It's shutting down, yes, but that means very little in the gaming world. That's merely a chance for it to rise like a phoenix in a glorious burst of light in the future. Streaming can and will be bigger and stronger than ever.

Why would they do that hosting a file for download is magnitudes cheaper than running a game streaming service, the likely evolution is a streaming only console option which will fail as hard as stadia

There needs to be some benefits to owning nothing like steam has but stadia offered nothing except making you rebuy games on a worse service that was obviously going to be shut down in 1-2 years

stadia's business model blew ass from the start

      >you have to pay a sub
      >you have to buy all your games again
      >because stadia is like it's own console you need games to support cross save with stadia if you want to go from playing one game on stadia to console or to pc
      >if a game doesn't have crossplatform multiplayer you're fricked
      >devs have to patch stadia separately and it's the last one to get patched consistently

compare it to geforce now where you can either use it for free or pay for a sub and you don't have to buy your games again, you can use your existing saves because it just uses steam cloud saves, it really made no sense to use stadia

How the frick did a gaming platform whose prime downside is INPUT DELAY make it out of QA testing in the first place?

      Anonymous

Bottomless pockets of a greedy corporation that ran tests in it's top-of-the-line testing environments instead of bringing it down to the standard user level. Google thought it could put the minimal effort and rack in the cash, I'm glad they just wasted millions on this.

The input delay isn't nearly as noticeable as I expected for xbox, but the graphical downgrade is. I still have not found any use for streaming though.

I guess they really REALLY didn't want news getting out, pretty scummy of google but at least they're being the big man and refunding everybody's hardware and software purchases.
I'm not defending google at all though, don't get me wrong, but I would imagine if they told developers Stadia was going to shut down January 2023, news would have leaked sooner than they wanted. Guess they should have just told everybody 3 months ago when they said rumors were false.

      Anonymous

At the time, they probably were "technically" false. As in, it was in a fail state but the decision hadn't been made yet, so anyone saying it was a fact wouldn't be honest for another season.
If devs really didn't hear shit until today and had games coming out, but the decision was literally made three months ago, it seems like there might be some contractual issues some of them could sue over.
