The D&D player base reaction to WoTC was strong at first but the average 5e player can only pretend to have principles for so long it seems. In the next week all but a few 5e content creators will walk it back and come back to WoTCs. Those who do leave the plantation for good will only got to PF2e. 5e fans deserve what WoTC is doing to their game. Best case scenario they come out with the AI DM in the next five years and the 5e filter just becomes finer. Keeping more of these people in their containment game.

I hope I’m wrong and WoTC manages to fumble so hard they lose the base and fail as a business. Best case scenario WoTC goes the way of TSR and this scares Hasbro off from TTRPGs for a decade or two. On one hand I don’t want this tradition to be co-opted and ruined by Hasbro but on the other hand I do not care what’s in 6e or how bad WoTC fricks their played and customers

I would bet most normies would only be actively playing for a few months to a year tho. Especially if the experience is as subpar as I assume it will be.
Don't forget that, trash system or not, it still demands a DM for the game, and the only ones left willing to DM for it will be autistic guys normies won't play with and a handful of normies who won't even follow the rules and instead just play pretend.
Thing is, the number of DMs will dwindle drastically which are the main spenders. No reason to aub to DnD Beyond or their microX if nobody's running a game.

There's always a sweet spot in the homogenization of anything where it's still inspired and yet it also appeals to a great number of people, but then corporate profiteering squeezes all the charm out of it.
It used to be you could mainly see this on new cable channels (it happened right before my eyes to Cartoon Network and Comedy Central back in the 90s-00s) but /tg/'s users might be more familiar with the process on YouTube where it seems to happen extremely fast

This is the same process that is happening to D&D now, again (it already happened in the 90s). The game just has a different lowest common denominator audience who are the most profitable (in the short term) to go after - plus we live in an age of "whales" that are also easy to identify and market to.
I'm sure what happened in the 90s will happen again. There will be some kind of a product that captures the zeitgeist and also offers an equivalent but cheaper experience to what Wizards offers.
Blades in the Dark or some other PbtA game better get their asses in gear and release an easy to use free app that players can smoothly use in both real life groups and online groups and combinations thereof. In fact, there should probably be a system built specifically around that concept, of characters who play both in person and through telepresence
