Did the designers of this game ever even see the movie?

The alien wasn't a fricking velociraptor stomping all around patrolling the ship, hissing and shit, it was a weird, creepy bug hiding in the shadows until it could ambush you and eat your face.

In the original alien movie no one ever knew where the frick the alien was and it caught all its victims off guard, by surprise. in AI, it's always in the nearest vent, waiting until its script tells it a sound has exceeded 50 decibels or whatever and that it's time to execute suspense routine 2a.

A silent monster that instakills would be considered "too hard" for most players and devs wouldn't have the balls
I dont like the stomping and snarling either but knowing the alternative would be no game at all im fine with it
Maybe theres sound replacer mods that fix it, hopefully also ones that replace the obvious pig and tiger noises it makes

            Anonymous

I'm sure I've seen people mention a mod on here that removes the sound from the xenomorph and makes it basically silent, maybe give that a try?
Plus there's the mod that untethers the alien from the player, so it's no longer in close proximity but just wanders over the level/station randomly unless you attract it with noise. Maybe that would be better?
As it was I lost interest in the game after a while, I died too many times to it and it became more frustrating than scary.

There is a mod that does exactly this. That's what I hated about the hard difficulty, the alien was always where I was all the time like being glued to my back. Kept jumping down the vents and checking everything, it felt very gamey in the worst sense and ruined my immersion. I typically play games on hard but I had to restart and play this on easier because of the alien AI (there wasn't a mod back then). The androids are more interesting on hard too, so it was a painful tradeoff I had to make.

Same anon and I'll admit that I bounced off the game after a while since I found the alien sections tiresome with how obvious it starts to be how things work, but something like this might introduce enough unpredictability that I could enjoy it.

This is why you don't listen to some Ganker Black person for video game ideas. It wouldn't be too hard, it would be boring and frustrating. Hard is when you are facing a challenge. Being suddenly ambushed and killed on the spot is oh well I have to reload/restart from checkpoint again hope I don't have to repeat 10+ minutes of what I already did before. That's not suspense, that's not threat, it's just shit mechanic. Case in point you offered no solution to the problem, no clear description of a proper gameplay mechanic, just typical vague "it should be interesting" shit.

nonsense. In the end of the first film after triggering the self destruct the alien is walking around in the open. there are specifically multiple scenes where ripley almost gets caught by the monster. It's never even specified if the flamethrower actually even works on it.
The alien also casually takes down parker and lambert at the same time without ambushing them. it sometimes uses stealth but it also is shown to outright attack without relying on surprise

  14. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Assuming this isn’t bait, I’ll bite.
It’s a game, not a film. The alien has to function differently in order to create a fair and entertaining enemy to play against. You don’t have plot armour like a movie character so the developers had to make sure you had tools to survive alien encounters, namely your ears. By making the alien loud and patrolling they gave you options on how and when to run or hide, thereby creating a much more interactive enemy.
Imagine if the alien just acted like a trapdoor spider that sat totally inactive until you stepped within range of it, at which point it would instakill you. That would be neither a fun nor interactive experience because it would build the wrong type of fear. It wouldn’t be the suspense of planning out your route to an objective based on how you can outsmart the alien in the event it should turn up. It would be the worry of stepping on an invisible pressure plate you have no way of detecting and losing 40 minutes of progress because RNG decided it wasn’t your day.
You see? If you got your way, you wouldn’t be able to defeat the alien. You’d only ever defeat the odds.

On another note, I’ve been replaying AvP2 recently and it got me to thinking about the aliens’ AI that just mindlessly rushes whatever it sees like in Aliens. I think a sort of pack-hunting adaptive AI might work better where they surround you and look for weaknesses in your defences while they stick to the shadows as much as possible. You might be watching one, then hear a hiss and turn around to find one halfway into the light, about to take your head off.
What really irks me about swarming behaviour like in Aliens is that each xeno is born from one human. They’re not like ants. They have, at most, only as many units as the enemy is willing to give them, usually less because the aliens tend to end up outright killing a few people. This makes each alien valuable, and sending them in a Zerg rush is a waste of resources.

      Anonymous

well they still failed at making an alien game because the alien isn't scary.

          >That’s not their fault
did you not just try excusing them changing the alien's behavior because the movie version wouldn't work well in a video game? they could have changed it however they saw fit and they made a rampaging t-rex that's constantly on your ass to generate artificial suspense.

            Anonymous

I’m simply saying that I’ve never been afraid of the alien in any of the media it appeared in, even as a kid. I can acknowledge that an enemy is more fun to play against than a hypothetical alternative without being scared of either. When I say it’s not their fault that the alien wasn’t scary, I’m simply saying that I, as an individual, am incapable of being scared of a monster I’ve loved for very nearly my entire life. I found the working joes quite intimidating, though. Perhaps some would see it the opposite way since every android can be killed while all the aliens are immortal.
My arguments don’t contradict each other. One is an argument in favour of the devs’ choices as to how the alien functions as an NPC, the other is an observation of subjective tastes that vary from person to person.

              Anonymous

The joes were more scary to me too. How they were made to look not human on purpose with their rubber faces, monotone voice while they are choking you to death, their bullet sponge bodies as they should be. Humans were the only shit part of the game because everything else was more or less believable but humans acted like scripted robots too.

Yeah they did, which is why the Sevastopol nailed the aesthetics. As for alien behavior, believe it or not sometimes a flawless recreation of film doesn't translate well into good game design. The joke is that OP hasn't gotten past Medical yet.
    That is the "funny" here.

The Alien patrols the hallways in Medical because that is where the game wants to create the player paranoia about him, while for the rest of the game (aside from the nest) he actually skulks in the wents and only pops in when there is some sound to attract him.
OP made this thread because it would be so funny and such a master troll if people started saying how he was "filtered" by the game's first actual level with an alien as the main threat.

The joke did not work however because the truth is, nobody on nu-Ganker actually plays any games, especially not weird non-AAA games like Alien Isolation.

      Anonymous

Not OP but I did get filtered by medical the first time I played, got frustrated and stopped playing.
I went back to it after a while, and the way I eventually got past medical was by just walking to my next objective/save point and reloading if I got killed, eventually RNG wins out and you don't get molested by the alien

        Anonymous

        >Not OP but I did get filtered by medical the first time I played
Yeah, most people do find medical somewhat unreasonable, even I got pretty frustrated with it. I don't have an issue with OP getting stuck there, I have an issue with him making such a stupid, blatantly "troll" thread because it's so funny to make people call you "filtered" when you actually didn't get filtered.

          Anonymous

True, but the level did tinge my experience of the game - messing around with noisemakers or the other tools felt like they wasted time and weren't any more effective at least to me than by just walking and hoping I didn't get hit by the alien, and reloading if I did.

            Anonymous

Actually, to ballance the high presence of the Alien in Medical Wing, they deliberately toned down some of other elements that become more important in later stages of the game. For an insance, in medical, the Alien is comparatively more deaf and "blind" (I mean he is blind, but the distance at which he can "smell" you is reduced).
So ironically, unlike the rest of the game, you can actually quite effectively stealth your way around the alien in Medical, just by keeping your distance, moving silently, and waiting around. Just don't EVER whip up the motion tracker, that shit makes him b-line right for you.

Medical is weird. And I get what they were trying to go for: the idea of making you expect the fricker around every corner - without having him being around every corner. They want you to be intensely weary of him, even though in later games, you can go most of a level without getting anywhere near to him.
But it is a bit clumsy in execution, and I do wonder if there wasn't a better way to do this. I like Alien Isolation a LOT but it has flaws, and the whole execution of Medical is far from ideal in my opinion.

        Anonymous

Medical is frustrating because it feels like it's intentionally designed to make you fail. It does provide opportunities for cool moments though. I once was in a room when I heard screaming from outside the door; I ducked under a table just in time to see 3 survivors bust through the door and run to the other hallway with the alien hot on their tail.

      Anonymous

you're wrong about how the alien works, the director sends him front and backstage regularly throughout the game, not just in medical

  19. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Why the frick does Medical filter people? I didn't have any problems with it. Do people sprint everywhere and alert the alien or what??

      Anonymous

I think that the everpresent nature of the alien, the fact that it's never more than a room or so away from you and if it goes in the vents, that's only for a few seconds before it comes out again. The game introduces you to hiding in lockers, which are a fricking trap and honestly probably shouldn't have been included. And it also doesn't make it clear that you can walk without alerting the alien, so people start crouch walking everywhere which is slow.
Basically the game makes itself clear as an old-school stealth game, and that turns a lot of people off (there's a reason that genre is mostly dead).

You fight humans, can use the flame on the alien and can use the alien to attack other humans
      Cyborgs are the biggets threat

I actually found dealing with cyborgs more interesting than the alien, at least when you have weapons. The portion after you evacuate the first alien into space where you're wandering around hiding from/shooting cyborgs feels like a classic survival horror game.

The alien isn't killable, no. Your regular firearms don't do anything to it, you only have a flamethrower that will scare it away but which will stop working as effectively over time until the alien starts ignoring it.
There are working joes, robots that you CAN kill. There are also humans you can kill.

      Anonymous

      >can you fight aliens in this game at all or its just pure walking simulator?
It's a stealth / survival horror game. You have three types of enemies (Humans, robots and the Alien). All human and robotic enemies can be killed permanently (you get a bunch of weapons and tools, including pistos, flamethrows, molotovs, and tasers), though you won't always have the tools to it, and more to the point, doing so might be more dangerous than just avoiding them.
Alien can be dealt with only temporarily. You can scare him away for a while, but he will always come back eventually.

The game honestly plays like a mixture of those walking sim horror games like Outlast, but crossed with a light version of System Shock.
It isn't particularly deep, but it has a hell of a lot more mechanical depth than walking sims, including a combat system that is optional and rarely optimal, but still there and decently fleshed out.
It's just that ultimately, the one biggest threat cannot be killed permanently.

Because if you design a humanoid 3D model you still need to animate it similarly to a human. Changing the legs makes it appear more alien while walking.

in the movie the alien was carefully shown only briefly and partly from specific angles in dark lighting. It would look like a guy in a rubber suit (because that's what it was) if they showed it fully. The game cannot dictate the camera angle like film, so they had to adjust the model to make it look cool when fully revealed

Yeah, because in the movie it was actually a guy in a suit. That's not an issue in a video game where it's a 3D model, and you don't need to worry about the costume looking like a costume because there is no costume

The Predator is only scary when you don't know what it looks or where it is because it's invisible. When it's visible it ceases to be a horrifying alien monster and just looks like a guy in a suit who could fit in as an alien race in Star Trek. It's a good action film though.
