It was always one of the most popular and most loved FF games even back in the day. Everyone was raving about it, it was constantly reappearing in gaming mags and discussions. Ganker was mostly parroting one e-celeb who didn't like it.

He should have blacked out 10. 7-8-9 (along with Chrono Cross) are the apotheosis of jrpg gameplay and story. 10 was the beginning of the end for the entire genre.
FFX paved the way for XIII but they exacerbated every problem X had in that game.
This, honestly playing FF XIII made me appreciate FF X, which I had similar complaints to back at the time (too linear, Sphere Grid sucks, these characters suck, Blitzball sucks). But I replayed it recently with Japanese dub and Expert Sphere Grid, and that experience was much better than original PS2 release. Linearity still bothered me a bit, but at least visually FF X is really cool to look at, you aren't just walking hallways of various degree of greyness, you are walking various hallways of various colors.
It's funny that they tease you with better progression systems in both sequels for those games. Both of which were shorter games on a lower budget.
I still think the jobs system from X-2 is one of the best in the whole series.
Linearity didn't suck as much in X because that game still has towns and npcs for you to speak with (really, that's some standard jrpg linearity). In XIII each empty hallway led you from cinematic onto another cinematic.

FF X's original Western release on PS2 had only standard Sphere Grid, meaning characters could go only on set path for majority of the game, which essentially resulted in the same character progression as Final Fantasy 1, except instead of being fully automated you have to unlock predetermined stats manually for each and every one. With Expert Sphere Grid you can take characters on wildly different paths that can make it a bit more interesting until you max them out, but you really mostly use it for Black Mage Yuna.

Also, I just realized what I typed out and realized how it could be confusing, I didn't mean to imply that FF 1 has predetermined stats, because it doesn't, what I meant is that sphere grid in its linear form is barely any different from gaining a level in FF 1, except you have to manually gain stats each time AND they are also predetermined, so you follow exactly same path you replay the game each time. In that sense, it's even less engaging than FF 1 leveling up.

IX is better than 95% of JRPGs but it's the worst of that bunch and I'm sincerely tired of pretending it's not. God damn Square was at their peak during that stretch. Those 4 are some of my all time favorite games.
IX has the best story out of all of them and the best characters. AP system is the best too, as it has the customizability of materia without having you risk making all of your characters basically the same mechanically. If the gameplay was less shitty it'd be perfect.
I don't like only one aspect of AP system which is the only thing I don't like about Materia either, which is why I think FF8 is overlooked in my opinion in that regard especially. With both AP system and Materia the grinding is unavoidable, it's something that must be done to customize the characters however you like. AP system is probably the system I would call the best in the series, but that aspect, I don't understand how people just overlook it.

It's easy to say in retrospect that what they were doing was totally retarded, but you have to remember that the tech you have in your hands today wasn't even fathomed back then. A lot of the techniques they were using in the PSX/2 era were allowing them to stretch the hardware past what even Sony thought was possible, they never meant for the games to have to run in an environment outside of the PSX hardware much less stretched on a 1080p monitor.
I love FF8, but given the way PCs were already going with people pulling [email protected], it's inexcusable.
I mean if you feel that way whatever, but all it does is make it clear that you have a gross misunderstanding of what it means/meant to develop a game for console hardware.
They continued to do it years later, though. That's why FFX and X-2 are locked to 30fps. If you change the framerate, the cutscenes desync (which they didn't even fix for PAL versions, which had to run 5fps slower). It's bad decisions, plain and simple, and FFX has no excuse since they'd already done The Bouncer and there had already been plenty of other demonstrations of how to develop PS2 games.

To be fair, a lot and I mean A LOT of japs will often tie framerate a certain point because it was never meant to be ran at a higher degree. That's not even a Square problem its just that they never considered people would actually want to play at something over 15-20 FPS over the years

I think the majority of the Final Fantasy games don't have a source code in existence, there's no higher rez version of the prerendered backgrounds, similar to what happened with Chrono Cross and the music in SMT3.

I'd say go for emulation on Vita, because all re-releases and remasters are heavily based on rather poorly ported PC ports from late 90s, they improved them significantly since their releases, but you just can't beat the originals, their faults even out if not make them less preferable choices outright.

Ah fuck, I really wish I could give direct links to what I am referring to, so it's fair for you to assume I am talking out of my ass. I just remember years ago I overdosed on behind the scenes stuff of Final Fantasy, and I vividly remember that the pattern of Laguna and group affecting Squall and group in similar way Jecht and co affect Tidus and co, it basically wasn't just a coincidence. And particularly Irvine was meant to be much older and actually hang around with both Laguna and Squall, but then they decided to make all of Squall's group roughly same age and I believe it was Ward who usurped Irvine's role as the third member, and rewrite was really swift which is why Ward became mute, the dialogue for him in his section of the games just wasn't written because it was assumed Irvine would be there. And eventually, during development of FF X Auron essentially usurped idea for Irvine to be carry over party member from past group to current group. There are a lot of points of similarities like that that were cut due to rushed production of FF8. I think it very well might have been highlighted in Ultimania.
But what about the canned FFVIII gaiden? Surely that would've had just as much or more influence on VIII and X's relationship?

FFX was originally not meant to be a FF game. It was called Project 17 but when Squaresoft realized they don't have anything for the next big thing, they repurposed it and promoted it to be the main focus as the next FF.

Dunno about that, it's true that Laguna's storyline is good, but I genuinely resonated with Ellone because of how it's structured, I realized I was in the same boat when there was a childhood friend that I recognized, but we haven't seen each other for a long time and turns out he has all but forgotten about me, and quite frankly we became different people. So the game starts with Squall meeting Ellone, a girl he forgot he missed, who was his main goal to become stronger, and when he met her he couldn't even recognize her, that really hit me when I replayed it recently. Overall, storywise the only problem I have with the story is that they tried to shove this theme of forgetting where you come from into the GF memory loss, the way I interpreted it is that, like, imagine you decided to seriously start going to gym, you don't remember every session you make yet you become stronger, but it was just shoved with no particular elaboration which throws people in a loop which could've been done better.

I actually have to strongly disagree with that, as a person with parents who moved a lot I went through several schools and even kinder gardens, I don't remember majority of them, I don't remember most things or people I met when I was younger than 8. And hell, if you pay closer attention, the one guy who remembered them together as kids, Irvine, he did try to bring it up, but it's fucking awkward to come up to a person and say "HEY, REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE 7!" when the person doesn't even remember you, Selphie took it as if he was hitting on her. It's very well foreshadowed and played out realistically, at least from my experience (Irvine could've done a better job at trying to re-introduce himself to Selphie, but there's no good way to break the ice on that front, talking from genuine experience).

Cid was busy building the damn garden, which resulted in actual plot point I actually don't like (Norg). I can easily imagine how during that period Cid transformed in eyes of most kids from a foster parent to a headmaster quite easily, because that's the role he eventually had to fit into and that's the role they have come to associate him with NOW, in the present, regardless of the past.
But I don't think that's really a problem in the game in the same way it doesn't bother me in FF IX, because it was used to drive point that FF VIII are friends not because they were childhood friends, they were childhood friends who became friends as adults regardless of their past, which I think is beautiful, it embraces the theme of destiny (and I brought up IX because it tells similar story, but in directly opposite direction of escaping your fate, which is just as beautiful, but we're not talking about IX). VIII's story is very much story about fate inescapable, and such a small contrivance, well, I just don't know why it would ruin it for you.
Its a problem for me not for you. You enjoy it, whereas i see it as a huge flaw that makes me unable to enjoy the story, but even if i was ok with that part ff8 was still dragged down my bad game decisions like that slow ass floating garden padding everything out as it slowly floated its fucking ass across the screen.

For example, I don't like the movie Looper, it's a well put together movie, I get what it's going for, and I don't like it, but I wouldn't call it bad, and a lot of people enjoy it. Balamb Garden has a hitbox that makes you think you can pass through things you cant and things you can pass through seem likes it stupid to even try.

Normal is her running away, abnormal is when she fights back, what she seeks is her own perfect world where shes alone so nothing can hunt her down

low magic means drawing 0-3 spells, taking forever, other than refine makes drawing useless if you know about it
levelling up to 30 makes enemies have the strongest spells so it's a spike in difficulty, then levelling more means enemies have a lot of hp

the flashback scenes are the only good part of the game. Where you play as Squall's dad who is objectively cooler than Squall. Also opening up the evil magic lamp that you just find in your inventory is a pretty good moment in the game.
The plot is kino and so is the music. Shame about the convoluted battle system tho
