FFXI in 2004, never heard the term in any other prior community including the previous FF entries, so it's probably some pc/mmo lingo

When did "Adds" start getting thrown around? I stockholmed myself into liking it after enough time.

      in what context?

        Anonymous

Usually used for extra enemies during a boss or I guess raid encounter. I assume it had to do something with early MMORPGs.

i always heard that being referred to "modifiers" i think

is mmo fight terminology for bosses who summon monsters into the fight you need to deal with, usually on a rotation or timer, they are "additional" enemies, hence adds, that you need to deal with to not get overwhelmed or have other dangerous abilities so a term was needed to refer to them so that everyone knew to kill them and target them.
its a very specific term that people often use wrong.

Yes moron. Mobs are mobs and trash is trash. Anyone who even plays minecraft is a gay as well. There are 2 terms that should never have existed but somehow still do: Toon and twink. It’s char or pure if you must define either

I remember the first time I heard it when someone said "pull the mob" in WoW and thought he meant the whole group of enemies, which he didn't and we all died.

    yeah, mostly in WoW

That was around in Ultima online and Runescape. It's short for 'mobile' and comes from MUDs. So way before Minecraft.

Mobs came from MUDs and meant Mobile NPC. There were of course stationary npcs that were just labeled NPC.

            Anonymous

Because you pull groups of enemies into a train that moves through the region. Again: you're wrong.

It would still be a mob.

Yes and a raid is still a dungeon, just with more players and harder enemies in it, you still call it a raid you dumb Black person.

                Anonymous

This may be hard for you to believe because you're a dumb zoomer who doesn't know what a mob is, but raids don't have to be in dungeons. Assuming that is flawed.

                >raid
                >toon
I'm so glad FFXI didn't pick up anything besides "mob" from the wowtroony cancer, and even then it's just a tiny undercurrent in its usage. I'm just gonna stop using that word though to cut off as much association as possible. No, I don't care whatever it's history is, it's been appropriated by wowtroons now.

  27. 4 weeks ago

I first heard it used in MUDs in the mid '90s

  28. 4 weeks ago
    Anonymous

    >A mob, short for mobile or mobile object, is a computer-controlled non-player character (NPC) in a video game such as an MMORPG or MUD. Depending on context, every and any such character in a game may be considered to be a "mob", or usage of the term may be limited to hostile NPCs and/or NPCs vulnerable to attack.

the internet demographic really has changed though
it used to be full of tech literate adults and university/college students at the youngest (still in STEM fields) and when it was expanded to the public spending time on it was mostly those demographics and some kids who were definitely going down the same path
but many years later now its got everyone on it, older audiences have retreated to certain spaces, especially long running communities becoming invite only or due to other factors being too obtuse to use for the average person with younger users flooding anywhere that isn't like that

it was an MMO term. Short for MOBile entity, since a lot of early MUDS only had static NPCs and turn based battles.
Minecraft uses the term because Notch was an MMO developer.
