I don't really gel with it's hardcore JRPG/monster partner systems but I love it's aesthetics.

Yeah, a lot. One of my favorite games of all time

Yeah it's cool but midgame is a chore. Underpass of Ginza - Kabukicho Prison bores me to tears.
Also, your former friends never shut the frick up. I get they are trying to win you over to agree with their "reason", but Jesus their lectures and rantings are insufferable. The game almost steers you into DE/TDE by default

Yea I do, but I didn't finish it. Got about 47 hours in and got to a gimmicky boss fight that basically demanded the use of some skills that none of my demons had. I forget the exact circumstances but I wasn't able to easily fuse what I needed and it would probably take an hour or two to get ahold of the right demons for the job. Just sort of take a break from it after that and never came back, I'll probably finish it one day. Beat Digital Devil Saga 1 even though I don't think it was as good as Nocturne. The HD remaster has worse aesthetics (lighting, font etc) but the manual skill selection is awesome. Emulating it or playing the HD version is fine either way.

It's very good but I would have preferred if it was a 1st person dungeon crawler like the other SMT games or the devil summoner games.
I know there's a way to use a 1st person camera but the movement is still slow/clunky.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. Can be a slog sometimes, but that's how most old Megaten are.

I'm sorry. I got flittered by the Ikebukuro Prison part and never beat the game. Up until then I thought it was fun.

I like some Megami Tensei spinoffs better than it, but it's easily my favorite mainline SMT game

Yes. It's one of my favorites. It's an unusually difficult JRPG that doesn't compromise or hold your hand. It is very, very easy to permanently ruin your main character's build, with no second chances or rerolls. Enemy ambushes can be brutal, and enemies regularly use instant death spells.

The setting is great. I love the scenery. I also liked how it was basically the last "pure gameplay" MegaTen game before the franchise turned to more story-based stuff like DDS, then later amplified it with Persona 3/4. You're basically just running around laying waste to hordes of demons.

I do wish the encounter rate were slightly lower, and the EXP gains were a bit higher, so you still get tough boss encounters but don't need to grind as much. It does get a bit grindy, and there are a lot of random encounters.

I loved everything but the 3D demons. I can't go back to 3D after palying the animated 2D version

I know the PC port has problems, but is it still better than the original or should I just emulate the PS2 version instead?

The HD remake for PC/console is casualized kiddy shit for personagays. It also has a zoomerfied translation. Isamu acts like a Black person

        Literally your entire post.
        >The HD remake for PC/console is casualized kiddy shit for personagays.
It's literally not. The only gameplay change is that skills inherited from demon fusion are selectable instead of random. This isn't casualized whatsoever, it's just a QOL change that is almost unanimously praised. There's DLC to help you grind and a new easy difficulty but those are both easily ignored, the game itself is identical to the PS2 version in every other way
        >It also has a zoomerfied translation.
A shit ton of dialogue is identical to the original western PS2 release. There are some touch-ups here and there but it's largely the same and literally the only instance of "zoomerfied" dialogue is an Incubus in Yoyogi Park who's completely irrelevant to the rest of the game. If you think the QOL changes and convenience of a proper port are seriously worth throwing away just so you can avoid one single piece of missable npc dialogue you're a fricking idiot

Just play the HD version. The new translation is severely overblown and even edgier in some parts that cherrypickers never point out. RNG skills are a fricking nightmare that add nothing to the game, it was a bad phase for SMT that should be left in the past.

This was my first SMT game when I had no idea how to play it... so I just dumped every single levelup into physical so I could hit like a truck lol. Think I managed to get to The Moirae Sisters before it stopped working.

    >Buy game on release in 2004 (or whatever it was) because I saw an AD in a game magazine my GF got me for XMAS
    >Play it and it's kinda cool
    >Sell it because too much grinding

    >2019
    >Emu it to play it our of boredom
    >Use cheat engine to triple my EXP
    >Turns out to be an amazing game that's ton of fun

Bros, sometimes Japs get it and hand EXP out nicely so you can play the game, but sometimes they're so god damn awful they make the game a humongous chore and it ruins it. DDS (less so) 0and SMTIII(especially) are such games.

Based time saver. I actually like the easy exp and gold dlcs that atlus adds, literally don't use them if you don't want to. I have no issue with making the game easier on myself. Rather that than grind for 6 hours before girimehkala like in the original, which is literally just padding. The best rpgs don't require grinding but reward it if you do, and smt certainly isn't one of those

Are you running away from battles often or something? I only had to grind in Nocturne once, and it wasn't for very long. It was before Matador to get a better demon since you're pretty limited in the early game, and I only had to grind two or three levels. 90% of the time when you're stuck you can just go fuse better demons to get the job done, especially the later in the game you get. You can fuse Daisoujou really early and he'll basically carry you throughout the entire game

    >>MUH RNG IS BAD OK!!
    >The skill inheritance rules in the original version were literally there for balance of your party. If you think having demons with 8 broken skills is not casual shit then you are more of a underage homosexual than I previously thought.
Not him but you say that like we all didn't just keep resetting the fusion until we got the moves we wanted.

Literally impossible for you to roll a perfect demon set up without asinine levels of autism to set there and reset until perfection. Even getting 4/4 from an initial fusion would have taken a couple hours at best for a single demon. Then you have to fill in the rest with Mitamas which is not easy either because they lots of trash level 1-3 skills that have priorities over desirable level 9 skills like debilitate.

The rules always went to skill level first, and then elemental affinity secondary. Want to roll a Tarukaja/Debilitate/Charge/Pierce? Too bad, inherit a trash skill like Patra first. This kept the game balanced and prevented you from steam rolling everything. X0y488
