Did its devs know how incredible Ocarina of Time would be while working on it?

Just watch the intro:

Of all the things they could show you to get you pumped up when you start the game, it's your character galloping a horse on the planes with bits of almost ambiental music. If you don't press any button, the BPM decelerates even further and you're watching what looks like two grannies executing a ginger belly dancer. All of it feels like something that you don't even know how to feel about, besides being profoundly atmospheric and lightning in a bottle. Even other more subtle intros, for example Crystal Chronicle's, feel very much bombastic in comparison and almost "tryhard".

Similar to the simple Zelda cover arts, it feels like it was done by people who didn't just have boundless confidence in their product but were also very aware of the cultural impact it would have in the future. I wish there were interviews where they talked about random stuff like this.

It's mostly the music that makes the title screen more moody and reflective. Completely honestly, the intro is simply in-game footage with greater camerawork than what a player possess. These type of cutscenes are common in OoT, but that is not to say that they are bad, for the time and place in history these are far above average. But if you mute the original music and play more "epic" music, the tone completely changes. Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3XX0p1wLD4

Did Koji Kondo compose the title theme? That guy is a genius.

Koji Kondo is great but his genius is largely due to the fact that Miyamoto was an absolute slavedriver and bullied him into greatness, Whiplash style

the picasso "make it, smash it, make it again, repeat" approach really is a solid one though.
even though it really can hurt the feelings of the artist

Cool funfact is that Miyamoto himself contributed some noodling. IIRC he plays an instrument in the Wind Waker theme

I would love to see a Whiplash-style movie where Miyamoto drives Koji into a creative frenzy

It's both. Imagine the title song playing while we're seeing some shitty random fire temple
      >Completely honestly, the intro is simply in-game footage with greater camerawork than what a player possess
      That's why it's good

Not to minimize the game, as its really well done, but they used a lot of movie techniques to drawn the play in since they couldn't rely on separate cute scenes due to the consoles limitations.
It ended up being a much better presentation because even today, most AAA games will have a jarring cut between gameplay and cutscene, and it makes the game seem sloppier even if it requires more work to do. Using precorded gameplay footage with different camera angles should've been a staple in all games, but its less marketable.

Damn, my only gripe with the Ocarina of Time intro/theme was that it doesn't feel very Zelda. Now I'm finding that it's actually as Zelda as it gets and always was

To be fair, there is a lot more to the theme than just that melody, even if it's cool

When I was a kid, I thought those 3 intro scenes were showing the location of the Triforce. First piece from the two grannies, second from the guy in the volcano, third from Ganondorf himself.

missed opportunity to churn out official romhacks well into the future. by the Wii U console, we should have had a platform where we designed OoT dungeons and shared them over the internet.
