I mean if there wasn't a situation where it's needed, I can't really blame the players for that. As I get more and more games in I feel that custom monsters and items are generally waste of time, as the players can generally overcome it unexpectedly. Therefore, random encounters and tables are much more useful, efficient, and fun.

    >Players want combat
    >Are absolutely horrible at combat and have zero teamwork

      > Players want to explore the world
Give them 2 NPCs arguing over where to send them, a hint they may go the third or fourth direction on a quest tied to 2 or more characters' backstories or motivations (they have those, right?), and present them with a choice of where to go. Make them accidentally leave the safe path, get stranded and have to survive in the wilderness without the gear they've decided they don't need (if it's their decision)
      > Players want combat
Give them combat. Make first encounter dumb cowardly goblins who flee if you kill their leader and a couple fellows, or wound them bad, make second one weak but not cakewalk, third one actual challenge, fourth one hard to win without teamwork.
      > Players want to roleplay
Let them roleplay among themselves for flavour, let their roleplaying matter when they interact with NPCs.
      >Players are so brain rotted from D&D they need the GM to push the story along instead of the players making their own choices
Advance the plot into the situation where they have to make a choice, turn that railroad into a railway network
      >Players who get mad at the GM when threatened with danger only to put themselves in even worse situations for the lols
Wow. I play with a literal schizophrenic manchild, and even he doen't act like this. Anyway, make their actions have consequences. Long-term consequences.
      >When something is clearly bothering the players be it me as a GM or being caused by another player but they never speak up
Ask them for feedback after every session. Above mentioned schizo always does when he runs the game, and it helps him improve sometimes. If players say nothing, it's on them.

Those kind of dorks are worse than Critical Role drama club kiddies, who at least have some idea of what they want(even if it's unrealistic).

They beg for a "sandbox" and complain about railroading and then just sit around doing nothing in games. I've seen it so many times that I think "railroading" and "sandbox" are just verbal static that doesn't mean anything. Like girls who say they want a "nice guy" or boomers who say they miss the personalized service of the neighbor's corner store they went to as kids but beeline for the cheapest slop possible at Wal-Mart.

It can be fun to craft a sandbox setting for the fun of it though, even though the people you play with might never engage with it. Or at least that's how I've tried to start looking at things.

Here's the template png my man, go for it.
The border breaks can be a bit of a pain in the ass, because of backgrounds or a lot of art cutting off just a tiny bit too much of something. That said it can be an interesting challenge to finagle. Rubedo's violet mist fade-out thing was only a last minute hackjob because the jacket in that art passed out of frame.
Using Tools->Color->Transparency in google image search options is your best friend to find stuff that won't be a headache.

              Anonymous

I know there's a few tools online to remove the backgrounds from images so I'll have a go at those first I reckon. Many thanks for the image and the advice!

                Anonymous

I've never much looked into those. Backgrounds aren't too bad, they're just not as piss easy as transparencies or the like, which involve maybe three select->Cut operations
Really the whole process for backgrounds amounts to
                >Center the thing
                >Crop roughly the parts you want to overlap
                >Cut everything extraneous outside the border
                >Erase the relevant bits of the border.
Sometimes you get something like the end of her spear here with the branches where it looks funky or jagged after you clear it. I've got a distortion effect for paint.net that just expands the current selection by one pixel at a time. I find that copying troublesome sections, rendering them entirely black or dark grey on a lower layer, and expanding them one or two pixels to outline stuff external to the border can work wonders for readability/jank reduction.
Even fricking with the background manually, it's maybe a ten minute job usually.

Weird, that horrific border noise doesn't exist in my working copy. I keep forgetting shit goes wrong when I copypaste transparencies directly with Ganker X.
...and now I've accidentally overwritten it. Oh well, was an example case anyway.

    >Exhibit B of prev point: players write their bg/personalities and the moment they realize they wrote boring personalities they change them midgame without telling me anything, with also taking them 2 years to finally tell me this
    >Players pretend solutions without giving them any or actively working towards them, then complain about what the NPCs "suggest" them
    >Players do not explore the world at all and expect to be spoonfed everything, to only complain when their lack of info bites them in the ass

      >I do not understand, why do some of you think Players are mouth breathers?
Because the majority are mouth breathers. All my years of STing, less than 10 players were actually cooperative players who thought through all their actions before doing things.

      Anonymous

As a GM I know where you're coming from. I master mostly shorter campaigns on a public discord server, so I have frequently changing players. Every now and then I encounter players that compete tasks ahead of schedule, easily solve the puzzles, actually use the tactical options the system offers in combat and generally take the initiative. Those are the greatest players ever.
Unfortunately 9 out of 10 players are unable to take initiative, don't know the rules and go bluescreen mode whenever I even hint a puzzle that's more complex than a key fetch quest. If I don't include at least one or two mouth breather routes in my adventures the majority won't go anywhere.
To further complicate things any player, no matter how good they appear at first, can turn into an absolute brainlet, without warning. My solution is to include the juicy stuff as optional content that can be discovered or implement modular elements once I realize that the PCs can handle them.

your gay edgelord ass named it "night breaker" really original. you're a piece of shit without a single original idea, you add nothing to the world around you. your girlfriend is with you because you called her once a day for 8 years and she finally gave up.

also if you stopped throwing a tantrum for FIVE FRICKING SECONDS you would have probably realized that the reason you heard your dad's voice when you used the sword was because he wasnt dead but instead you just threw a tantrum because you heard from an unreliable source that your father was dead. god i hate you Dan. you are the worst person i know in every way.

    >first session of a mecha-fantasy campaign
    >players stumble across a legendary ancient mech
    >party is an ancient robot, a career driver and mechanic, a historian, and a techno-empath
    >it takes me all but explicitly leaning on them to get one of them in the wienerpit somehow
    ???????

Maybe they just assumed that it being ancient meant it wasn't functioning.

An easily missed detail assuming it was just theater of the mind.

But you got them in the chair in the end so whatever you did worked.

The players want to get it to believe in itself enough to not need a pilot. I can't help but love them.

    >player
    >2 of the party wandered off on their own and died
    >only hear about it after the fact, no information
    >get sent on same quest to climb snowy mountain
    >given scrolls of warmth
    >scrolls scare away frost sprites
    >get to cave
    >find dead party members
    >frost sprites surround us and turn into frost wraiths
    >wraiths start kicking our asses
    >grab portal ring off dead party member and barely get out alive
    >realize months later we were meant to use the warmth scrolls to scare away the frost wraiths

Am I an idiot for not figuring that out sooner?

My players constantly b***h for new items while completely forgetting (!) old ones in their inventory.
Last session they needed something but one of the players had forgotten what he had so I ruled he lost his while inventory. People were shocked. No more Mr Nice GM. This shit has crossed all reasonable lines. I am tired of babysiting my players inventory and skills. Jesus Christ, we play roll under stat system! It is DEAD SIMPLE. You don't even have to add +1 to a roll. Just remember what you frickings have in your inventory! Man am I pissed! And don't get me started on special abilities.

Any of you guys having such a problem with players? I don't want to be funkiller but as a GM it is not my job to manage players characters.

Nah. Most of my players are equally as autistic as I am, and do shit like handle whole ass self-invented settlement building subsystems I didn't even ask for.
If you're playing in person, make 'em some item cards. If you're not, I just keep shit in a google spreadsheet pinned in the game chart. I need it for myself anyway.

    >had shit GM
    >players did everything in their power to try to not die, and still get targetted and killed if they were doing everything right
    >would consisently not matter in the grand scheme of things ot the point where NPCs wouldn't acknowledge us, or never liked talking to us. Even a lowly beggar had more honor than we did according to the DM.
    >frick this, game died, I started running with some new players but mostly players form other group.
    >try to put my best foot forward, reconciling, being nice, and otherwise trying to make sure my players had fun
    >get stomped all over and basically ignored, and when I let them know, I "ruined the campaign" for them."
    >Have to keep them leashed by a NPC at all times, otherwise they will literally begin murderhoboing and not care about my fun nor what I wanted to run.

We are completely amicable about what I wanted to run, and we communicate a lot, but then when it comes ot the actual game, no one wants to listen to me, or consider if I am having fun running this murder simulator for them.

    >Dark Heresy campaign

    >They constantly interrupt everything he says with sassy quips
