ya
It ultimately depends on the name, marketing, and launch games
Absolutely this.
Look how insanely well the Wii sold and compare it to how much the Wii U bombed.
All because the name and marketing on the Wii U was confusing as frick (and it didn't have any good launch games IIRC).
Generally this. Although I think what's more important I feel of these three are just the marketing and launch games, and even then more like "launch game" (Wii Sports to Wii, Super Mario to NES, Breath of the Wild to Switch). Then comes the marketing which, even if the console was called Wii U, I feel it could have still been a hit if it was done right. Nintendo Land (especially with Miiverse actually still being up) was a good experience even though it didn't resonate like Wii Sports did or Breath of the Wild did for the Switch as that MUST HAVE game for the Wii U, but it's a damn shame that the overall concept of the Wii U died because if the shit marketing. They could have called the Wii U anything they wanted and it still would have died with the trash marketing it had. Although technically you can say the name of the product counts toward the marketing of it, but I don't think that's what was meant here.
>Do you think Nintendo's next console will be as successful commercially as the Switch has been so far? Or maybe close?
Depends on what it is. If it's a home console I think it will not do so great, except for the Wii every home console has had disappointing sales since the SNES. They could strike gold with another gimmick but it's unlikely..
If it's another handheld/hybrid it will do great. Nintendo handhelds are always more successful then their home consoles. However I don't think it will pull Switch numbers.
I think a some casuals will be content with their Switch's and not upgrade. Many more will move to the ever growing UMPC market that offers handheld/tablet PC's. It's a market that improves in price, specs and accessibility each year, it won't overtake Nintendo in the handheld space but it will syphon sales.
Still with it's strong ecosystem, first party titles, low price, store availability and good 3rd party support it will probably pull in 60-90million sales.
If it's pretty much the most boring, unimaginative follow-up possible to the Switch, a Switch 2, it's still reaching upwards of 80 million sales easily.
The concept is gold and has been widely accepted. All Nintendo needs to do is nurture it and Not Frick It Up, which as we know is far from a guarantee
>If it's pretty much the most boring, unimaginative follow-up possible to the Switch,
If Iwata was still alive, I'd say there's less than no chance of that happening. With Furukawa though, there's a chance this could happen. Especially considering they STILL haven't done shit with the UI or brought any life or personality to the console or the experience, this may be the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" Nintendo era rather than the "we need to innovate/move the industry forward" Nintendo era.
I think part of what allowed Nintendo to take risks in the past was that they had two console lines going on at once. If the home console wasn't doing so hot the handheld line would pick up the slack.
But now that they've only got the Switch, they really HAVE to make it a success from the getgo.
Yes
But it will also 100% not be backward compatible (including digital), have some kind of weird gimmick, and be impossible to acquire for at least four years, at $600
t. from the future
>But it will also 100% not be backward compatible (including digital),
I think it will, Nintendo consoles have always been backwards compatible with the previous gen. Only reason the Switch wasn't is because Nintendo gimmicked themselves into a corner with the 3DS and Wii U gamepad.
Switch didn't do that. Notice how 99% of everything is playable on a Switch Lite with standard controls. Switch uses a basic 16:9 screen and except for shit like 1-2 Switch joycons are non-intrusive to the standard controller layout.
Even gamecard are the perfect size between compact but lot easily lost / broken. They don't want them to get any smaller and they can just keep upping the capacity for new consoles. I think backwards compatibility will go for several generations.
>Nintendo consoles have always been backwards compatible with the previous gen.
Huh?
Their handhelds have had a lot of backwards capabilities, but the consoles themselves haven't. I guess you could play Wii games on your WiiU but that's the only backwards compatibility the non-handhelds had.
Gamecube games on your Wii as well.
Neat. I legitimately didn't know that, I went from GCN to Switch and skipped both of the Wiis.
You could also play Gamecube games on your Wiis.
Whenever the format's allowed it Nintendo's gone for BC.
Admittedly though one of the big deals back then for the Wii (then Revolution) was that it was the first Nintendo home console to even try backwards compatibility. At least it was for me.
revolution was the code name for the gamecube. wasn't the wii the dolphin?
Other way around. Dolphin was gamecube, Revolution was Wii.
god damn i was positive the gamecube was the revolution. this is like berenstein bears level to me. i was that certain i remembered people referring to the gamecube prototype as the revolution in magazines.
>Dolphin was gamecube, Revolution was Wii.
The deck is both
Close. Dolphin was GameCube and Revolution was Wii. It's probably easy to mix up today since everyone thinks of the dolphin emulator which plays both Wii and GameCube games...like the Wii which played Wii and GameCube games. I also remember Iwata's broken English getting me hyped up when he was saying "Now you say, YOU want a Re-revolution...WELL....WE'VE GOT ON" and pulls what would end up being the Wii out of his jacket. Haven't felt that excited about a console in many years.
You can theoretically run GCN games in WiiU, but they software-lock it. WiiU is basically 4 GCN merged into one console.
I certainly dont envy their R&D department, they have to follow up with something clearly distinct from the switch or they will repeat the wii-wii u frickup where parents werent buying the new thing because they thought it was a periphereal..
If they make it actually capable of fitting into a non-lardass's pocket, 1080p in handheld, and backwards compatible, they'll have the next 7 years by the throat.
Of course they won't do this and have a Wii U situation all over again.
>If they make it actually capable of fitting into a non-lardass's pocket
They won't have even 1 day's worth of fresh third party support if they try anything larger than a Switch Lite. They need something at least as powerful as a PS4 Pro for 9th gen.
Not really but it won't flop or anything moronic like that. The Switch is basically the Wii of the 2020s. It has such a massive install base that whatever new console they release is bound to have its games held back by the Switch for several years to come. It'll be exactly like what's happening with the PS5 right now but I doubt the Switch will suffer as much in sales in Japan for example. It's guaranteed to be a 2023 release at this point, will likely use Orin-based chip and effectively just be a Switch hardware upgrade with a new gimmick. Getting rid of the portable or tv modes respectively would be the biggest mistake they could make as Portable and Portable/TV split make up the mass majority of the Switch userbase and also the contributed the most to its success and justification for the $300 price. Also Steam Deck won't cut into its profits but Deck 2 will leapfrog it in specs and price. I won't be getting a Switch 2 because of this.
is there any Original Xbox, Xbox 360 or ps vita emulator for android?
I want an emulator for one of those 2 consoles, so I don't play on shitty Nintendo emulators
Seems like Nintendo has a Hit/Miss cycle going on.
N64 - HIT
GameCube - Miss
Wii - HIT
WiiU - Miss
Switch - HIT
But NES and SNES were hits. N6t4 did poorly in Japan.
people seem to forget the only territory that the 64 sold very well in was North America. The 64 ended up only selling three million less than the SNES there.
>Seems like Nintendo has a Hit/Miss cycle going on.
This is only with their home consoles.
Handhelds
>gameboy
hit
>gameboy color
hit
>gameboy advance
hit
>ds
hit
>3ds
hit
>switch
hit
Unsurprising because their handhelds have Pokemon.
>N64
>Hit
Given that it sold at least 3x the Saturn which had a few years head start, yeah, that was a hit.
There's a 99% chance their next hardware is switch-equivalent. They're never doing a dedicated console or dedicated handheld ever again, guaranteed. The industry is too different now
Hell, 20 years from now I'll be genuinely surprised if not every thing stream/cloud based, meaning any sort of terminal/hardware will play any game
>Hell, 20 years from now I'll be genuinely surprised if not every thing stream/cloud based, meaning any sort of terminal/hardware will play any game
I see Microsoft/Xbox doing the most to push this and end up being a frontrunner in the "streaming wars" with Steam, Epic, and probably Luna if Amazon doesnt drop it soon. Even still, I think they'll still make an Xbox just to have hardware. I don't see Nintendo going full cloud based even if it was the only option they had left to survive as a company.
Imagine if you can stream Xbox games on your Super Nintendo Switch.
I will wait for the emulator
Not while the supply shortage is still a thing. PS5 is a dismal failure and that has a lot to do with the lack of availability to even get one at MSRP. I wouldn't expect a follow up for at least 2 more years.
You would expect sales to fall because of no covid boost, however there is a separate effect that can make up for it. Their growth in China has been pretty explosive. By next gen they can probably sell 30+ million there. So I think they can get close at least.
Nintendo is benefitting from the rest of the industry shitting their pants. They're the only ones still making good single player games. The only company not obsessed with microtransactions. They'll succeed because they have no competition.
I hope Nintendo comes out with 64 gig or 128 gig game cards with a faster card reader that's backwards compatible with Switch cards. Also I hope the next system goes with a 512 gigabyte internal SSD if it has low enough power. The screen can be the same 720p OLED for handheld, but docked needs DLSS upscaling. Joycons will have to be upgraded into a better controller. Though old Joycons can work via Bluetooth synching they will not be useable in handheld mode. Also while I see compatibility with the OLED dock I don't see compatibility with the original Switch dock.
>I hope Nintendo comes out with 64 gig or 128 gig game cards with a faster card reader that's backwards compatible with Switch cards.
The switch already had 32gb back in 2017 so 64gb by 2022 is a nobrainer, I'd guess 128gb will be available. But like 32gb on the switch, most games wont use 128gb due to cost. Most switch 2 games will probably use 32gb to save money, with higher budget games using 64gb.
I meant to say by 2023 here, not 2022
It also depends on what third parties want as well. On one hand having game cards with 64 gigs means $70 games but also higher cost to publish physical. On the other hand many AAA physical games on Switch require a download for the games to be useable (we're talking 30+ gigs of extra storage). Third parties would rather go $70 for all digital games.
I do expect the next Switch to have an upgraded microSD card reader like what new video camera recorders have.
Not my problem. What I want to know is how gimmicky they'll make it versus a simple upgrade.
It wont be gimmicky. Furukawa has shown no interest in gimmicks whatsoever. All of that was done under Iwata. The last gimmicky thing Nintendo did was Ring fit around 3 years ago, and because of dev times Furukawa likely had nothing to do with that.
You are only suppose to add weird gimmicks when your sales are down, that's why the Wii was a success and the WiiU a failure. You don't go crazy with the gimmicks until sales start dipping below 50 million.
>You are only suppose to add weird gimmicks when your sales are down, that's why the Wii was a success and the WiiU a failure. You don't go crazy with the gimmicks until sales start dipping below 50 million.
Nintendo consistently had gimmicks the entire time Iwata ran the company and then stops having them a few years after he dies. You cant claim it's just a coincidence, Iwata loved gimmicks.
Considering this is Furukawa's Nintendo now instead of Iwata's, I don't think this is a guarantee anymore.
Every other Nintendo console seems to be a flop since the GameCube, so probably not. I’ll get it tho if it has switch backwards compatibility.
How can it possibly fail if it launches with the next 3D Mario and Mario Kart?
The Wii U was only able to fail because they launched it with fricking nothing and when Mario 3D World finally came out it was trash.
Its launching with BotW2
I doubt it, personally. It wouldn't be an ideal launch game. The Wii U and switch are very similar in power so a Wii U game could still highlight what the system could do and get people excited about the hardware. The Switch 2 is gonna be vastly stronger than the switch (we know from the Nvidia hack), so a switch game running at a higher resolution would look like raw ass compared to other games on the console. I think they'll just make a 4k patch for BotW 2 on the next console, or do a 4k remaster collection with both BotW and BotW 2.
>Nvidia hack
Pleased stop using that as proof. First, nobody knows when that info was changed or updated before the hack happened and second, the info within it is a little too out there to work within a 10-15 watt power limit.
>the info within it is a little too out there to work within a 10-15 watt power limit.
It doesn't have to work within 10-15 watts. The Switch can connect to a wall to draw more power. They can totally do 20-25 watts docked.
From what i remember from a digital foundry video that compared the V1 to the V2. The original V1 switch doesn't even go higher than 12 watts. So going higher than 15 watts docked would mean the dock itself has to do more than just be a connection.
A new console would have a new dock.
Could be an opportunity to have BotW2 launch for the Switch but have the new system's enhancement mode via download run BotW2 with DLSS. Otherwise we're looking at two versions of the same game but one's for $60 that can run on both systems while the other is $70 that can only run on the new system.
I would like to see a redesign of the dock to make the next gen system more console-mode friendly. The USB slots on the side of the console suck. And its a pain in the ass to get into the back to unplug the charging brick. At least on the old dock. Also Switch never updated to use the USB-3 hub on the back of the old dock. And the OLED dock just replaces it with an ethernet port.
I want to see the dock redesigned to have four front-facing USB-3 ports. Also I want to have an easily accessible ethernet port and power-slot. Now as much as I'd love for the dock to be upgraded to have hardware to DLSS all Switch footage. But I think that'll add latency to the video.
i think they'll make it a straight upgrade and it will do well, the switch is a winning concept and is more efficient for nintendo's stable of studios since they can consolidate on working on one platform instead of two of vastly different capabilities
Open world Zelda will end up selling around 35 million
What would open world Mario sell? (yes I know about Bowser's Fury but it's a tech demo attached to a different game).
As long as it's just the Switch but slightly more powerful and has games, yes.
Probably about a 5% chance Nintendo goes full moron on some other gimmick no one wants but that's way down from normal considering this is now basically all that stands between them and failure.
>Probably about a 5% chance Nintendo goes full moron on some other gimmick no one wants but that's way down from normal considering this is now basically all that stands between them and failure.
Even further down because they're now run by a businessman instead of a random programmer.
Iwata only ran the company for like 15 years anon.
Shit like Virtual Boy didn't come from him. Gimmicks are just what Nintendo does.
I'm not saying they never did any gimmicks before Iwata, but Iwata Nintendo did them much much more often and on a greater scale.
Virtual Boy was Yokoi's project. Despite the red and black meme it had stereoscopic 3D and two d-pads on the controller. The 3D would be used for the 3DS and the d-pad idea sort of became dual analog sticks with the Playstation Dualshock.
Cute Zelda.
Nintendo's not making another console lmao
A GPU for a new Nintendo console leaked from Nvidia's hack. Nvidia several months ago put up hiring ads for creating dev tools for a next gen video game console.
ok let me know when that rumored switch pro is announced
Why would you need to hire people to make new dev tools for a pro? Why would you make a pro 6+ years into a console's life? It's a successor, probably launching somewhere between late 2023 and early 2024.
only if it has the same/similar form factor, runs all switch software, has modest improvements in performance/resolution/control sticks, battery, game library and some new features
While I'll never underestimate Nintendo's ability to go full moron I believe they'll stick with the Switch form factor for a while and just update internals like other manufacturers do. I mean what other gimmick can they come up with when this device is the perfect Nintendo machine?
The only thing they can really still do is VR, but I imagine that would be optional because otherwise the console would cost 700 dollars.
There's stereoscopic VR like with the Labo VR kit. You'll have to make a headset to put the console in it.
Too heavy and too low resolution even if you move to 1080p.
I have an idea for stereoscopic 3D with DLSS, but that requires the full dock hardware and a power supply.
They'll probably hit 60-80% depending on parts shortages.
From a tech stand point, their logical step is to make the dock like an external GPU. Problem is that kind of tech requires Thunderbolt to be hot-swappable, which AFAIK isn't possible unless there's a workaround.
