6 was really something, huh? I played that game for like two hours and never went back to it. I heard it had various problems but honestly I never even got to that point.
I think it was just the ridiculous level and stat inflation that broke me completely, when I kill two dudes on the first tutorial stage and gain like 18 levels and dozens of stat points I've already been cut loose of any context of what I'm doing even doing anymore. Is level 50 good? Is this broken axe with +57 attack worth keeping? How the frick would I know, I literally just started playing, holy shit this game was made by morons. It's hard to say man, they're all basically the same game at heart. I think mechanically each of them basically improved on the previous one until 6, after that it's story and characters which is going to be a personal preference, all I can say there is avoid 3 and 6.

All the ported versions of the Disgaea games(and several other Nipon Ichi game) from 1-5 are the superior versions because whenever they port them to other consoles they tend to add lots of QoL changes, bug fixes, new characters, extra story, DLC being free in game, and pretty much just more content. There's really no reason to even play the original PS2 and PS3 versions of the Disgaea games. Also if you're a dubgay, the english VA's were changed after the PS2 Disgaea games and have been the iconic cast for over ten years. Just more reasons not to bother with the PS2 Disgaea games.
>D1 Complete
What were they even thinking with that port? They had the perfect chance to add a lot of the QoL features and gameplay from the later games but just blew it all on the new artstyle.
Fire Emblem didn't even do a major revamp, they just added romance, which wasn't even a series first, and Awakening luckily released at really good time since the 3DS had so little to play that people were buying anything just to use the system.
i just don't understand because with the acceptance of anime into normalgay spheres you would think a unique colourful series like disgaea would be perfect to target to the current age of zoomers (toning down some of the grindier aspects of the gameplay to "modernize" it)
even just an anime would popularize it a lot, the IP is so utterly and completely poorly handled and deserves better
NIS hardly has the budget for games these days, a second anime adaptation that will end as a flop like the first would drive them to bankruptcy.

If they'd released one a few years ago, maybe instead of D6 when the series still had a bit of traction and funding and the new generation of zoomers was emerging, they would be in a much better spot now

NIS are morons so too late for that, maybe they could manage to make a small OVA with a beach episode or something. Cheap fanservice is the only thing I could see happening for this franchise.

I mean it is a popular series with girls too dood. tumblr really liked disgaea for some odd fricking reason.
Zoomers are ironic weebs, so otaku pandering stuff like Disgaea is cringe to them.
Disgaea is ironic but in the "soulful/affirming" way, not the "cringe/self-hating" way
Zoomers who have never known entertainment that wasn't cynical probably have a hard time appreciating it
Yeah, older Disgaea games took on the anime tropes of its time as a satire, but still wanted to deliver a story. Newer Disgaea games just became the cliches and tropes without realizing they were done for satire anymore, and lost the good plot too. It's a shame.

I'm a zoomer, born after the twin towers. I was introduced to the series when there was fangirlying over Valvatorez in Tumblr half a decade ago, been a fan ever since I played D4.
I don't think they should tone down the grinding, it's the only reason I sank so much time into the games in the first place, it's their main staying power. I think the only way they will ever draw the normies again is with quality storytelling (altho I doubt they will ever be able to top D1) and westernization of the comedy like in FE.
They should just keep catering to their niche. The last two times they tried to force shonenshit it just sucked.
I tried playing the first game on psp a long time ago and found everything way too complicated. I just watched this video and wtf. How is any of this balanced?
>how is any of this balanced?
I also played the first game on psp and thought it was really balanced until it wasn't, and I had to start figuring out the different systems. Then I started using the item world and before I knew it I was so OP I just steamrolled through the campaign. My 2 pieces of advice with Disgaea have always been to start with the first game because it doesn't throw a hundred different systems at you all at once, and don't spend too much time in the item world until you finish the main story. Lots of people say the post-game is the real game in Disgaea, and if you want you could easily squeeze hundreds of hours out of it. It's not that the game is unbalanced, it's that there's multiple ways in which you can break the game if you want, and figuring out how to break the game is a lot of the fun.
Seems like a good deal, but I probably wouldn't buy all the games at once. I love Disgaea, but it's not the kind of game you're going to marathon back to back. You play a Disgaea game for hundreds of hours until you lose your mind and then put it down for a couple years until the next game is released and you're ready to do it again.
is it possible to "mess up" characters in this series? it would assault my autism to no end if I mindlessly start grinding only to realize I fricked up the stat growth of a character
can everyone basically max out with enough time?
anyone? it's the make or break answer as to whether I'll play this
no, theres no locking shit in for good. the worst you can ever do is allocate stats in reincarnation in a way you dislike later on. but then you just reincarnate again.
I never understood the appeal. You just grind out the same story maps until you can beat the story then you just... keep replaying it? Am I missing something like random maps or something? What's the point of getting stronger numbers with no end goal?
Every Disgaea game has a postgame with secret bosses that are much more difficult than anything in the main story. In Disgaea 2 the main story is like 40% of the games actual content
when stealing with a hand item, does the hit of the thief matter, or only the hit of the hand + character levels + target's speed + directional orientation?
it was never that popular, more priority to port the other games, then the NIS Classics, and whatever new stuff.
It'll probably happen eventually. hopefully D2 as well
The main dub VA got #metoo'ed and caused a lot of backlash from cancel culture where every company ended up dropping him. Companies were jumping through hoops trying to avoid using him in anything.
It's genuinely not that good of a game and the MC is a shittier retake on Laharl. It needed to explore its world a bit better, really. The best thing I can say about it is the hubworld is catchy as frick, especially when the singer kicks in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgezB2zuKLs
It probably needs a remake entirely, really. But given the state of how schoolshit in general gets bans on Steam, I figure it's probably not even fricking worth the effort for NIS.
The main dub VA got #metoo'ed and caused a lot of backlash from cancel culture where every company ended up dropping him. Companies were jumping through hoops trying to avoid using him in anything.
What put you off from it?
Some parts of the game are pretty obtuse, like the Master-Pupil system (which is pretty important to make Flonne a good unit) and unlocking more generic classes.
The Item World is really useful both as a distraction from the main game if you've hit a wall and to get stronger to overcome it, leveling up an item just 10 levels can give huge benefits and is a lot less tedious than actual level grinding.
I never really understood all the hate for 3. It was the first Disgaea I ever really sunk a lot of time into outside of beating the main story and I have nothing but fond memories of the game and its cast. It's definitely one of the weaker titles in the series for sure though.
yeah 6 was just an experimental phase.

Rebooblican here, though I usually am more of a chestist, if I had to choose I would be a rebooblican. I can subscribe to several of both parties' points, however, let's face it demochuds. Breasts are simply where it's at in terms of evolution... as all of us are biologically more attracted to them as they show a healthy partner (when on a thin body).
Damn, I haven't seen a good dancing gif paired well with a song in awhile. I have 1, 4, 5, and 6 on my Switch, but now I want to pull out my Vita and play 3 again. And I just started Digimon Survive earlier today...
>Disgaea 5 is $10 with discounts >Disgaea 6 is still $45 even with discounts
Who are they kidding with this price? I know it's the latest game in the series, but I wouldn't buy 6 unless it's lower than $20 considering the gameplay downgrade.
Disgaea was probably the first time I was playing a game and thought, "this game is really just all about grinding", and I realized I enjoyed grinding and that was the fun part. And then I went on to play a few thousand item world levels and played every other mainline game in the series. The humor and aesthetic of the first game really made it work, though.
5 have some quality of life stuff. Otherwise it's mostly just different flavors. If you intend to just play the main campaign, 4, but if you're a grind autist that see yourself potentially falling for the grinding memes, 5. There are some different mechanics, but for the most part they're pretty similar. I played 5 a long time ago, so I don't remember much about the campaign maps, but I thought 4 had more interesting maps overall for the main campaign, at least.
Unironically what that other anon said, or D5
You can get any skills on any units via squads, and leveling their stats is independent of which class they are
DD2 had similar mechanics to this, but wasn't as flexible when it comes to evilities so your generic's class really mattered when it came to fighting Baal. This is also why I think D5 is the best one, you can make an overpowered prinny and singlehandedly kill the superboss just from all the work put into them alone
Never happened to me after putting 70 hrs into the game, but I have the physical release... I ended up having to dig into the game's files due to circumstances and it seems the audio engines are different in the disc and PSN releases, despite both having the same version (v1.4). I suspect its something relating to that.
The story is pretty meh with a clear tone shift from D1 despite being a direct sequel. Laharl goes back to his jaded self despite almost killing himself for Flonne in the first game, hell maybe because of it, and then there's these two new, one tone, forced characters that play the role of siblings to Laharl and Etna.
The gameplay feels like a less polished D5 with simplified mechanics (magichange is gone, no skill upgrades) but clear differences (Master and pupil system, Weapon mastery as it works in the first game)
All in all it feels like how 3 is to 4, but with 5. It feels ever slightly less outdated than 4, I wouldn't recommend digging into it that much.
I remember loving Disgaea 1 when it came out, but then the grind set in in the postgame. There was that one level where it was just a bunch of enemies standing in a 3x3 block, and you used a Samurai skill that killed them all in one hit, and then you played that level over and over, making the senate or whatever it was strengthen enemies so that you'd get more XP, and so on. And there was some system where indictments helped you strengthen your character, but I couldn't find any guide explaining why or in what way? They just took it as a given that indictments were useful and acted like you already knew how they worked. And there was a system for resetting a character's level in order to start them with better stats, which just added to the grind. And then there was the... Oni unit, I think it was? That had A-rank in every weapon type and was simply the best type of unit, and then there was a stronger version later that had S-rank in everything, but they were ugly... And there was the Item World system, that could make you super-ultra-boost the stats of gear, but it took a long time and I don't think I ever even got strong enough to complete them.
I just remember loving Disgaea 1 and wanting to become super strong and beat all the challenges, but it became such a slog. If I had autohotkey to automate the samey grinding, it could've been less annoying, but I just got sick of killing that 3x3 set of enemies over and over and over.
Do the later games alleviate this at all? I played/beat 2, but I don't remember that being any different.
>I just remember loving Disgaea 1 and wanting to become super strong and beat all the challenges, but it became such a slog. If I had autohotkey to automate the samey grinding, it could've been less annoying, but I just got sick of killing that 3x3 set of enemies over and over and over.
If anything D1 is too easy overall and lacks big challenge at end. You aren't required to create any uber gear, nor farm innocents, nor reincarnate stupid amount of time.
D2 on other hand can suck a fat one, as final battle is borderline impossible unless you prepare certain classes or are happy with grinding gear for multiple characters. Worst part I wouldnt mind latter if item world wasn't shitfest with item levels.
just tried disgaea 1, it had graphical glitches so i refunded it
might try emulating it instead
1 ran fine for me. 2 crashed twice. Try PSP version, for most part it should be same as PC.
1 and 2 lack a lot of QoL from later games.
Just get 5.
6 is the worst Disgaea game so far as it has the least amount of content (especially when compared to 5) and removed too many features and added an auto grinding system which plays awfully for the series.
The only redeeming quality of D6 is it has a better story than D5 but it's a Disgaea story so there's still not much to write about there.
Overall just play D5
Replaying Disgaea 1 on my fricking tablet and as much as I love Harada's new art, there's something about his Flonne portraits in the first game (assuming he's the one that drew them) that have this pure mother energy. It's such a perfect design.
It's because of the different style that's pretty unique to D1. D2 kept it a little bit but then the style became what it is now by D3

If you're ONLY gonna play a single entry, might as well start with the very first so you can understand why the series even got sequels in the first place
Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness
sorry it's not on steam

4 for the good balance between good story and gameplay
1 will always be my favorite. The later games added more, but 1 already had so much when it came out that it seemed like a massive joke how absurd everything was. Probably the best dungeon crawler on steam. Story gets really fricking dark though, with sexual abuse and shit.
Yeah. Probably the best NIS game outside of the Disgaea series. The Western release of the sequel is coming out in a couple weeks.
Damn. I should probably actually play through the game then. Just been lying there and I ended up never getting around to it.
About how long is it?
I spent a little over 100 hours on it, but you could probably do it quicker if you don't frick around as much as I did.
Yeah, it's great. Apparently the sequel is considered a kamige.

whoa that's a lot of tacos, you sure you can live with nothing for the rest of the year?
What's the best Disgaea game?
Story wise? 1. Gameplay wise? 5
I want Metallia's game
$75USD, you mean.
Still, 65% off is pretty damn good.
How are the PC ports of the first few games? Only ever played the first Disgaea on PS2 and I enjoyed it.
Just more reasons not to bother with the PS2 Disgaea games.
except D1 Complete is a soulless piece of shit. stcik to steam for that one.
>D1 Complete
What were they even thinking with that port? They had the perfect chance to add a lot of the QoL features and gameplay from the later games but just blew it all on the new artstyle.
do zoomers even know, let alone care, that disgaea exists?
can't see the series lasting much longer without a major revamp a la fire emblem
6 was supposed to be that big revamp
Fire Emblem didn't even do a major revamp, they just added romance, which wasn't even a series first, and Awakening luckily released at really good time since the 3DS had so little to play that people were buying anything just to use the system.
>Obscure JRPG series may become even more obscure
based, now I can be certain that Flonne is my wife and my wife only
i just don't understand because with the acceptance of anime into normalgay spheres you would think a unique colourful series like disgaea would be perfect to target to the current age of zoomers (toning down some of the grindier aspects of the gameplay to "modernize" it)
even just an anime would popularize it a lot, the IP is so utterly and completely poorly handled and deserves better
Zoomers are ironic weebs, so otaku pandering stuff like Disgaea is cringe to them.
Disgaea already got an anime adaptation almost two decades ago.
So what dood another series wouldn't hurt. Anime sells games/manga shit its why most anime gets made in the first place its just a gaint AD for an IP.
>Coomer OVA.
>Tons of dicky
>Really lewd scense with Etna
>Ripped/stolen/lost swimsuits everywhere even the shotas
Yeah that would totally work and sell. Going all out with a full series would kinda be suicidal. They could have sucked the netflix teat a few years ago man to animate something. Man what a cursed IP dood.
>even the shotas
based
I mean it is a popular series with girls too dood. tumblr really liked disgaea for some odd fricking reason.
Disgaea doesn't have a Slice of Life waifu type character though, which is what current anime(s) require for them to become FotM bandwagons
I wish that was me dood.
>Add shit to cart
>Steam freezes up and fails to work whenever I do anything related to cart
Anyone else experiencing this?
If you guys had to pick, should I buy D5 and replay it for a second time or should I get Labyrinth of Refrain instead?
If you already played 5 you should move on to Labyrinth
LoR is legitimately the best NIppon Ichi game.
And the Sequel is coming out ina few weeks.
you only need one because every single disgea game is exactly the same
I tried playing the first game on psp a long time ago and found everything way too complicated.
It's not that the game is unbalanced, it's that there's multiple ways in which you can break the game if you want, and figuring out how to break the game is a lot of the fun.
just get 4, it's got the most fun characters
Did the games not sell on PC? Where is my 3 and DD2?
Any with romance options?
If you ignore how shit the 3d looks. Is D6 worth playing?
are they worth playing then anons?
Yes it's a lot of fun, and just because you can grind your character into a 9999 perfect soldier doesn't mean you need to to enjoy the game.
bro should I move to Merida from Australia
Seems like a good deal, but I probably wouldn't buy all the games at once. I love Disgaea, but it's not the kind of game you're going to marathon back to back. You play a Disgaea game for hundreds of hours until you lose your mind and then put it down for a couple years until the next game is released and you're ready to do it again.
is it possible to "mess up" characters in this series? it would assault my autism to no end if I mindlessly start grinding only to realize I fricked up the stat growth of a character
can everyone basically max out with enough time?
anyone? it's the make or break answer as to whether I'll play this
As long as you know which of their stats is the most important for their job you can't do much harm.
no, theres no locking shit in for good. the worst you can ever do is allocate stats in reincarnation in a way you dislike later on. but then you just reincarnate again.
why does this moronic song in a goofy comedy game make me so sad
I never understood the appeal. You just grind out the same story maps until you can beat the story then you just... keep replaying it? Am I missing something like random maps or something? What's the point of getting stronger numbers with no end goal?
>am I missing something?
>like random maps or something?
Yes.
Only the hit of the hand item matters. When shopping for them, look for ones with marksman innocents for best results
Also, stealing from behind has way better chances than from any other direction
>dislike your stats
>just reincarnate
FRICK OFF BUDDHA
I beat the main story of 1 and Etna mode but moved onto 2 without doing the post game, am i missing out on that much?
just thousands of floors of item world, and maybe 10 actual maps.
Tyrant Valvatorez is the strongest MC.
You know the actual answer
So why was Disgaea 3 not ported to PC?
it was never that popular, more priority to port the other games, then the NIS Classics, and whatever new stuff.
It'll probably happen eventually. hopefully D2 as well
Having played it the past week it would not pass modern SJW's and need to be re-translated.
It has more edgy jokes than this.
Holy shit lol, yeah D3 will never be rereleased.
I played them all for free on emulators already tho
which disgaea is the best now? kinda want to get back into it since i got a deck now, played 1 and 2 when it released on PS2 back then
Play 4. Do it for the deenz.
I LOVE Sardines
What a wonderful food
Most people will agree that 4 is the high point for the series. 5 is whatever, and then 6 is La Creatura.
wait i thought the one with bunny dicky is the best one?
it's the best grind/gameplay wise but story is weak
4
Someone should AI him doing the Deenz theme
I couldn't get into disgaea 1. any tips for maybe trying it again?
the first few chapters are a bit of a slog, it only starts getting interesting around chapter 4/5 when the main group dynamic starts kicking in
I'll try to make it that far again
What put you off from it?
Some parts of the game are pretty obtuse, like the Master-Pupil system (which is pretty important to make Flonne a good unit) and unlocking more generic classes.
The Item World is really useful both as a distraction from the main game if you've hit a wall and to get stronger to overcome it, leveling up an item just 10 levels can give huge benefits and is a lot less tedious than actual level grinding.
Only haven't played D6 or D4
I never really understood all the hate for 3. It was the first Disgaea I ever really sunk a lot of time into outside of beating the main story and I have nothing but fond memories of the game and its cast. It's definitely one of the weaker titles in the series for sure though.
Rozalin supremacy
disgaea 7 is looking to be a boobs oriented game from what ive seen
I missed the presentation earlier. Does it look better than 6 or is that just what we have now?
yeah 6 was just an experimental phase.
monster weapons, weapon skills, better animations, very noticeable performance improvements on the switch, home lawn, escrow, percent %signs % %
>very noticeable performance improvements on the switch, home lawn, escrow, percent %signs % %
Can you legally prescribe marriages in the state of Kansattica?
i think theres a japanese demo out too.
isn't 7 already fricking out in JP
yet no mention of an EN release anywhere in sight
goddamn
theyre aiming for a fall release for the language of kings.
I might just buy Disgaea 7 afterall..
Reminder than any true Disgaea fan is a Demoflat chad.
doing a lot with a little is a test of strategic skill, but its also important to know when to simply overwhelm.
Go to bed auntie, you're drunk on tatos again.
Boobas only look good on short women
I'm a labiahairian
Aside from Etna, all Disgaea girls are pure, with untouched innies.
Why did they stop adding extra stories for complete editions since D5?
Damn, I haven't seen a good dancing gif paired well with a song in awhile. I have 1, 4, 5, and 6 on my Switch, but now I want to pull out my Vita and play 3 again. And I just started Digimon Survive earlier today...
I want to sex Devil Flonne and Nekomatas
>Disgaea 5 is $10 with discounts
>Disgaea 6 is still $45 even with discounts
Who are they kidding with this price? I know it's the latest game in the series, but I wouldn't buy 6 unless it's lower than $20 considering the gameplay downgrade.
Anyone else still excited for Disgaea 7 after the train wreck that was Disgaea 6?
ARE THE GAMES EVEN FUN THOUGH? THEYJUST LOOK LIKE GENERIC ANIME GAMES, WHATS THE BIG DEAL HERE? WHAT MADE YOU FALL IN LOVE ANON WITH DISGAEA
The gameloop of grinding the different characters is fun
Disgaea was probably the first time I was playing a game and thought, "this game is really just all about grinding", and I realized I enjoyed grinding and that was the fun part. And then I went on to play a few thousand item world levels and played every other mainline game in the series. The humor and aesthetic of the first game really made it work, though.
You probably should just buy one Disgaea game and see if you enjoy it. If you know you'll enjoy them, then maybe buy it?
Just buy 4 if you wanna see the gameplay.
Get the rest if you wanna see the story
lots of conflicting posts here
so should i get 4 or 5?
if i get the whole bundle im going to end up playing none of them, ty
let me put it this way, which of the two is better and would make me want to play the rest
5 complete
I started with 4 on the Vita and was hooked
5 wasn't out yet at the time
I didn't even finish 5 so I'd say go for 4
Depends.
4 has more fun characters, while still having som of the best gameplay
5 has less fun characters, but is the peak gameplay of the series
5 have some quality of life stuff. Otherwise it's mostly just different flavors. If you intend to just play the main campaign, 4, but if you're a grind autist that see yourself potentially falling for the grinding memes, 5. There are some different mechanics, but for the most part they're pretty similar. I played 5 a long time ago, so I don't remember much about the campaign maps, but I thought 4 had more interesting maps overall for the main campaign, at least.
4
Which Disgaea is best if I like to focus on or solely use generic characters?
Wait for 7 it's a return to form after the shitshow 6 was
https://disgaea.jp/7/character_generic.html
Unironically what that other anon said, or D5
You can get any skills on any units via squads, and leveling their stats is independent of which class they are
DD2 had similar mechanics to this, but wasn't as flexible when it comes to evilities so your generic's class really mattered when it came to fighting Baal. This is also why I think D5 is the best one, you can make an overpowered prinny and singlehandedly kill the superboss just from all the work put into them alone
I fricking loved the classy+whacky demon aesthetic Disgaea did in general. 2 was my favorite.
>Laharl eating food infront of a CRT.
God. It's like looking into a time capsule, in rare videogame anime intro form.
You're now remembering the Bad End and that munching sound...
Seriously, what were they thinking ?
I hope you played with jap audio for screams.
Unfortunatly, i did. It really took me off-guard. Nearly made me abandon the game.
Are these games worth playing if I don't care about the story?
Yeah. You can skip everything if you want to and don't need to grind to beat the story either.
The story is like 30% of the games. The real game starts at post game.
>raspberyl will forever be the dedicated pay-to-win squad evility upgrade DLC character
it's not fair
Best NIS girl coming through
(Also her shota brother is cute and they should put him in Disgaea as well)
So was that PS3 game (DD2 or something) that nobody ever liked actually that bad? I heard it could even cause some actual serious software problems
Fire magic was bugged in a weird way that could melt your PS3.
Indictments? Never heard of em. You mean innocents?
1 ran fine for me. 2 crashed twice. Try PSP version, for most part it should be same as PC.
1 and 2 lack a lot of QoL from later games.
>All of the Disgaea games
>3
pretty alright, i guess.
ClaDun 2 costs 2€ at the moment and has a free demo. If you like 2d action with cool party building, custom sprites. give it a shot.
are the PC games censored?
Grinding alone on a Friday night? God you're pathetic
But if I don't grind then how will you get stronger?
semen
I think I'm gonna buy 5. Is there anything that I should know before going in if I've never played a Disgaea game before?
5 takes things pretty slowly, introducing its mechanics chapter by chapter for the most part, so you should be fine just playing it.
Awesome. Game looks pretty fun, I enjoyed the grindy aspects of Siralim, so this looks kinda similar in that respect.
just tried disgaea 1, it had graphical glitches so i refunded it
might try emulating it instead
Should've installed SpecialK/Pretty Prinny
Why would you pay for this shit when you can just emulate it?
Is D6 worth it or just get 5?
Am on c so can mod if needed
It's because of the different style that's pretty unique to D1. D2 kept it a little bit but then the style became what it is now by D3
i don’t think
Replaying Disgaea 1 on my fricking tablet and as much as I love Harada's new art, there's something about his Flonne portraits in the first game (assuming he's the one that drew them) that have this pure mother energy. It's such a perfect design.
