Why did no firstperson games ever capitalize on and expand the fluid firstperson combat and gameplay of this cult classic?

It’s actually a lot clunkier than this board cares to mention. There are definitely moments where it shines greatly but they are few and far between the other questionable design choices.
It's a 2005 game. Compared to the other titles of the time period it was fluid AF.
I replayed it in the summer and it still blue my dick away, deserves a spot on my top 5 OAT
Based. I agree it still holds up. Shame it never had much of an impact on firstperson titles. I imagine firstperson platformers in general could become incredibly popular with DMMM style movement and gameplay.
What's clunky about it?
lmao shut the frick up you moronic contrarian homosexual. There is no other first person game with melee combat as good as DM.
Clunky is a bit of a buzzword, but yes it's not amazing. Feedback on standard, non-charged attacks is really, really poor compared to something like Mordhau or Chivalry (it's about on par with Oblivion in this respect except with far less impactful sound effects) and your options become relatively limited against anything other than bog standard humanoid enemies who have by far the most fleshed out hit reactions etc., but also become less and less common as you progress through the game. It's hugely elevated by the ragdoll physics you get via stuff like staves' charged attacks, some of the magic spells and environmental traps. It's still decent but would probably benefit immensely from a sequel where the whole game is like the first handful of levels (i.e. the only ones webms are ever posted of, for good reason).
2006, and not really. Any number of games from around that time (and earlier) have combat systems and control schemes which aren't significantly different from those in modern action games.
>clunky is a buzzword
maybe on Ganker, gay
People don't care about good combat. The just want to CONSOOM goyslop.
I love being a goy.
Someone should make a first person hack n slash/character action game
>the fluid firstperson combat and gameplay
Dark Messiah absolutely doesn't have a good combat system. In fact engaging with the actual melee combat in this game is the most ineffective and boring way to play the game. The game is saved by the level design that has ledges, spikes and traps every few steps and the physics engine that lets you kick people into them or make them slip on ice.
I loved the Multiplayer too but it was the dumbest fricking shit ever I have to recognize.
>Undead faction has a "woops everyone that attacked falls to their deaths immediately" trap at their base map
>Good faction map isn't nearly as defensible
>Mages had one-shot abilities that covered both extreme long range, mid range and close range without any feasible counters
>Priests were super fricking annoying and almost unkillable but had no dps
In my PC it always crashes on the 4th or 5th mission. I tried everything to solve it but nothings work
PRESS F TO KICK THE UNDEAD
They couldn't possibly made a better intro to set the overall tone of the game than that.
>Here's your first enemy, kick it down the hole in front of it
On another note, I'd recommend cheating all the skillpoints early on if you're tired of the game. It sucks that you can't play with high level skills until there's like an hour left of the game.
first person melee is kinda clunky on a monitor because theres no depth perception. these games cheat for you a lot of the time, landing hits that would have no business landing "in reality". maybe if VR ever actually takes off we'll see new first person melee shit.
SOVL
Unbelievably K i N O!
I played this for the Succubus gf
I remember choosing her ending and jerking off furiously to it.
>hot flirty chick inside you head turns out to be a succubus the world's best dad gives you
I was so ready
>she stops being hot and nags you for the rest of the game
Completely ruined
Overrated and tedious after first "wow" impression of first few levels. Frankly I've forced myself to finish it just to make a tick against "played that widely lauded on the interwebz hidden gem cult classic never getting old game". Really a pity I had no posibility to play it in its prime, cause it surely aged like fine vinegar.
idiot
Care to elaborate on redeeming points of the title? You react like I've trampled your idol or insulted personally. I'm sorry if it chafes at you, but that's just my impression. I've installed with just this kind of positive attitude and soaring expectations, but in the end it became a slog. Maybe magic build was a wrong choise, but oh well...
You have autism, don’t you? Like clinical, lowfunctioning autism.
>i disagree
elaborate
>i disagree and i hate you
i come here to avoid talking to women
Doesn't sound like you have much trouble avoiding women, pal
No one can intellectualize a counter to your soured experience that will make any difference. You pushed through despite not clicking with it which is like walking with gravel in your shoes. I can tell you a hike is the most amazing experience you could dream of but you'll only remember your feet hurting.
>I forced myself because abstract goal that means I play virtual entertainment despite not being entertained
Just say it's shit and begone fool.
