Because you are actually getting something from it. It filters out a lot of kids / cheaters. Where as with Battle.net it's just so they can ban your phone number if you scream Black person a few too many times.

This also applies to Dota 2
Why can you steam shills never admit steam is just as bad as blizzard for this, you just tolerate it because steam is your uwu company

Oh well. I don't care if they have my burner number.

Ban? You mean sell your number to Pajeet telemarketers, which is what Valve does too.
There was a huge uproar over it when CSGO added it and Valve began selling the numbers to telemarketers.

Check the CS:GO forums and filter for "Varification" and "Telemarketer". You'll find tons of posts going back when they first added it.
Just because you were too young to play CSGO when they added auths, and your favourite Twitch streamer hasn't made a 10 hour long wankfest video about it, doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Getting your phone number banned doesn't matter at all when they can just ban you either way. I've been screaming Black person and gay in Dota 2 since forever and never had any trouble. You could even argue that having the phone thing is good because it makes life harder for boosters and cheaters

You can spam every slur you can think of in voice and text chat and you will never get banned for it in both CS:GO and Dota 2.
I have seen people get bans from WOW for insulting vegans, insulting blizzard or calling teamates incompetent and or stupid.

You can still play unranked without it in that case.

The difference with Steam is that you gain more than access to playing the game. You gain a "trust" ranked mode.

they had my burner number 10 years ago from the battle.net 2 party auth or whatever

WTF. You've never needed a phone number for 2FA. Blizzard would send an authenticator for you to use.

yeah I added a phone number ... my bro's number on dial, that is, to tell him I pirated the game instead

its has nothing to do with authenticating or an account protection with dealing with being hacked issue

its so they can permanently ban you
and when they use ai to decide if they heard "bad thing" when you never said bad thing your fricked

they also arent allowing people with prepaid phones, meaning people who use time cards are fricked, only expensive locked in contracted phones allowed

        >they also arent allowing people with prepaid phones
How exactly do they check that?

          Anonymous

          they have a way
usa people who use cricket arent allowed to play since they are cheap provider

the point is many people use "prepaid phones" cause its cheaper and more cost effective for certian people
but bliz somehow thinks it means burner phones and they are already blocking legit people from playing a fricking F2P game

if it was specifically only needed for ranked mode id be fine with that since ranked are tryhards anyways but requiring a a phone# for a game let alone a f2p one is fricking moronic

I never added a mobile authenticator to my steam account, because I din't want to deal with the 15 day trade ban, so I kept putting off and saying "i'll do it later", but then one day I go to my computer and for some reason, I'm logged out. I try to log back in but someone changed my password and removed my email. I contact steam support to get it back, but they said they need the original CD key the account was created with to give it back to me, which I don't have anymore, so now my account is permenantly gone.

Don't be a reatrd like me, add two step authentication. "later" might never come.

Something similar happened to me except I got my account back, but yeah. Any account that is important to you or has value should have 2FA enabled. The way chinese and indian homies hack now a days it's a necessity.

      >Have 2 step
      >Change phone number/address, forget about the Steam account
      >Cant authenticate
      >Locked out of account
      >Have to go through lengthy process including sending Valve a photo ID to establish identity.

You are fricked however you slice it. I ended up getting my account back but these "features" they add for your protection can easily frick you over.

In my case I was fricked over because Im a working professional with a lot going on and I forgot.
