I'm pretty sure I use rotation in GTA, I guess because it's high speed and I like to know at a glance which direction I need to turn.
But I had it fixed in Friday the 13th, because knowing my direction and orientation was more important.
So I guess it depends on the game speed.

To even START using a compass, you align N with the needle. That is how you use a compass, it's that easy. You use compasses either simply to tell you where north is, or in conjunction with a map to navigate.

So the table also turns with the needle? That makes more sense. Still it's impossible to tell in WindWaker because it has no letters.

The minimap is for quick reference and usually aligned to a compass anyway, so let it rotate. I'll open the world/area map if I need a fixed mental image of the area.
Although I once played a game that didn't include an area map for some fucking reason, and I had to set the minimap to fixed just to get lost less. So it depends.

  32. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Depends on the game and the function of the map, if it's used as a short range radar or for granular navigation I find it more intuitive to have it rotating, if cardinal directions and clockface coordinates are important a fixed map is easier to read.

  33. 3 weeks ago

100% just depends. If it's a game with a lot of enemies, hidden loot and other landmarks AND they show up on the minimap, rotating. At that point it's just a radar.
If it's a game with a big map, complex navigation and landmarks, fixed. It helps with navigation when the map and minimap match up.

No, you do it because it's faster. I mean good on you for getting some mental exercise because the programmer couldn't be arsed with a rotation algorithm but what else?

          >No, you do it because it's faster.
It's not faster to physically rotate something than it is to mentally rotate it. You only think it's faster because it's mentally confusing for you. For most males it's not mentally confusing. It's like how if you're not a retard it's faster to mentally do arithmetic than it is to fish out a calculator and plug it all in manually but for idiots obviously the calculator is the faster method.

Again, you're not getting it. This is not some complex mental task for normal males that takes conscious effort. It's second nature. We do it as easily as breathing.

Why do you think mental rotation is some herculean task? Target acquisition is still faster if that approaching red dot that appeared on the right hand side of the radar is to your actual right rather than behind you because you were adamant on having your indicator rotate rather than the information.

I'm pretty sure I said it's the opposite of that. It's other people who are claiming it is that and that that's why physical rotation is better. I'm saying for the average male mental rotation is so fucking trivial to perform we don't even think about it and therefore we don't bother to rotate maps physically.

I also said it was second nature. We don't even think about it. It just instantly happens in our head. We don't mentally construct an image of the map and then slowly rotate it in our mind. It's already rotated in our minds. It's not a two step vs one step process. It's just one step.

It's fun to 180 instakill enemies that get revealed by the radar in CS because I can tell where I need to aim before I actually see them.

No. This is a terrible comparison. Bicycles are insanely more efficient than walking. A more apt comparison is you claiming skipping is better than jogging based purely on the fact you personally find skipping easier than jogging.

I already said not everyone is equally mentally equipped to do this. It's why I made the calculator comparison. Some people can just do that shit in their head. For others it's a real struggle and so they use calculators. For the subject we're talking about typically males are very good at it but females struggle a lot. If you're a male that can't easily do mental rotation then I'm sorry to say you're probably trans.

If you actually have a physical map:
You keep it oriented even when you don't look at it. It takes some spatial sense but the compass will do the rest.
If you spend your spatial sense there instead of whenever you stop to read the map you'll save time overall and have easier time judging distances at any moment.
