I play retail since it went dirt cheap during the pandemic and the playerbase shot up for a while. Now I've invested enough time that I'm 70 and pretty deep into it so I'm sticking with that. I ended up in a linkshell too.
It’s not it’s a lot of fun and it’s completely unique as an mmo apart from EverQuest. It’s basically a classic JRPG in mmo form completely different from 14. 14 is just a shitty wow clone. what annoys me about 14 is the retards that say it’s a JRPG.
Anyway downsides of private servers Is >low population >heavy on the drama >most missions (story) don’t work
Pros >much more focus on party play at low levels >free >classic -like experience
Retail
Pros >can solo up til 99 (endgame) >trusts -npc party members >can stay at 75 cap if you don’t like 99 >most missions can be done solo not all though >can play though over 20 years of expansions
>could never play it back in the day for various reasons >get around to trying it out a couple years ago >game is extremely cool >game is also extremely depressing because there's nobody anywhere except teleport crystals near vendors and the auction house >eventually fall off because i hadn't exchanged so much as mutual greetings with another player in 120 hours
It's a shame the game turned out this way, yeah it was out of necessity but they caused it to happen. What they've ended up with is an incredibly deep endgame setup that sees most people delve in so far that they have no reason to talk to anyone outside of their tiny window of acquaintances or people on the same tier as them content wise.

This was the problem with xi it was great if you had the time back then but now modern retail even with all its faults is much. My biggest issue with was the waiting around semi-afk.
To be fair retail is still a fun experience if you want to get to know the world/lore/story or you like autistic solo endgame grinds. The things that made the game great in the 75 cap years are long gone though, you can't even recapture it on private era servers.
nah all new XI private servers die
there's a reason ppl still play t he same 10+ year old servers
horizon was notorious for social media shills too, cant have a normal comfy XI thread anymore without 1/3rd of it being HORIZON HORIZON JOIN HORIZNN XDXD
I play retail since it went dirt cheap during the pandemic and the playerbase shot up for a while. Now I've invested enough time that I'm 70 and pretty deep into it so I'm sticking with that. I ended up in a linkshell too.
Seething pserver fags. Sorry your 200 pop server died lmao
>anon makes a thread asking about Horizon >retardsperg enters the thread sperging about people daring to answer anon about Horizon
What the fuck is your problem?
>a normal comfy XI thread
That means a Horizon thread. Because retail XI isn't comfy. People are interested in Horizon for a reason. I'm sorry you're hit by sunk cost and you don't wanna start over but nobody else gives a crap about retail.
The leveling experience is great, and you can have a decent amount of fun running through the Zilart and CoP story missions.
Everything after that sucks though. The endgame community is filled with people whos entire lives consist of camping HNMs for 12 hours a day and freely admit they're on welfare because a job would get in the way of their ability to play FFXI.
the journey is what I'm in there for, don't give a shit about endgame
You'll have a good time then. The only issue will be that for some CoP stuff it will probably be hard to entirely avoid some of those people. But realistically CoP is the last part of your journey anyway.
The leveling experience is great, and you can have a decent amount of fun running through the Zilart and CoP story missions.

This is why ToAU was the golden age of XI. Actual fun shit you can do in endgame besides waiting around for HNMs to pop
Because it's an older game, it's full of people that have been playing on other private servers together for years. Which means that they have these insane 5+ year grudges against certain players and it leads to a lot of bullshit if you get involved with HNMLS' at the end game.
Really, the HNMLS scene was the only bad part. Most players are very friendly and welcoming to new blood and are willing to each you, it's just that at end game there's a lot of politics involved and the neets rule the server. Because of how the game works, DKP is the only viable system and the neets will change up the sleep schedules to make every camp so they can farm DKP. They will do victory laps around you if you're not a hardcore player and you will show up only to get other players loot and never get anything for yourself unless it's on rot.
Enjoy the game to max level, it's an awesome time. But be careful of getting too invested into the end game scene because that's where the cracks begin to show and you will start running into players that are HEAVILY invested into FFXI because they spend all their time on it and that leads to constant massive drama.
I just started playing it with a friend since Wings is dead, it's pretty okay, 27RDM/17BLM right now, everyone is really friendly and you won't have trouble finding a linkshell.
it's weird how the mmo formula has changed so much. you can waste your life on the old ones no problem, you can spend the entire day playing and entire years will go by in the blink of an eye. but the new ones actively try to get you to stop playing them for too long by setting arbitrary caps and timegating things.
can anyone explain how some people latch on to some things? for every game there's always at least one person obsessed with it. is it that they've dedicated so much time and can't let go? there isn't much sadder in gaming than seeing only one or two people in a multiplayer game. why the fuck are they there? what drives them?
>and never movie past it.
Kinda like a majority of people throughout their lives who are fond of their memories and enjoy returning to them every now and then. Seems pretty autistic to not understand this, it might seem weird because this manifested in different ways in the older generations but many memories for millennials are largely made up of online video games whether you like it or not lol.
Boomers still go back and watch old movies they grew up on or literally only watch old movies since they spent a shit ton of time watching movies growing up. I don't think it's weird for people to go back and play old games they grew up playing especially with how much nostalgia baiting has been exploited in the gaming industry which appeals to people who spent a shit ton of time playing video games.
>i meant people that obsess over a game, not people that come back to enjoy memories
They're basically one and the same and I don't see a problem with that. Stop exaggerating and let people enjoy things lol, I don't get mad at boomers for being obsessed with the goonies or star wars or some blaxploitation series they marathon every year. There's always going to be people in any hobby or interest who are deranged

no they aren't the same and haven't been exaggerating. quit acting like an overly offended homosexual
No, I'm glad people who never had a chance to try XI can check it out but as someone who spent 20-30,000 hours in retail back in the day I can't stand how poorly maintained private servers are. The fact that they add casualized concepts like level sync, more teleport options, and increasing movement speeds really takes the fun out of it.
It has all of that and more, even the base exp gain is higher than what era retail had. You'd feel like you were walking through molasses if you saw the real move speed from back then.
It literally does, among a dozen other things that make the game easier. As noted it's a nice place to go check the game out but it's a hell of a lot easier because of the modern changes they've made.
Honestly the big things keeping me from trying XI boil down to its own sub fee, I hope Square realizes to tie it and XIV together some time in that regard, shit like PlayOnline management, and just the sheer daunting timesink. I'm 30 now, it would be rough as hell to really get into the swing of these things.
People have been bugging them about it for nearly a decade, we actually have a real chance now that it's getting a proper crossover with 14 but even then I don't know if they'd want to tussle with Playonline regardless.
Retail is basically a super fast solo game where you can do everything without any hassle or major time sink, it's only the private servers that attempt to emulate the old systems where you'd have to put real time in.
I know there were some Ganker or /vrpg/fags on Phoenix but this was quite a bit of time ago now. Asura should have lots of people but was also merc hell, probably still is. I think there might be some good new server, but otherwise most should be ok, just watch out to not get stuck in a 99% jp onry server as I did unless you know nip.
didn't 14 1.0 have a single shared sub with ff11 and then they separated them later? scumbag move, i'd love it if they merged them again or at least open up an official ffxi classic server if they want to nickel and dime us like that.
Yes but I don't know the specifics of it, I think what they did was waive the 14 sub initially so the game was technically free to play and then later combined them somehow before removing it when ARR happened. The sad thing is that today it actually costs more to sub to XI, a 21 year old game in legitimate maintenance mode, than it does to sub to XIV.
I played it for a while. On the surface level it looks just like the classic days but there are so many buffs to all the classes that the game is so trivialized. The community at high level is more toxic than WoW so it's a pretty awful experience all around.
>Promise to nerf NIN subjob so it's not required >'Big' nerf to NIN is shadows going from 30 to 45 second recast time >Still have to bring NIN as a subjob
The only thing I liked about the server and all of its 'rebalances' are the magic burst buffs
>Wanting fun nerfed
total brainlet take, that or someone who grew up on private servers and only knows merit point parties as the main endgame activity
Was gearswap intended? I’m not talking about 3rd party add ons I mean The whole idea of changing gear. Because if it wasn’t intentional it seems like a massive oversight
If it wasn't then I'd have to imagine in their year 1 rework of the game before releasing it outside of japan they would have addressed it. I think they are on record saying they didn't expect the level of autism people approached it with though.

fags say 14 is a jrpg because of the story, which it is a jrpg story but the game itself is not an rpg at least not anymore
go to bed
?
>>low population
even back in the day retail servers only sat at 600~1000 online
>the list of retail pros is nearly all cons
Nice pros retailkek
What's really depressing is there are people in this world who will never know the true joy of hanging out with your best bros in vanadiel.

I'm just waiting for them to run a free login campaign again, normally they'd do one around this time of year.

i'd rather my comfy 100 pop server
no newfags. no sweaties, no 3rdies, good shit

>because it's fun
You have good taste. There's a thread up in >>>/vm/ btw.
/vg/ taught me that Ganker is bad for old mmo games.
nta but /vm/ is unironically a really good community for mmos unlike /vg/ adhd trannies
I still play it
Played it for a bit. Had a great time but my interactions with the staff soured the experience for me so I stopped playing.
Great game
Decent server
Mediocre devs
Terrible community
I had fun on Horizon but I'm glad I stopped when I did.
what's wrong with the community? in my experience it has been pretty good
Literally nothing except nolifes rushing everything like the losers they are.
the journey is what I'm in there for, don't give a shit about endgame
Then horizon will be lots of fun.
You'll have a good time then. The only issue will be that for some CoP stuff it will probably be hard to entirely avoid some of those people. But realistically CoP is the last part of your journey anyway.
Try to make friends that you can level/do quests with.
Its only 6:54 though..

Only reason I quit horizon was it was too addicting and I had to get a job. Sad.
it's weird how the mmo formula has changed so much. you can waste your life on the old ones no problem, you can spend the entire day playing and entire years will go by in the blink of an eye. but the new ones actively try to get you to stop playing them for too long by setting arbitrary caps and timegating things.
All I can say is I hope horizon is around when I retire
i tried but the game was so fucking dogshit and i love old mmos like eq, ultima, osrs, l2 and vanilla wow
it's okay to be a casual gamer.
It's literally eq but ff
the gameplay is garbage though it didn't age well at all. even 1999 EQ feels way more smooth these days
can anyone explain how some people latch on to some things? for every game there's always at least one person obsessed with it. is it that they've dedicated so much time and can't let go? there isn't much sadder in gaming than seeing only one or two people in a multiplayer game. why the fuck are they there? what drives them?

I'd still be playing retail to this day if they had just not trivialized all the pre-99 content and not added fast travel or trusts.
It's still better than the slop that passes for "MMOs" these days but they just fucked with it too much
