timeline being worthless is totally different, this is a new low for the series. even mario games have better continuity.

*spams journo headlines, random twitter posts, no longer smug &/or laughing celebrities, "Totk is the ultimate Zelda", accuses every naysayer being Eric*

There, that's the inevitable future of your thread.

Yeah, the writing in TOTK was so bad it astounds me. They even forgot that Purah de-aged slowly as described by her diary in BOTW. In one of her TOTK diaries she says that she went from granny to e-boi in a second.

And in BOTW, people know about Ganon being a blight on the land throughout history, but in TOTK they don't know about Ganondorf. In TOTK, Ganondorf only showed up once and then got sealed away until TOTK. Yet Calamity Ganon was a thing? None of it makes any sense and I can't understand how the writing was that bad. I don't play Zelda for the story, but goddamn the writing is so poor that I can't help but be flabbergasted.

How is anyone who learned about Ganon meant to work out "there was originally a man with almost the same name" unless someone directly told them?

Zelda is the only one who learns of the name Ganondorf when she sees him in the past, right? Nobody in the present knows his name.

Correction: the sages learn of it when the old sages speak to them at the end of each dungeon, but by then it doesn't matter that he used to be Calamity Ganon, they already dealt with that.

Because Urbosa even says “they say the calamity used to be a gerudo”

Calamity Ganon was the sealed Ganondorf's malice seeping out from beneath the earth where he was sealed. The Hero's Aspect armor you get for completing all shrines even tells you he was the one who fought the first appearence of the Calamity. In BotW Urbosa mentions that the original form of the Calamity was a Gerudo, so they know what it is.

        >Calamity Ganon was the sealed Ganondorf's malice seeping out from beneath the earth where he was sealed.

That's just your headcanon. I thought of the same thing, but it still doesn't make sense because they talk about Ganon being a blight on Hyrule forever in BOTW. It's clearly talking about his appearances in all the other games, they just retconned it very very poorly in TOTK. I have doubts that the Triforce even exists/is known anymore in TOTK despite it making a brief appearance at the end of BOTW.

I don't even understand why malice and gloom are separate things, wtf were the writers smoking?

Presumably due to the gameplay differences they decided to make them called different things.
They are effectively the same thing though (and could have been handwaved away by making a little note of lore for why the denizens decided to rename it that).

In japanese the original word for malice was "onnen", which could be translated as grudge, malice or hatred.
The original word for gloom in japanese is "miasma", which I assume is because it seems to be airborne in the sequel, so I suppose that makes more sense why it would be given a descriptive name like that.

they handwaved so much lore in TotK, especially the Sheikah technology, but a different effect for red glowing goo is were they drew the line?

It's not a retcon, Fuyibayashi said a couple of days ago that the original Kingdom of Hyrule was destroyed and the Rauru in Tears is a refounding of a new kingdom. Old games still canon but now reside in the very distant past.

This is a lie and not canon you piece of crap. I'm going to kill you. Rauru founded Hyrule, that was made very clear.
      >old gayms still canon

Not that anon, but regardless, vital information explaining the setting shouldn't be provided outside the game. We don't need a confusing source of information that may present even more questions rather than answers like what the Final Fantasy Ultimanias provide, e.g., Final Fantasy VII being a distant sequel to Final Fantasy X

Splatoon is the one series where Nintendo actually tries with continuity and they can't even do that right, it's unsurprising they fuck up with Zelda

To be fair, since BotW was an open world game in which you could have just skipped right to the ending without having done anything, they need to acknowledge events that could happen as little as possible in TotK as to not contradict the canon of what your BotW experience was
