Do you consider using this map cheating?

Do you consider using this map cheating? It came with the game, but i've heard it was labeled as a sort of last resort. Other than naming the dungeons, it does give away plenty secrets.

    >Do you consider using this map cheating?
    No.
    >It came with the game, but i've heard it was labeled as a sort of last resort.
Whoever said that was a dumb moron.

You will inevitably hit a point in some game at some time when you're just wandering around without a fricking clue to the point that it's just not fun or interesting. I don't care how hard-core you think you are, this is simply catastrophic extinction of all value a game has to occupy your time. But it should be a tool, not a crutch. Peek at a map with specific intent.

    >It came with the game, but i've heard it was labeled as a sort of last resort.
Yes, the text that says that is printed on the other side of the fold-out map/hint paper in your image. The paper came folded and sealed shut with a sticker you had to cut/tear to open it (visible on the right in this photo)

      >If you believe in yourself and your inner strength
I remember reading this when I was eight years old and not having a clue what they were talking about. I think I might have asked my mum to explain it to me. But I do remember opening it, not sure if straight away or not.

    > It came with the game

The original FDS release did not have a map

      Yes, it's cheating.

A lot of burger releases of rpgs and adventure games came with guides like this because they knew how stupid Americans are and feared they'd return the game if they got stuck too soon.

That's a pretty stupid assumption. I said the original FDS release did not have a map, but the cartridge re-release did, even in Japan. I had it CIB myself before I sold it.

          That's kind of interesting
Is it a translation of the English one?

and btw, the ones that complained when a game was too hard were the Japanese, not the Americans. See the reception for Dragon Quest 2, Final Fantasy II and III, Mother, and plenty of others RPGs. Meanwhile in America people complained when a game was too easy and challenge was used in marketing and in reviews gave better score to games.

you heard wrong. nintendo power (and many others) published walkthroughs, maps and guides for this abhorrent game.

      nobody cares about the fds.

It's actually not. The game is designed around making your own map, and only localizations included a full map of Hyrule.

      >It's actually not.
      >The game is designed around making your own map
so.. it was designed to be used with a map? fantastic, dumb frick. glad you sorted that out for us.

As always in the savestate discussions: yes it's cheating, but no, cheating isn't necessarily bad, though it sometimes is. The question of whether a particular act of cheating is bad is more interesting than the question of whether it's cheating. No, I know, there's room to argue about what the developers intended and about how important manuals sometimes were back then - I'm not saying this Zelda map is obviously and objectively a cheating tool from every possible perspective. I think it is cheating, and I'm right, but again, the real question is whether or not a player should do it, not whether or not it's cheating.

No I don't consider it cheating, but it's kind of like spoilers. I think it's more enjoyable to make your own map. I can't articulate why, but it really enriches the experience. The Japanese version of the game only included a map to the first two dungeons, I don't know why the American version included a map of the entire overworld.

No, the game is designed around you using that map.
