it had such poor player retention blizzard cancelled an expansion and made the one expansion they did release try and cater to all the people blizzard was opening mocking leading up to release.
The guys who made d3 were total hacks that had no understanding of what diablo good. They have interviews where they talk about past diablo games and they literally do not get it. One of the lead devs even said that diablo 3 was too complex for his liking on release.
I bought D2R and then I realized that all the new stuff is in ladder and that Blizzard revealed that they'll never bring the new stuff from ladder into the old D2 non-ladder characters even once it finishes.
I've heard this lately, but I wonder if D3 was so deep in the hole because the initial development took so fricking long. After RoS the game wasn't so bad, they could have easily kept churning out expansions and the game actually sold incredibly well.

The base game sold well, on name alone. No one bought the expansions, and after 4 months Diablo 2 had more active players (including bots) than Diablo 3
morhaime himself said they killed the d3 expac because it didn't have mtx revenue like hearthstone, hots, and the asian version of d3 which had a cash shop at the time. they weren't interested in making traditional expansions anymore.
I unironically wish they'd give the RMAH another try and just not frick it up this time. I'd love the chance to be able to make some money while I played. The problem with D3 was that they balanced loot drops around the RMAH and gear was required to do the highest difficulty, which happened to be where the loot dropped - it created a circular problem where players were forced to use the AH, ie Bliz got too greedy. Just strike a balance and then you wouldn't have to do this gay battlepass shit.
I have a job, but I'm going to play the game. Why not be able to make money while I do it? I made a few hundred bucks in D3 and it paid for the abomination that it started out as and the expansion that (somewhat) redeemed it.
