I'll buy from my local retro store if they have what I'm looking for. The owner is pretty cool and I'm pretty sure he lurks this board

Only PS2 games because it's cheap.

For the rest I either emulate or lurk around in garage sale

ergh, when I'm impulisve but I'd term the condition of the majority of them as "fart carts" (cartridges that look like a child took a fricking diarrhea shit on them). Also they do a poor job of cleaning anything, and it's fairly gross. Regardless I've sort of taken my local vidya store to the cleaners by gaming their trade-in policy. (going after items they mispriced) (trading them my most disgusting and ugly cartridges/shovel ware.)

why on earth would anyone buy anything from these places?

my local vidya story is actually in my opinion a very special place, the owner seems to be a good man, and is very creative. I genuinely believe the people in my area love the community the store fosters so much that they are content paying the markup knowing they are keeping a business they love alive, but really this guy has earned it it's an amazing place.

he literally uses his business to do good for the community, and I appreciate that. He is creative, and I'll describe him as a literal mad man, with some of his business ventures/ fun shit he pulls in his store.

as to fun shit he pulls, he's got a gacha dispenser full of discount vouchers, I love that he's gamefied shit in his fricking store. Also has a point's system where if you can get their merch that you get a discount for wearing when you buy something, feels like I have a fricking powerup item from a game on.

my local game store is great, I've gotten a ton of games from them. I really like brick and mortar game stores, there's a certain fun to rifling through and seeing what random games jump out at me. Their prices are lower than online, and the owner will negotiate too if you wanna haggle, he's given me discounts for buying a lot or paying in cash, ect. I guess good management makes the biggest difference with stores like these

It's life, man, people are inherently more inclined to give special deals to people they're friendly with, especially with hobby stuff.
Now, I'm not saying you should bend over and take it with a smile while getting ripped off, some places are just shit and it'll never pay off to repeatedly cough up $99 for dirt common games, BUT, if you know a place where prices are still sorta reasonable, it can really pay to be friendly with the people running it. Don't need to suck their dick or anything, but if they're not busy with anything, make some small talk about the stuff you're buying or selling, worst case you'll get to know someone you can talk old games with.

It may sound like a boomer thing to say, but we're social animals, networking pays, be that for jobs or hobbies.

I did during the early to mid 2010s retrogamer boom. There were two stores in my city and I'd go once a month and try to get a deal either on not well-known games (le "hidden gems"), classics I missed in my collection (cheaper than ebay), and many rare bootlegs which were ridiculously cheap (famiclone Super Maruo, SNES Pokemon Stadium, etc.)

Then prices became too stupid and I started collecting and reselling vintage clothing. I used to see both owners still looking for games at thrifts and fleas up to 2018 but then they moved on.

      >I used to see both owners still looking for games at thrifts and fleas up to 2018 but then they moved on.
absolutely fricking stupid. people going to a store to resell the same thing at their store for a higher price. this is why I gave up on physical retro games. morons who just want to make a quick buck got into the business to make a quick buck. in the end they've just fricked the entire market. now even stupid games no one wants are listed for ridiculous prices

        Anonymous

made sense financially for them. They got a handful of very rich kids and PMCs they could constantly sell to, and at their peak they were just moving other collectors entire collections back and forth. Not a long-term business at all. No clue what they might be doing right now.

Last thing I knew about one of them was quite crazy. On his last year in business he rented a store with some other guy who sold TCGs and weeboo stuff. They split expenses but after a few months, the retrodude disappeared leaving the TCGuy hanging with all retrostock inside the store. So TCGuy started selling the retrostock to pay for the retrodude, until the latter heard he was selling a Little Samson copy for like $1200. A few nights later, retrodude appeared when the store was closing with 7 thugs, hold the TCGuy and loaded a truck with all the stuff.

Luna Video Games off El Cajon Blvd in San Diego sucks hard. I know you guys lurk here, but seriously stop having all your games face that giant window. The artwork gets all sunbleached and the cases get brittle. I'd check your store out more often if you got your shit together. The Luna in Chula Vista is good though, pricey, but that's to be expected.

Depends on what you think over priced and reasonable is. You're not picking up many games for under 5 bucks anymore, but there are plenty of games to pick up around the 10~15 dollar range. Unless you're hyper fixated on titles that go for a pretty penny like Resident Evil 1 long box, Earthbound, and so on.

I used to have a Replays near me. They always had reasonable prices. The last year they were open they had no stock because no one was trading anything in. It was basically a place were people would come to get shit to flip on Ebay. So it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't. I don't really feel bad for these shops though. I remember I went to one where they had boxes under the tables of all the good shit. So I got out a box and started digging through shit. I had a guy come up to me and say that stuff wasn't inventoried.
    >"So you're saying it's not for sale?"
    >"No, it's just we haven't looked it up."
    >"dafuq you mean 'you haven't looked it up'?"
It was obvious he knew exactly he was implying. I just asked him "why don't you guys just sell on Ebay then?" and walked out without buying anything. Now I just hunt fleamarkets and garage sales. People with dedicated game/card/söy "nerd" memorabilia are the ones who look up Ebay prices. You can tell just by looking. Usually the boomers that primarily sell DVDs/records/CDs are the guys with actual deals.

Sometimes, my local has prices about on par with Ebay, and I can actually hold the game in my hand before I buy it. I've already got 99% of the actual "big" retro games I ever plan on buying though. My favorite thing to do is buy cheap cartridge games I've never heard of based on the cover art alone. I actually saw a guy get kicked out for admitting he was buying a bunch of stuff to sell on ebay for a few dollars more one time, pretty based imo.

I sometimes try to because I like seeing things properly before I buy them, but in terms of selection, price, return policy, and even knowledge, they usually suck major ass and are generally a waste of gas.
The selection part in particular has gotten bad in the last few years. What's the point of having a physical store if you don't stock the fricking place. Surely even doing some questionable ebay stocking is better than relying entirely on trade-ins from Brad Mcmoron's ex wife and hoping for something other than FIFA and Madden collections? Gee maybe people just aren't trading in their vintage shit for 15% value like dopefiends as much as they used to?

No. There's one store in my city and it's a shitty little hole in the wall with the usual selection of massively overpriced crap that's only open at bizarre inconvenient hours. The guy creeped me out and once muttered at me to never come back as I was leaving. I obliged him. That was 5 years ago and I haven't bought a retro game since. I emulate exclusively. The retro game market is a magnet for scumbags and socially maladjusted weirdos.

curious to know what /vr/ people have been to GameZone in Hillsdale NJ and what they thought of it. thats the only one ive been to a lot nd have picked some okay stuff there. i think the guy does well cause it's kind of a big suburban sprawl area with lots of people where all the /vr/ hardware and games have been collecting for decades. people go in there and sell their shit

side note, ive also enraged some different vr game store owner by standing at the counter and offering the kids and moms more money than what they just heard from the guy at the counter. Example, this is how i got a cartridge of castlevania IV back in the year 2013:
      >kid walks in with mom, kid is young and mom is yyounger mom age late 30s early 40s platinum blonde and looks dumb as fricking rocks
      >for some reason they have a castlevania IV kart they are trying to sell, probably belonged to moms ex husband or some shit and he left it at the house and they didnt know what to do with it
      >guy at cash register
      >"i'll give you $15"
      >me standing 3 feet away, interjecting myself into the transaction
      >"how about $20?"
      >kid and mom give it to me
      >store owner is reeing
      >kicks me out
I don't care, i got castlevania IV for a steal. i wound up beating it on a crt in my basement right b4 i left for college
