What is Denuvo anyway? I keep hearing about it but I'm not exactly sure what it is or what it does.

Actually it isn't. Denuvo is anti-tamper, it just protects the actual drm(like steamworks) from being modified.

Making it hard to crack presents a challenge that people will want to take up for bragging rights. Making it extremely tedious makes it so most people don't want to go through the effort to do it in the first place because it's easier to pay $60 than waste 20 hours unless you're a turbo neet. You need to be incredibly autistic to find it enjoyable so that just leaves people doing it for money, and taking money leaves you open to lawsuits so most people don't want to frick with that.

Some got hired by other companies or Denuvo themselves while others are trying to crack the PS5 instead. A lot of good progress has been made actually, they've got kernel access they just have to get through the hypervisor and it's jailbroken.
It's pretty common for any big company to pay out bounties if people find vulnerabilities these days too, so getting $500 for cracking a game is pretty shit when you can get $50k(this is the actual number) from Sony for finding a critical exploit.
