
Never.
it's literally like pumping out AI slop with no effort put into it. this is literally worse than the original.
The game already looked great they could have just re-released it for the switch
If top was the original one Ganker would be defending it, take off the nostalgia googles
If top was the original, TTYD would never become a childhood defining hit.
cope and seethe
Yes, we know that's all Nintendies do, keep seething
The fact that it's even a debate which is better is proof the game didn't need to be remade. At least not like this.
If top was made by a youtuber using Unreal Engine all of Gankerintendo would be shitting on it, but because it's made by lord Ninty then it's soulful and good
>If top was made by a youtuber using Unreal Engine all of Gankerintendo would be shitting on it
that's how all remakes are
>that fucking small hint of a white outline
Now that's just downright pathetic and petty. Just let it go holy shit
Kek the entire perspective is fucked
Can't unsee it either
Kensuke Tanabe is a living parody of a Nintendo developer
Top looks pretty good honestly.
Just make the grass a bit darker maybe.
>dotted pattern gone
yep I'm thinking fucking soull*ss
Zoom in
to what
The top half of the OP image, you numbskull
there are no dotted patterns you gay moron bitch, there are none
Are you actually blind?
where are these in the top image retardo, please point them out for me
Went through and circled them all for you
god you're fucking stupid. I watched that whole conversation unfold thinking 'he can't possibly be conflating the comic pop-art shading with the literal dots randomly scattered around the scenery, he can't be that fucking retarded to think its the same there has to be something else' and lo and behold how fucking wrong I am
this isn't moving the goalpost this is having a very set goal and you running over and dunking the ball in a trashcan like it was the same fucking thing
They're clearly intended to be the same thing
>phoneposter
you're a gayer retard than I thought
You're actually retarded holy shit, he's talking about the ones on the trees Nintendofags truly are retarded why did i like this shit company
Ooohhhh. He never specified trees so I was looking at the other dotted pattern in the image. I'll accept I was retarded. Thanks for actually pointing out what he was referring to.
How did you get Mario to go under the ground? Is there a secret item down there???
okay nintendo youre getting warmer now put the battle system from this remake into a new game
Thousand Year Door is getting a rerelease?
Grass is too blue but otherwise it looks fine.
>Clouds look like boring clipart
>Fake dithering effect on trees and far mountain is gone
>Grass is a fucking 3D object now
>Save box and pipe looks completely different
>Dust kicked up by characters is smaller
>Entire scene feels more pastel than saturated
That's all I can notice at a glance, I'm not watching the shitty trailer because this is clearly an outsourced job. That or Nintendo has lost their touch.
look like boring clipart
Slightly different. And both versions of each look good.
>>Dust kicked up by characters is smaller
It's fading away. Watch the trailer, it's the same maximum size.
scene feels more pastel than saturated
Looks more like paper and cardboard, and has real lighting rather than just flat colors.
have a nice day gay not buying the remake LOL
>Wahhhhhh you j-just hate change!!! INCEL
Yes I do now suck my cock motherfucker
Did you respond to the wrong post?
I think he had a schizo break
>Let's drop artistic effects because we have Real™ lighting now
Modern gaymen...
I think that if they simply 1-to-1 remade the visual style as well there would be literally no point to a remake. Just putting the original in HD? It's pretty cool to see the pop-up book diorama visual style more fully realized. That said, if you don't like the new look, just play the original.
i mean it worked for wind waker
I've played the original many times over, just like WW, so the changed visuals will be a hard sell, but I'm currently liking it more than WWHD's changes.
you are GENUINELY trolling if you think WWHD is that much visually different from WW as opposed to the new ttyd and it's original.
You may need to reread my post, anon.
I did. It doesn't look worse to me. And you can't explain what you think makes it look worse because your only thoughts are "new bad".
>you can't explain what you think makes it look worse
>comic-book style dot-shading gone from the trees and hills
>flat trees replaced with strange folded cardboard looking abominations
>soulful and stylistic clouds with swirls replaced with generic clouds that look like they were ripped off google image search
>ink dot aesthetic on the grass is gone as well
>stone pipe texture more washed out and less stylized
>grass weirdly folds over the hill like it's made of thinly sliced cheese or some shit, instead of just looking like it's flat and the paper just folds to create the hill like the original
The remake completely butchers the aesthetic and looks even less like paper, I have no idea what you're talking about.
see
It doesn't look perfect, yeah. I fucking hate the colors and the lighting. But I'm not gonna pretend Mario Story never REALLY had a paper component to it like some people say.
no one is saying PAPER mario never had a PAPER component, just that a lot of paper mario quite deliberately just did not look like paper in conjunction to that paper aesthetic
I really don't think that say, Goomba King's Castle or other buildings were deliberately designed to not look like paper. I think they were designed to look as much like paper without affecting performance. But I can't really prove that, so I think we're at an impasse. We can not prove this without interviewing the developers.
It wasn't just marketing.
>killing intentional artistic decisions like the colors and fucking halftone shading because WAOOW LOOK AT THE REALISTIC GRAFIX
never tell me zoomers aren't soulless golems without a single artistic bone in their body again
youre in a thread with people that justify every change with
>it's fine it looks like a popup book
when the original game didn't even go that hard on that. i refuse to believe Nintendo decided to make some straight up 3d models for these games because of "hardware limitations" that couldn't make more paper things. theres a crap ton of both and now the remake goes for the sticker star and later games look where everything is ACTUALLY paper and cardboard.

upper looks better
which is the original? i never played it
Is this just Nintendo subtly testing the waters to see if there is interest in 'real' Paper Mario games again? Not that that interest ever left in the first place.
Yes, that's 100% it. And it will sell like hotcakes because
(I will also buy it)
>subtly
It's painfully obvious they want to see if Mario RPGs sell in general, otherwise we wouldn't have both this and SMRPG.
Absolutely this, so if you people do give a shit, guess you'll have to buy them.
im glad its different. the orignal game already exists. this will be a treat for new and old playings alike unless ur an old crochety person who doesnt like anything new
Having literal zero nostalgia for the GameCube I feel the new one looks better. It looks more like paper diorama
You fucking gays will never ever be goddamn content with anything in your fucking lives
Sorry for having standards.
>oh my onions is-is that a person who has standards? oh my hecking yikes tyrone wont like this!!!

I'm content with just playing the original instead of slurping up every slop that I see
You're playing the exact same game. Enjoy your dead series.
Don't mind if I do
No new games ever for this garbage series and its autistic female like fans.
>you will never be content
>I am content
>heh well...yeah you better enjoy it, sucker!
Okay
Enjoy no new entries because you're an autistic moron.
>no new entries
There was a new entry 3 years ago.
And you caused it to fail. Because you're a little gay who can't handle paper artstyle.
I don't know who you think I am, but I never said or did that.
I own TYYD and Origami King.
The game play is shit now. Leaning into the paper shit was gay as fuck, but that wouldn't be the deal breaker.
>Leaning into the paper shit was gay as fuck
Wait until you hear about the curses in TTYD...
Imagine being this retarded
Look, I really need you replay like the fucking prologue of the first Mario Story on the N64. Because even fucking then, it was still doing loads of paper shit.
>two paper references
>same as the ENTIRE WORLD being paper
Retard
It isn't just two, dude. There's LOADS. Like everywhere. Yes, graphically you couldn't tell a lot of the time outside of the character models, but there were tons of little references. Especially in cutscenes.
It's actually 2 vs 2000
the vast majority of the original game does not look like paper
>paper mario
>leaning into the paper shit was gay
This is why you don't get new games.
unironically the vast majority of people like paper mario because it's a good rpg not because it's paper mario.
The first three weren't "Mario is not real and made of Paper," it was just the artstyle. Did you play the newer games? Also, series need death sometimes.
People say this shit, but the very first game had a Goomba peel himself off a sign to fight you and Mario float down after falling off a balcony, like a sheet of paper.
Those were one off gags, not plot points. But I'm sure a lot of people over look them for their arguments that's true. I'd say the paper thing only became part of the plot in Color Splash onwards.
I mean, the TTYD remake isn't really going to use it as part of the plot either.
Yes, due to graphical limitations. But shit like Goomba King's castle tower unfolding into a bridge clearly meant that they intended for it to at least evoke the idea of paper crafts.
>evoke
Here's the thing.
TTYD is a fucking comic book. Not a papercraft universe.
bro what? There's literlaly popup book type stuff all over
the comic dots are just a shading technique they stylized for the artstyle. I dont mind thta going away because they can do actual high fidelity shading now
64 still had all sorts of paper and craft scenes for environments and puzzles
Not to mention Kammy literally tapes Bowser into the story
You are taking all the gags seriously, as for game play that isn't the same as being part of the plot. Now in the series Mario is filling holes in the world with confetti because it isn't real.
unironically would rather the series being dead, instead we got color splash sticker star and origami king, it would be more fun to hope for a new game without any of those existing.
I know, it's a problem
That's not true, I still own my original copy and I'm perfectly happy with that.

What made them actually go an remake TTYD. Did people hate the more recent games that bad?
Why can't Mario defeat a god? Bitch
Because hes not a gay gay
>doesn't demand intercourse from peach, is satisfied with only cake
Yeah he's a fag
Cake is symbolism, he's eating her ass every time he saves her
>At least the one on the wii isnt pretending mario is some god defeating gay
That's literally the entire plot. Did you play the game?
The plot is that he is going after some incel while also cucking him and then at the end some over designed gay steals the incels thunder proving incels cant have real friends
He defeats the ultimate evil being who was going who was going to destroy all dimensions, because he was "the chosen hero of destiny" in a book.
And he did it while running and jumping outside of turn based combat dumb shitskin
That makes me wrong, how?
That's not the plot of SPM at all. No gods were defeated, the only thing that was stomped was a Marx-tier jester.
Did they remove the unique toad outfits?
No. They even added a new Toad.
Why is he so smug?
The characters look so out of place and don't blend in with the background at all anymore. So bizarre.
I’m kind of disappointed…I was expecting a sticker star remaster
That particular area of Petal Meadows was so striking to me that I specifically designed some of the backgrounds I did for the cartoon studio I work at to look like that and to see it changed so drastically completely erased any interest I had, despite some of the other areas looking quite nice.
Autism mode activated.
Also the voices are quite bad and distracting.
>the voices are quite bad and distracting
You people really don't play the games you bitch about.
What are you talking about? The original game had a generic text sound.
How can I play a game that isn't even out yet moron
The original had all those voice clips, you fucking gay.
It had no voice clips.
Yes it did, you third-world chimp.
?feature=shared
it absolutely didnt you stupid moron
It did, you fucking subhuman.
?feature=shared
You DO realize the new version uses completely DIFFERENT voice clips and that's the issue right?
Right anon?
You did actually watch the trailer and realize I'm commenting on the NEW voice clips sounding bad, RIGHT anon?
And I'm not saying the original voice clips are bad or don't exist, RIGHT ANON?
>new version uses completely DIFFERENT voice clips
Mario and Bowser are literally using the same voice clips from the original. Do you mean the new dialogue sounds for the cast?
Sorry voice clips wasn't the right term.
The chittering dialogue noises that play over text.
It should have been obvious what I mean when I'm discussing what's been changed, not what stayed the same.
>It should have been obvious what I mean
Not really considering there are people ITT who insisted Mario didn't wahoo originally. That complaint I do get. I imagine some being more grating than others.
I suppose the autism tints all comments in this thread.
But yeah, Luigi sounds pretty jarring.
>to see it changed so drastically

>inheriting Sticker Star/Color Splash paper-mache environments
Kind of sad about this design choice, they should’ve kept the cartoonish feel TTYD BGs had. Everything else looks decent so far.
>they should’ve kept the cartoonish feel TTYD BGs had
What the fuck are you talking about? Top is basically the same but more formatted for HD.
It looks more like a diorama than a cartoon(not necessarily a bad thing).
A halftone effect doesn't immediately scream "paper" for most people.
There's a white outline?
Later entries in the series have them.
God it’s fucking ugly
Yeah I really dislike it as well.
I don't like the games apeing the DUDE PAPER LMAO angle so hard.
they look like redbubble stickers
It made sense for the 3DS' incredibly small screen, but keeping it up for 2 more games was nonsense.
Funny you'd say that, because Stickershit didn't actually have them.
It was added in Colour Splash ad onwards.
Fuck me, you're right
The reason people think it was added in Sticker Star is because of the stickers themselves.
Yeah, easy enough to think it was for the exact reason you listed though.
I mean, they still have the white outline. It is just a lot smaller. Whoever cut the new TTYD had a better handle on the scissors.
clever and underrated
This confirms Paper Mario fags are a bunch of spoiled manchildren.
You remake has effort and most areas look improved upon without losing the original's essence.
Unlike another remake which looks like a unity asset grab with squished models.
Fucking kys. Kys. Kys.
So why are they doing this? What I mean is, why skip the original paper mario? Why this game? It just feel strange, also is this a remaster or remake?
>is this a remaster or remake
What's the difference?
Original paper Mario is nso
This is clearly a remaster
Shit I mean remake
TTYD was held in pretty high regard among fans. While Paper Mario 64 deserved a remaster more than TTYD did, it's already on NSO.
I'm sure every complaint they received about modern Paper Mario games mentioned one common game: TTYD.
>why skip the original paper mario?
they make more money on keeping it on switch online
oh duh, I'm not that anon but I overlooked that point because I don't have that shit.
So is there anything actually justifying this 60 dollar "remake" or "remaster" or whatever this glorified port is gonna be?
Nintendo knows if they make a new game people in this thread will hate it no matter what and it won't sell.
Dead series.
Are you going to act like a victim the whole thread? Is this an RP thing?
Dead series. Nintendo can't innovate on paper artstyle that's 20 years due for it because you're an autistic gay.
Enjoy your new game... oh wait
Are you done?
You have to be 18+ to post here.
Report and move on.
Teleport yourself back to a ten year old you who wasn't such a gay complaining that paper mario looked too paper.
Don't own a time machine to change your own terrible tastes?
The series stays dead then.
You're not even talking to the same guy, amigo. Could not care less about muh paper artstyle. What matters more is if they're adding any new content.
You asked what could change. The answer is you.
Series is dead because it's the most autistic fanbase in any nintendo game.
"you're autistic", says insufferable autistic nintendo gay (You).
why'd they skip the first game is my question, the graphical leap would of been more impressive. Did they skip it just because people who loved the first two talked about the sequel more?
I don't think 64 needs a graphical overhaul, it works as is for it's storybook feeling.
Neither needed it, I'm just talking about a noticeable difference. Why wouldn't you just play PM2 on Dolphin, they are barely different.
>Why wouldn't you just play PM2 on Dolphin
Because maybe IS will make more good Paper Mario games if I buy this
there is the problem though, you need to buy an ancient game at full market value to vote with your wallet. One that you might possibly still own, I do. Sometimes Nintendo does this kind of thing at 40 bucks though, so maybe it won't be a 60 dollar game.
I own it and emulate it with mods frequently. If it were less than full market price, I'd be stoked.
Expect a minimum 40 dollar price tag, if we're going by Prime remaster's precedent. Though since this is Mario, aka a more lucrative franchise, we could indeed expect 60 bucks.
it will 100% be $60
You seem pretty certain, does your dad work at nintendo? The physical release for pikmin 1 + 2 is only 40 bucks as well
Pikmin doesn't have the sheer selling power of Mario.
this is PAPER mario and a turn based RPG, its more niche
even when they did a remaster of the mainline mario game it was 64, sunshine and galaxy all together which was indeed priced at 60 bucks IIRC
You wouldn't buy the new ones so now you get a remake and thats it.
Dead series.
Because of autistic fans.
why are you pretending like the last 3 games have been the most godawful shit known to man
havent*
nta but yeah because the new games were shit.
>NOOOOOO MAKE GAMES I LIKE BUT I WILL MAKE SURE TO PIRATE THEM
The reason why games and movies pander to trannies and woke crowds now.
>maybe IS will make more good Paper Mario games if I buy this
has this ever happened in any beneficial way ever whenever people make this statement, because I'm coming up blank and usually it just ends up as cope
We got Megaman 10 after 9 did well?
And we got Megaman 11 afterwards, which is the best selling classic series Megaman to date.
Well, that was like two decades later. And we still don't have 12.
>two decades later
>2010 was 20 years ago
WHERE HAS TIME GONE
>Megaman 10: 2010
>Megaman 11: 2018
11 only exists because someone dared to step up to the plate after Inafune left, let's not attribute that to 10's success
The opposite has been true; poor sales, especially of remakes, have killed or nearly killed series. See: Mario & Luigi and Fire Emblem
when will this (remake, but worse) trend stop? there has been one fucking remake that wasn't shit and it was metroid prime.
so they just turned off the entire idea of a paper-made world? or is it still supposed to be that? i really can't tell because it looks so sterile and overly-lit
remake makes the game look more like paper than the original does, but i think it looks worse off because of it. the models + the paper was a great combination over the realistic cardboard and paper textures.
Both pictures are very clearly a paper artstylle.
This autistic bitching is exactly why this series is dead.
i thought the bottom was just normal switch graphics to be honest
heh
Knowing Tabata's retarded ass mind, this feels like it was done to prove a point, especially by showing it right along side the OTHER Mario RPG game that's coming out much sooner.
>Oh, see, it sold worse! That means people like our Mario RPG games more!
>but sir what about the other game that came out a few months prior to tha-
>DON'T QUESTION MY GENIUS
You might think shit like this sounds stupid but it happens in Japanese development all the time
You act like these games are releasing a month next to eachother. TTYDR is pretty much going to be a late-spring/Summer title.
doesn't matter, it's still gonna be on people's minds by the time it comes out, and I can guarantee you more than a few will skip out on TYD for the mentality of "well, I just got a Mario RPG game a few months ago, I don't really need this too" and that's probably by design
i'm seeing this as a way for nintendo to gauge interest in older rpg mechanics by reintroducing these old games that use those things
Wait are they making a TTYD remaster? Unrionically one of my favourite games ever, I've beat it like 10 times
Yes. Here's the trailer: https://youtu.be/8Ume5pSIcKE?si=8_O48wfnK7YTLanX
Damn, that's pretty cool. The graphics are fine as they were but I guess running at 720p or whatever will be better. Bet they'll cut the invisible naked peach section kek
It's more like a gussied up port, from the looks of it. 60 dollars, but it appears they're not adding anything. Just a graphical touchup.
>they're not adding anything
Good. I don't want them to fuck with it too much.
There's a new NPC in Rogueport (Toad with a purple cap), so who knows if they decide to add more.
Give us Luigi's story as a side story, cowards
They did have to remake the whole damn thing, presumably. But yeah, for the end user, it is just graphics.
Why is grass always teal in new games?
Artists don't go outside anymore
>unironically thinks top is better
lmao
TOP is my childhood. I love it and it will always have a special place in my heart.
That said it is better. You didn't expect me to change my opinion in the next sentence, did ya?
part of this kinda shift is that games with warm colors are more easily perceived as boring by zoomies because of how your brain works
blue, cold colors wake you up.
Thats the principle anyway. I think they're beyond retarded for actually applying it in this way. It really doesn't make such a difference
The voices are unpleasant to listen to.
It feels weirdly uncanny, almost like one of those old fan mock-ups of "[Game] if HD", but I'm not necessarily against it. Frankly, I might just buy the game to experience the new visuals alone.
Thank you. I couldn't put my finger on why the top looked better, but also jarring at the same time. That was a good way of putting it.
You know what's weird? Literally every single screenshot of TTYD I see online is stretched, it's like nobody that cares about that game cares about the aspect ratio.
a lot of screenshots of gamecube emulation is from like a decade ago, and a lot of people just played games stretched, you will find the same thing in old melee screenshots and sm64 videos
>sm64
idk why i put that there but honestly emulation back then just had everyone stretching their games i dont fucking know why
I think it looks cool other than it's slighty washed out
rehashed games are for the birds.
Not sure which is which but top is better
The Banjo-Kazooie-esque speech sounds make me sick. It's made even worse by how I actually really liked the text sound of the original game.
colors in the new one are weird. feels washed out, overly bright. and not just in this pic
The only issue to me is they got rid of the halftone patterns which is actually heavily apart of TTYD's art style and everywhere. Only the Black Chest guy has it.
will they dare to keep this and the shower moment as well?
no one actually played paper mario to look at the paper textures, the majority of the original 2 games barely even looked like paper besides the fucking characters. it's just a quirk means to an end to convey the rpgs, and i'm tired of people pretending like they actually cared about how paper paper mario looks.
I agree that the old artstyle was fine and some parts of the new one don't look as nice, they've also clearly over animated some things like the stairs folding out
oh yeah i don't disagree that as a game it's most likely gonna be faithful i mean theres no much to change anyways about that.
I'm just hoping they won't cut stuff that is "outdated" and also they'll probably try to make it more "accessible".
>no naked peach
>option to continue after a game over
>save points for pit of 100 trials
I thought it was cool.
And another example of it being a joke. The TV commercial was like that too, Peach was being lowered into a shredder. That was good.
You think there will be gameplay improvements and less awful backtracking?
>Gameplay improvements
MAYBE a hard mode, but unlikely
>less awful backtracking
They're not touching the level design, I guarantee it. It'll still be a slog and we still won't have Spin Dash to make it slightly less terrible
I mean, there is only awful backtracking if you do the optional sidequests right? That was annoying as fuck, ngl.
having to run around keyhaul is retty annoying, and going back and forth from Doo liss' castle was kind of annoying but you're a shadow during it so that's retty cool
Nah in the last or second to last chapter you have to look for a bob omb and he travels to every location you've been to. So you have to backtrack every area basically, it's a pain
No, repeated backtracking was an unavoidable part of chapters 4 and 5.
>I mean, there is only awful backtracking if you do the optional sidequests right?
Nope, it's all over the game.
>Chapter 1
Go right to Petalburg, right to Schwonk Fortress, left to Petalburg, left to Hooktail Castle
>Chapter 2
Go right to Flurries's house, go left to fight the Shadow Sirens, go right to the Great Tree
>Chapter 4
You are required, at minimum, to go back AND forth through Twilight Trail 4 times
>Chapter 5
You are required to go from the camp up the mountain to the base of Pirate's Grotto 3.5 times (only 3 if you know to grab a Coconut in advance)
>Chapter 7
Considering it was called Mario Story in Japan, outside of a few joke and marketing acting like "IT WAS THERE ALL ALONG" is objectively wrong.
>Called Mario Story
>He drops like Paper after Goompa's Veranda drops
>He drops like Paper after falling for the Koopa Bros dropping floor trap
>TTYD has paper powers
Anon, I....
yeah, when I played TTYD I thought added those powers was gay.
>outside of a few joke
The game had visual jokes and moments aesthetic choices, but the first 3 games never had NPCs talking about being afraid of getting wet because DUDE PAPER or talking about getting crinkled or other comments about their physical bodies being made of paper.
Mario being able to fold up in TTYD is seen as a negative curse that's not something anyone else's bodies can normally do.
So you think they're going to add a bunch of paper-related dialogue now or something? Why?
the anon is just saying the more realistic paper like visuals don't fit in the original games aesthetic where being paper was never really anything but a means to an end.
The original had paper aesthetic. The news version has paper aesthetic done slightly better. What's the fucking issue?
It doesn't look as nice obviously.
>the original had paper aesthetic.
no it didnt
It literally did. The game is LITERALLY, as in the dictionary definition of, a pop-up storybook. It's why "shading" was shown with stippling (the dots being used on the trees and upper walls).
you are just refusing to read any post.
>It's why "shading" was shown with stippling (the dots being used on the trees and upper walls).
This was never used in PM64
I didn't say it was. And 64 was even more of a fucking paper/book world.
PM64 being a "paper" game was just a way for Nintendo to market the shit graphics because Intelligent Systems couldn't into 3D graphics at the time. They didn't fully embrace the paper aspect until TTYD.
>They didn't fully embrace the paper aspect until TTYD.
You clearly didn't play 64, or haven't in many, many years.
its literally visible in the op pic
PM64 is not the OP. That's TTYD.
Literally not the right game.
Wait did they remake PM64? Or did they skip it?
They're remaking TTYD, dongus.
Maybe some time down the line. TTYD is more popular so they went with the safe bet.
the originals very clearly did not make everything paper though you can look at many environments in 64 and ttyd which had just regular 3d models that could have just as easily been paper. like other textures. especially in indoor areas
It was a core part of the game's visuals. That's WHY we had so many gags about it and why even basic actions like going into a building or using a pipe evoked it. I agree about the use of it as narrative, but pretending it wasn't a CORE aspect of the visual design is absurd.
No, why do you even think that.
You should rewatch the opening cutscene to Mario Story. Even the gameplay demo shows off Mario twirling into a pipe, confetti from breaking a wall, a cutscene of a bridge being unfolded, the walls unfolding to enter a room, etc.
The opening cinematics literally show that these take place in a book. Everything was always made out of paper, you buffoon.
Okay, this has to be intentional combativeness. Can you please tell me when in the first three games an NPC alludes to being made of paper in dialogue?
And the trees in the remake somehow are more serious than these visual gags? Like how is making more shit look like paper a problem?
>The story of the remake is entirely unchanged. They aren't gonna add a bunch of dialogue talking about paper (outside of the stuff that's already there, because I'm pretty sure the curses at least mention it). So, making more of the graphics evoke the paper feeling that these visual gags evoked makes sense.
Okay? I wasn't talking about that.
Other people are though. Look at this guy and half this fucking thread:
It was supposed to look like real paper.
>It was supposed to look like real paper.
It was supposed to be a drawing of a tree in a pop-up book, not a 3D papercraft tree in a paperworld.
>the world is supposed to be a book
>but not made of paper!!!
Total retard, I'm done with this "conversation".
Now you're focusing on it as an art style, which was never the problem. I even said in the beginning it was an art style but became the plot in later games.
Then I'm not arguing with you, I'm arguing with these two people:
Drawings are made of paper. I know they made it a papercraft tree and 3D, but we already had stuff like say the Goomba King's Castle that was clearly a rolled up sheet of paper (ie. 3D) in Paper Mario. It is entirely aligned. You can say it looks worse (and I honestly AGREE) but you can't pretend that it doesn't align with the central visual design of the series.
The taped in the opening was also a joke. Maybe the people who think it was a plot point since the beginning are too autistic to understand when something is a joke?
anon are you autistic or what
Which is the original?
how much is my copy of TTYD going to be dropping in value after this shit comes out
>Mario doesn’t cast a shadow anymore
Did he… did he die?
I've never played this game so I can objectively say without nostalgia goggles that the top image looks better.
Top is how i'd want a tv series to look, bottom is how i like the game to look. Top looks really good though, and if it was an original game i wouldn't have any complaints whatsoever.
as a huge paper mario fan, this is the best thing ever and im glad it wasnt leaked. fuck all of you gays. i can't wait. it looks better than the original. you can say all you want about the paper ruining the original style but this is how its SUPPOSED to look. trees actually looking like cardboard, the dirt edges showing that they are cardboard and the grass flowing off like paper. the gamecube obviously couldn't do this. as we see with the stairs, they didn't ruin it, its just gonna be like the original. but now it actually looks like the storybook it was meant to be
as a huge paper mario fan, I think you're gay and black
Top would look better if it just had more vibrant colors and a deeper color contrast.
Is this another old good new bad thread
Is it really just a GCbaby thing because it really does feel like that
I fucking hate you retards that enable all this soulless remake shit. This is why devs are shit now, all they are capable of is remake of GAME and GAME2.
Except Fromsoft and Larian.
Yeah, everyone should have bought Color Splash!!!
ah so lets do soulless remakes of old games till the year 2050! no new games! even fucking mario RPG looks like slop.
If I was told to choose between TTYD HD remaster and Origami King 2 then I know which one I'd want. Cry all you like but remastering old game for new hardware is based and makes the game accessible to more people
I don't care about accessibility. Also, have fun when the localization team ruins the text. And makes the "boy dressed like a girl" into a chud.
i mean judging by some of the posts in this thread yeah i think some people unironically think like this.
>youtube is filled with reaction videos of people losing their shit over this
>it's literally just the same game you could emulate for free on Dolphin but worse and $59.99 + tax + tip
What is wrong with tendies holy fuck
>he says as he pays for a rental on Steam
>implying every game isn't free on PC
>but worse
You gays always add this little lie in and hope nobody notices. You could just as easily claim "it's literally just the same game you could emulate for free on Dolphin, but $59.99 + tax + tip" and get the same message across without your obvious bias.
Anon did you look at OP's screenshot? It literally looks worse. It's like Wind Waker HD all over again, except in that one the QoL improvements at least justified it. TTYD doesn't need anything like that. It's fine as it is.
I mean, they added the ability to look at the tattle logbook from battle. Maybe they'll add more.
See
You think you are smart but you are in fact the biggest retard around. The "dumb" crowd actually buys shit and keeps getting stuff they like while you get jack shit and waste your time complaining about those "dumb" people instead of actually getting to enjoy stuff you like, because it no longer gets made.
Barf
>Cute drawn tree turns into a papecraft abomination.
I fucking hate modern paper Mario so much is unreal. Don't give me "it's paper", it was fucking 2d you morons! It wasn't supposed to look like real paper.
>hyping over a remake than a complete original project
This why your favorite franchises keep fucking regressing idiots.
I want this series to regress. If we get TTYD 2 out of this I'll consider not killing myself
>not buying this so we won’t get disasters like Color Splash or TOK again
Vote with your wallet gay
This remake is actually a good thing this time. Nintendo has to be reminded on how to make fun games again. Sometimes the only way to go forward is to go backward.
i feel like nintendo more than any other companies have people saying this about any fucking game regardless if it's a remake or not or good or bad
See
We know your favorite game nowadays is bitching on Ganker like a retard. You probably waste as many hours here complaining as you did playing games as a kid when you were less retarded.
Ok we can agree that the mandate is for sure dead right?
Defense:
Regardless of the quality of the remake, the amount of Goombella porn will increase.
We should play color splash to celebrate
>another episode of aspies cherry picking a handful of nitpicks to whats otherwise a fine remake
you fags complained about the metroid prime remake
>TTYD remake happens
>Ganker confirms it never even played
the original game they fellated the fuck out of
many such cases
Top would look better flat it if it weren't for the threes and the hideous save block.
Still after having rewatched the trailer like ten times it's imo a visual improvement anywhere outside of the battles, where it sadly looks pretty significantly worse.
I figured someone wouldn't like the save block, but I don't get why. Like of all the things to get caught up on.
It's smaller and without color, like comparing an old company logo to a modern one.
I don't care about the trees, but what the fuck would they change these guys up?
umm erm everything was paper so they had to be changed to be MORE paper
it looks like a popup book whats the issue?
>tranime avatar
He’s an autistic chud they have many problems
I'm used to them looking like they looked like I'm SMW
They look good to me. I genuinely don't like the way the trees look (and I'm arguing that paper was always a big part of this series).
Not that bad of a change honestly, it fits with the environment
>yellow grass is a bunch of little patches together instead of big fluffy flat patches
y thou
for that thread that just died
They should change the name Paper Mario to Labo Mario because everything is made of cardboard now. Disgusting
Why is Ganker so autistic with remakes?.
OLD GOOD
NEW BAD
Yes.
Being an autistic gay is not fine
>i don't think anyone is nitpicking
Most of these compaints are going over every little design choice and acting like someone killed their cat
i don't think you and i have been reading the same thread
you seem upset?
My good sir...
>think it looks worse but don't point out specific details
>wow so you can't even name a single part of the aesthetic that is worse sounds your just a shitposter OLD GOOD NEW BAD amirite lmao retard
>think it looks worse and point out specific details
>yeah but if i look at each individual part of your criticism individually i can pretend they're nothing but nitpicks and in no way representative of a change in overall style oops look your complaint is now illegitimate and i win again sorry :^)
kys
but anon, it's cool to hate ttydfags because all they want is the same game and they just can't let go of the past because my favorite youtuber said so!
>NOOO THEY DID THEIR BEST
don't care looks worse
original looks worse and it’s not even close
This the original looks like putrid dogshit, glad they're fixing it with the remake
uhhh yea I'm gonna have to disagree with you there pal
>let me zoom in real close
damn you really proved your point sis
No no, she did. I get what she's saying now. This one's a good point.
Saying that the dialogue 'voices' sound bad is not a nitpik.
That's something you will be hearing constantly, for the entire game.
>BUT MUH AUTISTIC BABBY EARS
seek help
0/10
>AIIIEIEEEE OWOWWOOW MUH EARS PLEES I HAVE THE TISM MAKE EAR HURTY!
Hey, be a little more tolerant. Autists really do have sensitive hearing and something that grates it and gets on their nerves really will cause them great discomfort. It's actually possible that anon is autistic and that sound truly is unbearable in the long run.
Autists need to be executed
whats the problem
There literally is no problem.
